What? It seemed like
a good idea at the time.

Ellie, Chloe, Feene.

Are we sure Narika's route isn't over? That seemed like a pretty little knot to put on a finished story, even as out-of-character as she was acting there. :p

Not even close. The positive is that the jerk NPC part is over with since Sasami pulled a face turn. Too bad we've picked up like three new jerk NPCs.

You know in your heart what the answer is. Besides, we just watched Chloe protect the kid that took pictures of her changing, you really think she would take the opportunity even if it was presented to her? Granted, Narika pulled a weird personality turn so I guess anything is possible.

Ellie, Narika, and Feene. I still want to see what's up with Ellie's whole Church assassin thing, and Narika's sudden personality shift is concerning. I've mostly lost interest in Chloe's generic idol crap, and I'd like to see how Feene's route progresses.

I'm leaving Heroine voting open for another day or two, but I will close voting for Feene's outfit. I wanted to take her along in a dungeon, so I needed a costume choice.

I've got the recording for the next update done and I'll be starting on it tomorrow. It's a story update, so the heroine voting won't really impact it in any way. I also just realized that I missed a reoccurring music track somehow, so I'll be including that in the update as well. Not sure how I missed it considering it plays all the time in the Dorm.

~Update 11: Vacation, need a little sun; to break up all the frustration and turn it into love~

Round 2 voting has ended and we now have a small shake up in our focus heroines going forward.

1.

Feene was the dominant choice by a wide margin. I'm not overly surprised, but it is a little odd to see her rank so high above the others. I guess the thread wanted to include a route that seems like it might be a little more down to earth. No miracle concerts for little sick kids, or Church assassinations, or Grand Strategy Conferences. Just good old fashioned photography (so far), and maybe a little 'girls love' on the side. Nothing wrong with that.

Feene will be accompanying Wake into the story dungeon during this update. Given how popular she is (and how late she joins the cast), I felt it would be a little unfair to go in reverse order like I did last time. That would result in Feene not seeing action until the end of Chapter 6.

2.

The newly smug and jerky Narika maintained her spot in the rankings. Her sudden personality swing is either concerning people or making her a more attractive character, depending on how you feel about her. Is success going to her head? Or is she just a loving master of deception that lulled Sasami into a false sense of security before pulling the rug out from under her at a clutch moment?

Narika will be going with Wake into the Chapter 5 story dungeon.

3.

Pop Star Chloe slipped from #1, but still managed to edge out 'Assassin's Creed: Ellie' and retain a spot. The thread seems to have a fondness for the currently suspended homeroom teacher, so we'll continue following the suddenly rocky idol career of Ms. Chloe.

Chloe will be going along with Wake into the Chapter 6 story dungeon.

So there are your (kind of) new Focus Heroines. The biggest surprise of this vote in my mind was Ellie. Apparently she lost a little bit of her luster once we finally found out what she was up to in her Church work. Alternatively, Feene siphoned off Ellie's votes to fuel her rise to #1. Alternatively alternatively, people just really hate Lucian and want no part of his crap.

Could be a little bit of all three, as well. Who knows. Other than that, Torri and Fuuko both picked up some decent support, while Serina's pool of supporters evaporated due to user BlazeEmblem discovering her horrible secret (she actually uses a gun weapon, just like every heroine). She was left with a single troll vote.

So guess what? That means Serina will be joining Wake for a little romp through a Sub-Labyrinth! She's going to aim for the coveted 'LP Ending' spot and try to win people over with her dungeon performance and route summary. She did manage to claw her way up to S Rank after all, so anything is possible.

As mentioned before, I will be going over every route at the end of the LP. In a highlight summary anyway. You'll get to find out what happens to everyone one way or another.

I have also remembered that I have missed some of the music tracks that play around Fort City. The dungeon music is largely forgettable (other than the main battle theme), but these ambient city tracks are pretty nice.

Routine in 366 Days - Plays a lot during some of the generic Sub-Events
Harvest Code - Plays in the Dorm Room a lot
Shop Show - Plays in the Shop

There's an extended version of the title screen music as well, but I can't post it yet since it spoils literally every ending CG. I'll post it when the LP wraps up because it's actually a really pleasant tune.

Before we get rolling, I have a few small highlights from Wake and Serina's jog through W.Wind Tunnel.

Couple of things about this screenshot. First of all, hidden traps are getting annoying common now. It's entirely possible to hit one, walk three steps, and run straight into another one. You can easily go through a dungeon losing more health to traps than the enemies. It happened to me on my second journey in here.

Why the second journey? That is answered by a certain quest enemy.

Namely, it's a group of big scary tough EXP pinata enemies. They appear here when you accept the quest "Serious Sagitta". BE CAREFUL WITH "SERIOUS" [ENEMY] QUESTS. Why am I giving you a warning for a game that has been a cakewalk so far?

That's why. Do not gently caress with the Serious Quest enemies at this early stage of the game. They are powerful little bastards that can first turn kill your entire team.

Now, you could probably take them if you abuse the DLC EXP quest, but for the most part you'll want to avoid them for now. If you cannot take them on, then it's a good idea to cancel the quest before continuing in this dungeon. Otherwise these guys will prove to be dangerous obstacles as you explore.

