Someone explain to my dumbbrains how this is more cost effective than hiring people to do this. I mean, there's the investment in the tech to do this, the warehouse design to accommodate these lil' bots, and in the end each lil' bot is distributing one package each, whereas a person with a hand truck could or a laundry bin could seemingly do the same thing.

Probably error rate. Packing errors are a massive pain point in logistics. Also this massively parallelises the tasks. So imagine the person putting the parcels on the robot it actually delivering them by hand. The order the parcels are coming in is unknown so she'd have to just go round and round the warehouse finding the right place to drop the parcel off, lots of doubling back and lots of potential for error. With the robots the parcel that has to go to the far corner of this warehouse does not stop any other parcel being delivered.

The robots don't sleep, don't eat, don't need bathroom breaks or sick days. They draw no wages, require no healthcare, and they can't sue you. Robots don't need to match or exceed the efficiency of human workers to be cost-effective, because they have far fewer built-in opportunity costs. Maybe those specific robots don't, but Amazon and a lot of other companies are willing to invest in developing the tech because they know that robots are the future of labor and because they know how valuable it is to control the means of production. Seriously, each of those bots probably costs like, $50? That's like half a day's wages at a distribution centre somewhere with even a lovely minimum wage.

Doesn’t matter, though. It’s a one time cost, and as long as the maintenance cost per hour worked is less than that of a human, the robot wins eventually.
