Does anyone else's antivirus really hate Starsector downloads? I swear first Chrome takes like twenty minutes to scan it and finish the download, then Windows Defender takes twenty minutes to actually let the computer open the install file.

Now that we can build colonies and the Industry part of the game seems to be fleshed out... I wonder, what's missing? Is there any other 'big feature' to do to reach 1.0?
Something related to endgame? Flesh out the faction wars? Is he going to add some kind of main storyline quest?
Something related to the remnants of past technology, like some super AI hidden, building up itself and taking the sector by storm in the late game?
Or Is the game mostly done, and he is going to just balance, polish, add small features everywhere, and improve the tutorial part?

That's what I'm hoping, though more a series of factional and sidequests a la EV:Nova.

The game does track relationships with individual fleet captains atm but does almost nothing with it, that could be an area for rework/expansion

I wouldn't be surprised if something similar to Nexerelin is one day integrated into the game. Not sure what would be done for a true main story though, unless it's like M&Bs ability to sort-of influence factional leadership and mess with allegiances.

I'd love to see:
-More diplomacy/politics between factions and player factions, mechanics that allow war and conquest on a real "map painting" level.
-Bit more depth for player built settlements to grow from a faction base to more of an actual civilization/society. Pick a government style, pick some SMAC style "social engineering" policies.
-Big threats and challenges that need faction-level resources to tackle or defend against.
-Cool emergent storytelling based on events and natural faction interactions and how the player has influenced the setting, rather than some fairly linear bethesda-style "main story quest"

I'm going to keep the alpha core and the nanoforge and try to settle that planet I found, its very close to settled space.

To fund it, I will instead sell these surveys and the plans for a Doomclass phase cruiser to pirates on the black market. This cannot backfire.

Edit: Its a pretty crap planet, but the extensive ruins still brings it up to a class V survey. It also has a decivilized society so I'm curious to see how that will turn out.

It's always been a bit weird. Go to the fleet screen and hit the toggles at the top to choose which market and switch it to 'buy' instead of sell.

Oh you figured it out. Yeah it's nested weirdly either way.

Laurie's World never got to experience fully automated gay luxury space communism :(

It was surprisingly easy to set the colony up though and it's totally worthwhile to do it as soon as you can afford to do some tech mining. It costs about 60k to set up a spaceport and a tech mine plus assorted supplies you need early (food, supplies, domestic goods). Trade will then start to flow to your colony.

Man, I forgot about how hard the hobo-phase is, but the alternative is starting with a whole advanced cruiser and that's just too fancy for me.

A question though, I'm looking to buy some new ships and a lot of them have D mods, but no explanation for what the mod does until I actually buy it and am able to mouse-over the description. Even if I click on the "?" to get detailed info on the ship, I can see it has a mod like "defective manufacturer" but no tool-tip on what exactly that does.

Starsector keeps backup saves in the save folder. Depending on when you saved/if you deleted it you might still have it.

Turn on easy mode. No, really, there's no shame here.

Trade is a trap - sell what you pick up from blowing dudes up, but don't try to get ahead by buying and selling stuff.

Get into the habit of toggling your transponder when you jump into and out of hyperspace. Despite what the fluff says the instant you hit hyperspace no one cares if you're running transponder off, and the additional stealth is worthwhile especially in early game. Turn it on if you're going to vulture a fight, sure, but otherwise hyperspace -> transponder off, normal space -> transponder on(*). Otherwise you can be tracked from forever away by giant pirate fleets that are probably as fast as you are.

Bounties are pretty good money and scale with your fleet. Check out your intel tab. Surveying is also okay money, but there be beasties out in the black so steer clear of warning beacons that flash several times unless you think you're 'ard enough.

Don't be too hasty on getting the bigger ships. Destroyers are a fine, sustainable upgrade early game, but stop there until you've got plenty in the bank. In other games you want to pick bigger ships up as fast as possible because they increase your money making potential beyond what they cost. In Starsector cruisers are barely break-even if you're amazing and in the middle of a war with plenty of loot to get, and capital ships are just enormous black holes you throw supplies, money, and fuel into(+). They're survivable and put out amazing amounts of hurt, but they're absolutely dedicated warships that sacrifice maintenance costs for pure power and you don't want to have one out unless you're in the middle of a knock-down drag-out shooting war sort of situation.

Carriers are shockingly powerful and this recent patch only buffed them. Snag 'em when you can.

Despite what you might think from other games where higher technology is better, low tech is actually the home of some of the best ships in the game which also tend to be low maintenance. The Lasher and Enforcer are both ships that most fleets can never get enough of - they hit hard, survive well, and are pretty cheap to maintain. Ballistic weapons, despite not looking sexy, have the best distribution of specialist damage types in the game. Energy weapons may be better jacks of all trades, but they suffer in flux use and applying damage.

Pick up a ship salvage skill or three, and at that point ships are easy come, easy go. You'll lose a few in a decent fight, but you'll gain a few ships too. Sure, they're (D) ships and somewhat crippled, but that makes them cheap as gently caress to maintain and deploy - you can always hoarde the good ships for yourself and high leveled captains.

Combat skills are usually quite situational. Pick fleet/industry skills up first. Decide what you want in your warship and pick up the combat ones when you've got it handy. If you don't think the game natively hands out enough skill points (I don't), the Console Commands mod has your back.

You can't micromanage ships in the command tab, but you'd be amazed how much of a difference a few escort commands make. Group your ships up with each other by weight class - having frigates escorting frigates, destroyers with destroyers, carriers escorting heavier ships, etc. Don't make the groups bigger than five or so, and not smaller than three if possible. It helps with general survivability. Make sure all ships are grouped this way - if you issue an escort order and there are ungrouped ships (like if you brought in reinforcements after one of your groups got mulched) the game will have the new ships take up escort position. This is a problem if you're in a big, slow capital ship slugging it out with the main enemy line and your newly reinforcing frigates are being told to escort you. Good if you want to downsize the fleet, less if you want to have light ships around.

(*) Exceptions apply if you're stealthing into a system for some reason.

(+) Exceptions apply if you're running a fleet of pure cargo capital ships (Atlases) and you've spreadsheet warriored to the point where you can make a profit despite 30% tariffs on each end. Obviously this is not you.