Scary little buggers. Anyway, the rest of Wind Tunnel is comprised of enemies you've seen before. There might be some color variants kicking around, like this Ursulaam here, but none of them are really worth pointing out.

Honestly, there isn't much I can tell you guys about the recolor enemies. They just have slightly higher stats and maybe a higher tiered spell. The same strategies apply, which is to say you kill them in a few regular attacks, or you use your attack skills to kill them in one attack. Then you move on with your life.

Narika also sends us a message.

I'm sure you're fighting in the Labyrinth right now. You might think I'm a little strange to be thinking this... Especially while you're fighting so bravely... But I feel like I've become more confident since meeting you. I'm not exactly sure why, but whenever I talk to you... I feel as though I can go a little further than I normally do. Um, that's all I really wanted to say in this message. Please don't do anything that could put you at risk while you're in there. If you're ever hurt, I'll make sure to heal you. Please let me know. I'll be waiting for you to come back home safe. Sincerely, Narika.

I think you've gone plenty far enough Narika. Either way, it's nice of you to be supportive and concerned for Wake's well being, as opposed to going out and partying with friends like Fuuko.

Speaking of Fuuko, she wanted to redeem herself for that message.

To Wake: I'm sure you're in the Labyrinth with another girl right now... I bet she's much more competent than I am. I'll have to try harder. I know I'm not the greatest... But I will always strive to do the best I can to help you. I'm serious. It makes me feel bad if you're going to be the one protecting me all the time. I was given this holy power for a reason. I have to use it to bring the world peace. I'll be praying for your safe return. P.S. Take care of all the cute Star Children, too.

Fuuko, I like the determination, but the place it's coming from needs correcting. Gotta work on that self-esteem, girl. Not like you don't have sources to draw from when it comes to that. You're only an incredibly good looking S-Ranked Elite student that fights through hell using Warrior Spirit Children bestowed by God.

I mean, just look! Felicia thinks the world of you! Adorable. And don't just think she's flattering you because she's your Star Child. These kids are not afraid to speak their minds. Case in point:

That's cold, Aria.

That's all there is for W.Wind Tunnel. The 'boss' for this Sub-Labyrinth is just a group of color swapped varients of the blue ghost dudes from our first Sub-Labyrinth.

With that out of the way, I also take Torri into the other Sub-Labyrinth just to finish it off. I already explored it while showing off the EXP Sagitta, so the only thing left is to pop in and beat the boss.

The boss of this Sub-Labyrinth was just one of those golden skeletal ghosts accompanied by two of the blue variety. Boring.

Clearing the Sub-Labyrinths is a good idea though. One of the Star Children requires you to clear a certain number of them in order to unlock the class.

That will be for another Chapter though. Sloth has no Sub-Labyrinths.

Feene was incredibly popular in the vote, and it just so happens that this Labyrinth is basically built for her. Enemies are a mix of all four elements, which Dusk is super effective against.

At least she'll get to start strong. Let's hit it!

SGE Wave Change!

Wake, On The Air!

Iron-Blood Transformation!

-Sloth Labyrinth-

Wake, could I bother you for a moment?

Sure, what's up?

She's formed a team of Disciples to help test Neo Ether in the Dusk Circles.

*sigh* Of course she did. Let me guess, Chlotz and Alec?

Nah, it's not me.

Wait, if it's not you guys then who the hell is it? She didn't just grab some random Elites, did she?

They're special Disciples that don't normally attend the Academy.

She was super-excited to be able to go into a new Circle. She's like curiosity personified. And unfortunately, I'm left housesitting.

Sure, that's great. What does this have to do with our mission?

We've just confirmed that we can use Neo Ether to communicate with her. If the Chief runs into any trouble, we'll contact you. We'll let you know immediately if that happens. We'll be counting on you.

I'd prefer it if you didn't. If you think I'm going to drop everything and run to her rescue like I did with you, then you are sorely mistaken. Wake, out.

Such a pain in my rear end. Every last one of them.

Oh well, at least she has some kind of protection with her. Unlike Mark. C'mon kids! Let's get this done before Ruby screws something up!

I see Ruby is totally pumped to dive into a Circle as long as she has some kind of muscle protecting her. God forbid she be put in any kind of real danger. Mark and his team though? Whatever.

Hell yeah, Feene. Break the walls down. Let's do this.

Sloth doesn't have much in the way of surprises early on. Just more of these giant armored rhino guys.

And wind versions of these guys. Creepy.

Some nice new equipment can be picked up as well. I don't mind taking a loss of 15 speed for a boost of 50 attack plus the passive chance to instant kill, even if said chance is probably incredibly low.

Torri also chimes in. The other heroines are getting awfully chatty lately.

I'm sending you this because I thought it would be a good change of pace for you. I'm making items right now in Magecraft Club to take in the Labyrinth. I was supposed to make a golem that chases after monsters... But what I actually made is only chasing me around instead. It's a pesky golem that keeps trying to spank me on my bottom. That's why I'm a little bit sad. But telling you this has made me feel better. I'm going to keep making golems. I'll keep trying harder and harder so I can be more useful to you. I hope you don't get sad in the Labyrinth. I hope you keep trying your best. I'll be cheering for you. Bye bye. - Torri

Well, at least she isn't starving or talking about how she's blown all her money. That's a start.

