I watched the new Fantastic Beasts movie and apparently Wizard Hitler's goal is to stop Real Hitler. They didn't outright say Dumbledore is gay, but the non-sexual stuff they show him doing with Grindelwald sure is gay. Also he's the best-dessed guy in the movie.

The main character is "based" on the author (who really was a special ops guy in Vietnam - and later got sent to jail on fraud charges because "the man didn't like what I had to say"), but regularly has him doing poo poo like fist fighting Al-Qaeda on top of the Vatican. I met Dick Marcinko for a few seconds at a GameStop conference in like 2009 or 10 because the very very very long delayed and completely awful Rogue Warrior video game was finally coming out. It was supposed to launch with the 360 but I guess for quality/book timing/whatever reasons it kept getting pushed back and bouncing from dev to dev. Anyway I got an autographed free copy of one of his books which I threw away the same day and he kept greeting everyone by going up to anyone coming by the table shaking one's hand while handing them a book, and boldly stating HEY KID......I'M THE ROOOGUE WARRRIOR™. I want to say it was 2009 because I remember that it was within the time period where SquareEnix bought Eidos and WBIE became a thing but before Arkham city came out so I had to go to like five different publisher presentations where each one was acting like they, personally, coded and created every aspect of Batman: Arkham Asylum. I honestly love the Val Kilmer film. Everyone's engaging in it, it gave the world Rade Serbedzija, the villains were prescient and now frighteningly familiar and the soundtrack is pure '90s EDM. I swear to God that, when I die, I want Superior's "Polaroid Millennium" to be the last thing I hear. Instead of smashing my wristwatch across the rocks to tell everyone when I died, it will be a MP3 player timed so the last lines are "these four walls are lost forever/I could never be that clever". That's such a great outro song.

One of the weirder old hollywood things is in the original Saint series, the main actor George Sanders left to do the series The Falcon which was functionally identical to The Saint (to the point where they got sued), then he left that series but instead of recasting The Falcon they invented his brother and killed him off, the brother was played by Sanders's actual brother.

Maybe this could be the start of ITC Action-Adventure Show Reboot Shared Extended Cinematic Movie Universe. Your post-credits scene is Chris Pratt as Simon Templar going back to his house and being confronted by a man in a bowler with a brolly played by Tom Hiddleston saying he's here to talk to him about the Avengers Initiative.

I think it's important to note that with the Dumbledore thing, the book series ended in 2007 after a decade-long run. Being able to include gay characters in kids media without coding it or attracting absolutely insane amounts of controversy is a pretty new development. The way Dumbledore is actually handled in the books is way less consistent with how you characterize it, and more consistent with Rowling probably not thinking she'd be allowed to say it outright without getting a lynch mob of fundies after her- it's pretty blindingly obvious if you're looking at all.

If you are wondering about the big spoiler for Crimes of Grindelwald, it's about Ezra Miller's character Credence. Grindelwald told him that his real name is Aurelius Dumbledore. JK Rowling never even hinted at the character existing before this.

CharlestheHammer posted:Yeah trying to sell fundies on witchcraft was already a non starter, gay people ain’t gonna do poo poo I've lived in the absolute heart of fundie-land for all my life. As it stands, Harry Potter was only a big deal in that regard at the very outset, and as the series went on and became more widely known, everyone along those lines who wasn't a complete nut kinda went "okay, this is very clearly not teaching my children how to be wizards IRL with Satan's help, I'm grudgingly ok with this." Like, I remember watching the Prisoner of Azkaban movie with my ultra-ultra-fundie grandma when it came out on DVD (at HER suggestion), who was completely okay with it because it bore absolutely no resemblance to what most fundies understand "witchcraft" to be. (If Chilling Adventures of Sabrina had come out before she passed away, she probably would have utterly lost it with anger at that show's existence.) Making Dumbledore explicitly gay, instead of just very very heavily coded as such, would have nuked that grudging acceptance from orbit.

I haven’t seen the latest movie but her Comoran Strike series (which she tried to write under a pseudonym) is a delightful crime airport thriller. Rowling clearly loves the characters. There are a few points where her politics and frustrations bleed through (a big part of The Silkworm is Rowling dunking on the publishing industry and “serious literary authors”) but they never make the books unreadable. A Casual Vacancy is all about local British politics and it is an absolutely atrocious book.

Yeah depending on where you live and how old you are, it can be really shocking for a lot of folks to find out that in 2004 GWB ran a successful re-election campaign in the US with about 1\3rd to half of the messaging focusing on more or less open homophobia. Being anti-gay was a winning issue with over half the US population, less than 15 years ago. The social change we've seen since then had been massive and extremely fast. Rowling is still pretty awful of course.
