Copying this post from the DnD thread for foreigners who don't read that but might be interested why labour are voting against the deal

MikeCrotch posted:

Novara Media made a good point that while there is ambiguity over just how much the EU's state aid rules would impair a socialist Labour government, the deal as drafted would totally gently caress a socialist government because the EU gets to decide whether something is state aid or not while the UK would have no recourse to challenge that. Remember that the wording basically hands power of deciding what is and isn't state aid into the hands of the commission, who are completely unaccountable;

"The European Commission defines state aid as:

An advantage in any form whatsoever conferred on a selective basis to undertakings by national public authorities.

A measure constitutes state aid if it:

involves the transfer of state resources;

has potential distortive effects on competition and trade in the EU market; and

confers a selective economic advantage to the recipients.

Such measures can take a variety of forms, including grants, subsidies, loans, guarantees, and tax credits. However, not all state aid is unlawful. If the aid contributes positively to the EU economy without having an undue negative impact on competition, then under certain conditions, the aid would be lawful. The European Commission defines this as ‘compatible aid’, which can have important economic benefits, leading to increased employment and output."

There's a Minister in my bedroom and I don't know what to do.

He keeps waving a new passport and screaming, "Look, it's blue,"

Today he learned on Question Time, where he sat on the panel,

The shocking news that lots of trade went through the English Channel,

There's a Minister in my bedroom and I don't want him to stay,

His howls and terrifying and he scares my guests away.

Oh Minister in my bedroom, just before you go,

Why were you in my bedroom?

I really want to know.

There's a new boy in my seat and I don't know what to do,

I can hear the sound of laughter ripple round the drat EU,

The chickens have come home to roost, I don't know what to do,

The Remoaners are all saying that we didn't think it through,

Our policy - a shambles, our negotiating - poo!

And now everybody knows, what we already knew...

Oh Minister in my bedroom now I know what to do,

There's a double-decker parked outside, it leaves at half past two,

It's destined for The Good Ol' Days, now would I lie to you?

(If it's written on a bus then you know it must be true!)

Oh Minister in my bedroom now I know what to do,

Take this present I've been saving, just for poor old you.

I throw him a banana and watch as he inspects it.

"Now please lubricate your backstop and shove that up your Brexit."

I agree.

but I don’t know at this point if rejecting this deal is more likely to mean a no deal Brexit, or no Brexit. nobody does. it’s a gamble and placing your bet based on what the temporary transition deal would mean - when the actual trade deal has yet to be started - is stupid whether coming from the left or the right.

Pretty sure the EU would only extend art 50 for a 2nd referendum, don't think they've any patience for restarting negotiations every time the government falls.

It is incidentally a completely bullshit argument because even after the transitional arrangement, it's not like the EC is going to give up defining what is considered state aid, and any British government that cheerfully broke those rules as a big "gently caress you we've left now" to the EU would find that its goods would get tariffed hard.

And then what are they going to do about it, go to the (consultative only) WTO which already has a years-long waiting time when multiple members have already come out and said would screw with any British application?

It was a referendum on whether people were broadly happy with life or not, which the people running the "we can slightly change it to make it better if you want, but it's good now." campaign misjudged terribly at every step including calling it "remain" instead of "stay" which gave it a middle class signifying fruitiness to it.

Any wider ideological implications were not really featured even if they deserved to be, since the leave campaign was basically just a putsch by the extreme right shouting "the Turks are going to rape your wife and steal all your money! They're there! THEY'RE COMING DOWN THE CHUNNEL! QUICK! STOP THEM!!!" while Novara Media types speciously invoked the opinions of Tony Benn or Bob Crow mostly to themselves.

Corbyn did talk about the Tory's "bonfire of rights" if brexit went through but the media barely covered what he did, preferring to present the referendum as Cameron vs Boris with a side order of Farage

It's not the Council that decides what is and isn't state aid, it is the European Commission, and they have absolutely no reason to give up that power to a bunch of reprobates people wanted to see the back of.

are you talking about enforced austerity on eurozone countries due to the lack of individual currencies allowing the import focused countries of the european south because that's not about state aid rules and about the inability of those countries to devalue their own currency to fund it without impacting german export value because they're all using the same currency

or are you talking about the internal governing of a right wing party in government in germany doing things to consolidate power for the elite because that's literally just a right wing government doing what it wants to do