Upon reaching the fifth floor, we run into Dora the Dusk Explorer.

It's going fine. Not that I particularly care, but you do realize that the monsters in here are way stronger than the previous circles, right?

I'll be fine, thanks to Neo Ether and these kids. This is Rus...

Rus is the guy, Clau is the girl.

They don't speak much, but they're very reliable, so don't you worry about me.

Trust me. I am not.

You just keep doing your best at getting to the bottom of this Labyrinth.

I don't need you to explain that to me. Anyway, Mark was worried about you. So just keep your head on a swivel, for his sake.

Of course, I'll keep my eyes open.

At least Ruby doesn't need rescuing. Let's get some distance from her before that changes.

More 'trap' enemies. Which means awesome EXP. Sweet.

Something else that starts appearing from now on are Locked chests. They look like Trap chests, but require a skill or item to open. Felicia already has the Lockpick skill however, so I can just open these bad boys as I please.

Everybody was Kung-Fu Fighting.

Upon entering the sixth floor, we get greeted by this mid-boss. He has a Lab Quest attached to him as well, which you should probably do.

Chlotz warns us that this guy can use powerful Aqua attacks and attacks that cause Panic. Good for him.

I actually get a little too eager and nearly kill him before I get a shot of his stats. I guess my brain had just been running on auto-pilot.

Zectagalum is a speedy boy and has the third tier Aqua spell. This and the gold snake monster spells can actually hurt quite a lot. Team B took a major hit from a Dual Blaze.

Ouch. Granted, none of these teams are really built for tanking Magic attacks. They have some decent MDF, but their main focus is on physical stuff.

After taking him down, we quickly move on. I finally swap out Wake's DLC weapon with something else as well. He loses the Critical+, which is really useful, but the new weapon has a chance to Paralyze instead. I mostly just wanted to change up the look. Unlike the girls weapons, Wake's will actually change appearance.

After ten drat floors of this dungeon, we finally reach the portal for the boss. It took like 35 minutes for me to get through this in one non-stop run. And that was with me avoiding most of the enemies and taking the portals as soon as I discovered them.

Wake, sir. That appears to be the Dusk Spawner for this Circle.

This is the first boss we've encountered with the Dusk element. Not only can it make attacks that hit all of you, but it can increase Dusk Density. But don't forget that Ether element attacks are useful against Dusk element monsters! Be careful, Wake!

Great advice Chlotz. If only we had someone on the team that had Ether element attacks. That's not exactly an easy to access element. I'm not even entirely sure that you can get Ether element attacks at this stage of the game.

No worries. Let's go everyone!

Okay, so Belphegor here is actually a boss worth watching out for. It has formidable defenses, both physical and magical. It is also a boss that can use Dusk Release, which is the opposite of Wake's Ether release. Dusk Release will let bosses reduce the Ether density gauge and erase your speed boost.

It being Dusk element is also dangerous, since your Star Children will be basic element types.

Tri-Onslaught is Wake and Feene's Seventh Burst. It's actually a little disappointing in my mind. They just weirdly fly around each other in a straight line and slash the enemy.

The damage is fairly impressive though. It also gives us an idea of how much HP Belphegor is rocking. Seems to be around 20k or so.

Dusk Release hurts by the way, and unlike Monokuma, Belphegor has the MP to keep hitting you with it. Wake and Feene hold out okay, but that's because Feene is Dusk element herself. This would have hurt a lot more if we took one of the other heroines with us.

I have Team B MECUNITE here for a particular reason. On top of giving them full HP and making them sturdier, it gives them access to Master Heal which is a 100% full party restore.

It's still too early for that though. I hit it with Code TEC instead and manage to reduce Belphegor's TEC, for whatever difference it makes.

Belphegor hits with a standard attack next, which still hits everyone kind of hard, but not nearly as much as Dusk Release. A Dusk Release here probably would have taken out one or two of the individual Star Children.

Now I pop the Master Heal. Belphegor gets one more basic attack in, then is taken down by some standard attacks by everyone.

The battle isn't overly difficult, but you may need to be careful of HP levels during the fight. Dusk Release is kind of difficult to guard against since your Star Children are basic elemental and the AI just throws it out at random, usually whenever you manage to build the Ether Density. If you are somehow having trouble with it, then maybe bring along a Cleric/Warlock or turtle up whenever you need to heal.

The real kicker here is that we aren't finished with this dungeon yet.

All sealed away. We're heading back now.

Sorry, Wake, but hold on a moment. Chief Ruby still hasn't returned yet.

She's still in the Labyrinth, so what? That doesn't sound like a 'me' problem.

Worse yet, we lost contact with her almost an hour ago. The Neo Ether supply she has must be running low by now. I'm getting worried. Can you look for Ruby and her team?

What a pain...

Wake, sir. We cannot leave our comrades behind. We must search for them.

'Comrade' is a strong word, Feene. This is Ruby we're talking about. Honestly, this whole Dusk Circle thing would probably go a lot smoother if we just left her here.

But I can't really say no when you're looking at me like that.

We'll look for them on the way out, Mark. I can't make any promises that we'll find them though.

Excellent. Let us be on our way.

*After meandering around for a bit*

Huh? Is that Ruby over there?

Ruby! Get your rear end over here!

Oh, Wake. What are you doing here?

Chief Ruby! We lost contact with you.

It's all right, the God Brace functions just fine. It just ran out of Neo Ether.

That is the opposite of "all right", Ruby. You can't use Star Energy anymore. You're going to get torn apart if you don't leave.

He's right. Please join his team so we can extract you.

Look at this, Mark! I've never seen a cluster of Dark Crystals this large!

Those are all Dark Crystals?

No. Both of you stop right now. Do not--

:stare:

It's as Enzea said after all.

*The screen rumbles*

Wh-What the...?

...Be cautious.

Oh, great job Ruby! Way to go!

You two stay back. We'll deal with this.

...Is that so?

Go on, then.

According to the Vis-o-matic, there's a high concentration of Dusk Energy there! It's likely that your Ether Count won't increase like you'd want it to! Be careful, Wake!

Thank you, Chlotz.

Why did that sound sarcastic?

Because it was. Now let me focus.

That's right, it's a back-to-back boss fight (sort of). This is the reason I healed up in the last battle. Technically you could just pop the MECUNITE right now and full heal as well. You've probably even got a high enough BP max at this point to be able to do it twice in one dungeon.

Dusk Eater is not as threatening as Belphegor was. It has no magic or Dusk Release nonsense and it's HP is closer to that of a Regred. That being said, it still has really good defense.

It can also still do a wide-ranging attack that deals a fair amount of damage.

He also gives out more EXP than the actual story boss. Again, not really all that scary, but it is something to keep in mind when you are fighting Belphegor.

....

Shut it, Ruby! Ngh... my headache is getting worse...

We're getting out of here, now.

:stare:

They'll attract monsters, you idiot! I am not picking up those drat things again!

Chief, give it up!

No! I can't leave this wealth of potential knowledge behind!

Something's not right with the Chief. I think the Dark Crystals are affecting her. Bring her back by force if you need to!

Yeeesssss... I can do that...

You heard Mark, kids! By force.

By force...

Um... sir? Must you--

Shh, shh, shhhh.... Let me have this...

Mark maybe should have chosen his words a little more cautiously.

-Laboratory-

I'm sorry...

I didn't think that the Dark Crystals would have that much of an effect on me.

It's fine. I was angry, but it all melted away during the trip out.

You took far too much pleasure in dragging me out of there...

Oh no, I took exactly the appropriate amount of pleasure. I assure you.

I'm so happy for you.

According to our measurements, there was a density of Neo Ether approaching 70%. That is, 70% of the Ether Density created from the God's Gift.

Wake, once the Neo Ether project is completed, your burden will be lightened. Just hang in there a little longer.

I'll believe it when I see it. So far all it's done is increase my burden.

Still, I feel very invigorated after having spent some time in that space.

It must be the effects of the Dark Crystals.

Excuse me?

There's nothing wrong with coming along with me to dinner, is there?

I'm... still not sure what you're asking me for.

Normally I'd say Mark was being incredibly dense, but honestly I'm not entirely sure which way Ruby is going with this either. This is kind of a dicey situation for Mark.

You won't join me?

I will if you order me to.

Oh, is that so? Well, it's on me tonight.

Yes, Chlotz. Yes it was. That poor gullible bastard. At least he seems into it.

If he's alright with it, I guess it's okay...

Speaking of being okay with it, how come you're smiling? I figured you'd be grossed out or something.

Normally I would, but this is all just leverage that I have to use against her if she ever crosses me again.

You are a scary dude sometimes.

And that's the end of Chapter 4! It totally is! Pay no attention to any pictures you may scroll past after this point!

-Serenity Chamber/Old Schoolhouse-

Yeah, that's right. We're doing this now.

Don't you think it's a good idea to go swimming on a hot day like this?

We can't use the Academy pool, though.

Huh? Why not?

The monthly maintenance is being done. All facilities are unavailable for now.

That's why none of the clubs are meeting today. Not even the student council!

*Chloe rolls in to the scene*

Hey Chloe. Had some time to kill?

I came by to hang out, too.

It's not very often that everyone gets together to hang out like this.

Well, if there's nothing to do, I might as well go home. I need to help out at the cafe, too.

There's always the public pool in the city.

I'm totally up for that!

I wasn't expecting you to bring up that idea.

I've been non-stop since I got here, some relaxation would be nice. I'm sure everyone else feels the same.

You're right! Let's get going!

-Shopping Mall-

Hey, you girls are gonna choose swimsuits for Serina and Miss Beautiful now, right? C'mon, you gotta let us guys give some input, too.

Not gonna happen! We're going to head to the store, so you two need to stay here.

We'll give detailed and helpful advice!

Wha-- We don't need advice like that! We aren't dress-up dolls!

Besides, girls give better advice at this sort of thing than guys can.

Just go, already. We'll wait here.

Hey! Are you seriously going to let this opportunity slip through our fingers!?

I'd like to get to the pool sometime today. Besides, unless those swimsuits come with transformation sequences then I'm generally uninterested in advice giving.

What!? But...

Yes! That would be hilarious! Also a little disturbing, but mostly hilarious.

Fine, whatever... I'll wait here...

There are so many colors... My eyes are starting to hurt.

Heehee! A girls-only shopping party is kind of fun.

We'd better hurry and make our selections before the guys outside get impatient.

If you could all give me some advice on what to wear, it would be very helpful. I don't usually have the opportunity to buy things such as this...

Well, let's get going, then. Today's mission: find swimsuits for Feene and Serina!

Mm... I am all ears.

Let's get this over with quickly, Feene.

I feel bad for making everyone wait for us, too. Well, then...

Um... How about this for me?

Whoa... You found one already?

Wow, that looks nice.

Mmhmm, I think it would look good on you.

Oh yeah, everyone else is here too. They've just been kinda quiet up until now.

I think this is a cute swimsuit, too.

Ooh... That really is cute.

It's a little flashy, but I think you'll be able to pull it off!

Hm? You do? Then how about this one?

Oh, that one's nice too.

I believe anything would look nice on you, Feene.

Hmm, I'm not sure which to choose...

Why don't you try them all on?

That's a good idea. I'll go to the dressing room, then.

*Feene heads off to be fabulous*

So, did you find any that you like, Serina?

Anything's fine for me, really... Well, how about this one?

Yeah, something with more vivid colors.

Huh? Really? How about this one, then?

Isn't that one a little too childish?

Yes... You'll want something with a little more definition.

Seriously? ...Then, what about this?

Um, that's a bit...

What about this one?

Umm... I'm not too sure.

Th-Then, how's this!?

Lame.

WHAT!?

Oh dear god, just pick a drat swimsuit! :argh:

I'm terribly sorry for making you wait. Whew... There are so many to choose from. Isn't it difficult to make a selection from all of these, Ms. Serina?

Uhh, Ms. Serina?

Yeah, picking just one is really hard...

Heeeeeeey, aren't you ladies done yet?

We told you to wait outside!

Hurry it up, then. The pool's gonna close.

Seriously, what's the hold up?

Hrgh... Which one am I supposed to get!?

The one you're holding right now is cute. Go with it.

Huh? Really?

Yeah, it's adorable, Serina!

Y-You think so? Then, I guess I'll go with this one...

Good, Serina's done. Feene, let's get this show on the road.

Miss Beautiful, the one in your left hand looks cool. It'd look great on you.

But... That's the one they said was too flashy...

And they are correct.

I think it would look good on you, Feene. You can pull it off.

I-Is that so? Then, I will choose this one...

Cool, we're done. See how easy that was? Now let's get a move on.

That went on way longer than it needed to.

:siren: A cutscene approaches from the horizon! It contains a lot of bouncing, and swimsuits, and Feene shows a lotta rear end at one point. NSFW tag on this all the way. You have been warned. Reinforce my point, TCG! :siren:
Pool Party - Check out the cutscene

Let's get it over with.

These screenshots will be very selectively chosen for the purposes of the LP.

Fuuko, Ellie, and Serina all breaking a ton of pool rules here. No running! You'll break your necks!

Chloe is presumably yelling at them about the same thing. Also, she nearly clocks herself in the face with her own chest.

It saddens me that her swimsuit is somehow almost more conservative than her battle costume. She just stands out so much compared to the others.

Narika and Feene stroll by, bouncing the entire way. The revelation that breasts come in various sizes seems to confound Torri.

Fuuko and Ellie are having a good time.

Feene's swimsuit is definitely flashy, as the girls stated.

Serina takes a beach ball straight to the face.

Narika apparently makes the save.

Chloe is sprawled out on the chair back there and there's no way for me to screencap it to an acceptable level.

And everyone has fun in the pool. Except for Wake and Chlotz apparently, who are nowhere to be seen throughout that entire cutscene.

Also, this is the public pool? What kind of pristine public pool, located in the middle of a city, is that empty during a hot summer day?

-Downtown-

Pool party is over now. Everyone who flicked past it and is now gingerly scrolling up to read the rest of the update can pick things up from here.

Ah, that was fun! Going to the pool is the best part about summer!

Got that right. I really needed that.

Hey, Wake. I'm going to do my best to become an A Rank when the next Rank Exam comes around.

And when I make A Rank, I'm thinking of asking her out on a date.

"Her"? You mean Luce?

Yeah. So root for me, okay?

Well, well. Look at the balls on you. I can't even bring myself to tease you about it. That takes guts.

How about you? Haven't you gotten closer to anyone in our group?

It's kind of part of my job, Chlotz.

C'mon, you gotta be at least curious about one of the girls.

Well... there might be someone.

I'm not surprised. I mean, you're surrounded by a bountiful bevy of beauty, after all.

Huh!? Oh drat it. That figures...

Hey, everyone... What's going on?

I see. So that's what you've been thinking.

I think they heard you.

Yeah, I wonder whose fault that was?

Well, guess I'll see you back at the Academy!

*Chlotz loving books it*

Get back here, Chlotz!

At this point we get another "Choose one girl" option for Wake. Feene won the vote by a landslide, so we'll be picking her this time.

Excuse me, sir. Do you know of a place around here where I can eat dinner? I won't be eating at the dorm tonight.

Hm? Oh, Feene. Uh, yeah. I know a few places. Do you mind if I tag along though? Kind of hungry myself.

Not really. Let's just wander around and see what's out there.

Yes. Let's go find a good restaurant.

-Restaurant-

It's a chain place. You okay with that?

I'm fine.

There's a lot on the menu. And I've never been in a restaurant like this.

Oooooooh... What's a drink fountain? Does it spray juice out of a statue's mouth?

No, it's just a dispenser where you select the kind of drink you want.

I see. I will pick that, since I'm thirsty from swimming.

And I think I will order the kid's meal.

You know the kid's meal is for kid's, right?

Is that so?

Ohh... But I was looking forward to trying all that different food...

Well, we can ask about ordering it I suppose.

O-Okay. Maybe it will work if we say that we're children... After all, we aren't entirely adults.

Kind of a grey area. Never know unless you try.

I understand.

*And so they made a polite inquiry*

They... They yelled at us.

Not sure what their problem was. I've got money. Do they not want it or something? Snobbyiest chain restaurant I've ever seen.

I suppose I will have to give up on that idea.

Too bad. Let's just grab something else.

What kind of crap-shack is that place anyway? It's none of your drat business what kind of food they want to eat. If the customer has money and you've got it on the menu, then you give them what they order.

-School Route-

Phew... I'm quite full.

Well, I swam a lot today, so this balances my calorie count. A post-dinner stroll will do just fine.

I'm sorry for making you do this.

Don't apologize. I was hungry too. Besides, it's nice to get a peaceful moment to talk with you a bit.

*giggle* Everything is so new to me here.

But in the end, places with a lot of green like this calm me down.

Sounds pretty relaxing. Not that the city isn't, necessarily. There are a lot more things to do here.

I agree.

I would like to know more about this town.

Sure. Sounds like a plan.

That was a nice way to bring Chapter 4 to a close. Also we're past the pool thing now, so that's the last of that anime craziness. No hot springs trip in here (not in the main story anyway).

Now that we have our focus heroines sorted out, we can get back to rolling through the story. Next time we get cracking on Chapter 5, then we have some catching up to do with Feene. Okay, actually a LOT of catching up to do with Feene.

It's worth it if you like JRPGs. This game isn't spectacular, but it's not terrible. The worst I can say about it overall is that it's average. At least for me, anything average for under $10 is a solid deal. I have paid well above $10 for far worse games that I've still gotten enjoyment out of.

On top of that, it's Spike Chunsoft. I may call them out for their crappy spell checking and grammer in their localization, but they're a company that brings quirky/weird Japanese games over. I'm okay giving them a mention as long as the game isn't insultingly bad. Plus, I can forgive them a little for this grammer and spelling stuff considering their localization office in North America was only opened last year. They're still getting their legs.

Chapter 5! We've moved over the half-way point. poo poo is about to start rolling downhill now. Well, rolling faster I guess.

-2nd-Year Classroom-

Yeah, but we've got the Qualifying Exam before that. A Qualifying Exam that has some stakes, at least for you.

Yeah... I'm going to make sure I become an A Rank on the next exam, no matter what!

Good luck, Chlotz.

You better save some of that luck for yourself, you know. The exam isn't just a Chlotz problem.

Hrgh... Yeah, I need to do my best to make sure I don't get demoted.

*Luce enters*

Hello.

Oh, Luce.

Hey, Luce. It's so good to see you stopping by.

Don't you dare say a word.

Is Alec here?

Mm, it's okay. It wasn't that important anyway.

Huh? You're carrying two boxed lunches...

Oh... Yes, I made too much food. Would you like to eat the extra, Chlotz?

Really!?

You've given me a great deal of help, after all.

Here you go. I hope you like it.

Of course I will! Thanks!

Well, I'll be going.

Hey, let's eat together. We haven't eaten yet, either.

I get all nervous when I'm here, though. You know I'm from the Standard class.

That doesn't matter. Let's eat together.

It's really not a big deal, Luce. You're playing up the Elite and Standard stuff too much.

But...

If it's really that much of a problem for you, then why don't we just go to the Old Schoolhouse?

-Serenity Chamber-

Why is this place called the Serenity Chamber? Who approved that idea?

You're on my list, Wake! I'm gonna leave you in the dust!

*laughing* Please, you're never going to pass me.

We can't know that for sure until I really try!

You tell yourself whatever you want if it helps you feel better.

Good luck, Chlotz.

Haha, the goddess of victory smiles upon me!

Chlotz is all fired up and ready to rock! Can he succeed? Will he get that date with Luce?

-Hallway-

He's definitely way above either of us now...

And he wasn't way above you guys before? Did you jobbers really think you had a shot at catching up to Wake before this exam happened? Get out of here with that delusional garbage.

[3rd-Year Disciple A]: I'm an even bigger fan of God's Gift now!

Hell yeah. God's Gift Groupies. Still seeing a disappointing lack of a fan club though. At least he's getting some attention.

Well, you made it to A Rank, like you wanted. Congrats.

You know what this means though. You are going to ask her out, right?

Well, yeah! I did say I'd do that if I made it to A Rank!

Just making sure you commit. I'm looking forward to seeing you try.

I know you're saying that because you want to see me get shot down, but I'm going to choose to believe that you're being honest. Besides...

I'm gonna need someone like you in my corner cheering me on. Thanks.

*Luce appears*

Ah... Chlotz.

Are you here for Alec?

Hey, Alec... Wait, he's not here again.

He's pretty good at slipping out unseen.

Mm, that's not why I'm here. Fuuko told me that you were promoted to A Rank.

O-Oh. Yeah, I was.

*whispering* Do it. Doooo it.

*whispering* Shut it.

R-Really? Heh he... Well, it was a breeze.

Um... That's all. Well then, see you later.

Huh? You came all this way to just tell me that?

Oh, I'm sorry. You and God's Gift are having a conversation, right?

*Luce starts to leave*

Hm? What is it?

Uh... Nothing. I'll see you later?

Mmhmmm. Bye...

*Luce leaves*

...

Hey! Don't you look at me like that.

You choked.

Y-You moron! I'm not asking her out in public! ...And not in front of you, either!

There's a time and place for everything!

...You totally choked.

Shut up! I did not!

*Alec reappears after apparently sneaking away earlier*

Oh, sure. What do you need?

Come to the research lab after school. I need to speak with you.

Alright, I can do that. Not sure why you're being so secretive about it.

Hm? What's this, Alec? You just walk up, and now you're talking behind my back?

Ah, Chlotz. Congratulations on your promotion to A Rank.

Something tells me that you don't really mean that...

-Laboratory-

*Ruby leaves*

Do you know what this is?

Uhh... some kind of suppository?

What!? No!

Please take this seriously.

I was. I don't know what that thing is, so I took a guess.

So...what? Does that mean the project is complete now?

According to my brother, the final testing still remains to be done. I believe you and your team will be summoned to the labs tomorrow. It seems the lab wishes to confirm whether all of you are compatible with Neo Ether.

Pretty sure I've got the Ether thing covered au naturel.

Once it's done, I intend on volunteering to join a Labyrinth investigation team. Though we won't be on the same team, we both will be able to fight from now on. Most importantly, the handicap between me and you will be gone.

Handicap? Is that really the excuse you're going to pull?

It is no excuse.

Oh yeah, it is.

We will agree to disagree for the time being. The results of Neo-Ether will speak for themselves.

Wait, that's the only reason?

Yes, that's it.

Mmkay. Well, regardless of all that handicap nonsense, let's both work hard on capping those Dusk Circles.

Indeed.

I'm disappointed in you Alec. I didn't think a guy like you would resort to making excuses for (sort of) losing. You're the one that cheated in that training match you know. Shame on you.

-Downtown-

I've said this before, but you weren't summoned here today, Chlotz.

Aw, don't give me the cold shoulder. We've Classmanted! Doesn't that mean anything?

Chlotz, could you please not bring that up in public?

Huh? Oh, um... I don't really know.

Do you know what it is, Fuuko?

Huh? Who knows? Maybe Serina's heard of it.

H-Hey, don't assume I know something like that!

Th-Then, what about you, Feene?

I have not witnessed it in person... But I would assume that it involves a deep, intimate moment between two men...

What do you mean, "intimate"?

Chloe is in to this poo poo.

Nothing untoward or shameful occurred. It was an experiment.

I know some vile rumors have spread amongst the female Disciples, but they are untrue.

Wow, Alec sure is talkative today.

It's your fault.

Giving the girls the wrong idea is all Chlotz does. You'll have to get used to it if you plan to hang around him.

Hey, come on.

That's right, come on. We're almost at the lab.

-Laboratory-

This Neo Ether has infinite possibilities that can even surpass the Star God's Ether.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I strongly suggest not making statements like that, man. You're getting way too big for your britches and Star God will be all too happy to correct that.

Your concern is appreciated, God's Gift.

Hey, don't say I didn't warn you.

Today, I want you to experience the power of the Neo Ether that we have created.

President Rhiod is here with us today, as well.

Thanks, eagle eye. I almost missed him.

This experiment will be its final hurdle. I'd like you heroes to be the ones to cut the ribbon marking its completion.

Well, that's that. Make sure you do your best, everyone.

Alright, guys. Let's get this done.

Because you produce the Star God's Ether, I'd like you to learn about Neo Ether, too.

Works for me. It's nice to be able to sit back for a change.

-Redux-

I feel sick... What is this? Is it really Ether?

Oh... My head is completely spinning...

Those are all probably bad things.

Hey, you guys okay!? Here, hang on to me.

Good heavens, all seven are showing abnormalities...

I see... I had a feeling it would be like this.

Enzea, what is the meaning of this?

Allow me to put it simply. These Disciples normally use Ether generated by the God's Gift... Because of this, they show a strong rejection towards Neo Ether.

What?

It's because his Ether and Neo Ether have a different particulate structure. If we were to take a closer look at the bodies of these girls... It would most likely show that they have an increased affinity to a God's Gift Ether. In other words, this is akin to an allergic reaction to the Neo Ether particles.

To think that our most accomplished female Disciples cannot use it... Enzea, isn't there anything that can be done?

We had suspected this would happen, though. I'm glad we were able to confirm it today.

Ngh...

Then why the poo poo did you test it on all seven of them at once!? Why didn't you just test it on one, like Serina!?

Hey!

Then, that means...

Awww... I was looking forward to the Witches of the Seven Stars rampaging through a Labyrinth.

*sigh* I guess this is on me then. Sorry, guys.

It appears he's changed us... We're completely dependent on his Ether now.

*Serina nails Chlotz*

...Nngh!

That hurt...

Cram it, Chlotz.

-R&D Lab-

But we see that you are capable of becoming stronger than God's Gift with Neo Ether. Alec, become the best in the Core Assault Squad, as well. When that happens, it will be me, Enzea, and you standing at press conferences.

Thank you, Father.

Aww, Alec almost has daddy's love. Good for him. I mean, fat chance of him ever being stronger than Wake, but still.

Break time. Some new stuff has opened up in Fort City. Shop, Quests, and the Labyrinth are just the typical stuff. Day Camp is brand new though. Let's check it out.

I'm good, thanks. The other Star Children could use some good training though.

So yeah, we've got a daycare where we can drop off our layabout Star Children. It's... kind of disappointing actually.

When you pick a Star Child to put into Day Camp, you can choose between Normal and Hard training courses. Normal gives 20% of EXP earned in Labyrinths, while Hard gives 25%. Hard is more expensive though. Neither of them are particularly cheap at the moment either.

That's all there is to it. You go back later to pick them up at a higher level. It's kind of like the Daycare from Pokemon.

I never really use it myself. I suppose it's useful if you don't have access to the DLC and wanted to raise some Star Children to use as City EXP. If you do have the DLC though, then it's far more efficient to just load up a team with the kids you want to level and then go kill one or two Sagitta.

I guess if you really wanted to maximize your training then you could do that and also put kids in the training camp. I've never really felt the need, personally.

Remember to clear out the quests board as well. Taking out Belphegor gives Upgrade Parts A. You can also get stuff like the Stardust Suit armor for Wake and the Twin Breaker weapon.

Unfortunately both of those things are immediately rendered useless by what's in the shop. Shell Blades give an attack and defense boost. The Rabbit Armor gives a really nice shot of speed and defense for only a bit of TEC.

More Sub-Events have opened up with Chlotz and Alec. Luce and Triche are hiding out behind those too. Let's take a break from the story and see what's on a few of their minds.

-2nd-Year Classroom-

Hey you two. What's going on?

Bye.

*Luce leaves*

You two go way back, right?

We've been through a lot together. One day I saved her from a bully, and she's been attached to me ever since.

I never thought she'd become a Disciple.

Why not? What's the problem?

Look at her. She's not ready to fight. She's never even been good at sports. And for as long as I've known her, I've had to keep her out of trouble.

Could you imagine that girl fighting monsters? It's kind of cruel.

Not like she has much of a choice, Alec. When the Brand appears, you go. That's just the way things are.

I'm just thankful she's in the Standard class.

You sure care about her quite a bit. I'm thinking someone has competition...

Nothing. Nothing at all.

I'm sure there's someone you want to protect. And I'm just destined to protect Luce.

Alec seems more dense than even Official Wake. That's hard to top.

-Dojo-

Hey there, Wake. I hear you cleared out that Nest.

Yeah, it didn't take too long. Nests are a lot easier than the Labyrinths.

The way I understand it, the High Priest sent you off without her permission.

Yeah, I bet that really pissed her off.

Yeah, usually Chief Ruby has to give the go ahead for your team to be dispatched. It doesn't help that Chief Ruby and the High Priest hate each other. Apparently he was just relishing in her sense of indignation.

Really? Huh. My opinion of Mattero is a little higher now.

It's funny, Chief Ruby is pretty carefree most of the time. I don't think she's really upset at him for breaking the rules... She's mad because he completely undermined her authority.

Oh yeah, she hates that.

Hold on. Why are you telling me all of this, anyway? Not like you to gossip about stuff like this.

But... She mainly wants people to know that the High Priest ignored protocol.

Like she has any drat right to mount that high horse.

Well, I did my duty, I've spread the story to you. Now, if you'll excuse me. I'm going to count on you to keep spreading it around.

Not happening. If Ruby wants it, then I don't want to do it.

You suck, Ruby. That is some childish, petty-rear end, grade school bullshit. I would ask how Ruby manages to keep her job, but it's clear that she's in a mutual rear end-kissing situation with Enzea.

Anyway, Triche has a little more for us.

-Dojo-

Hey there, Wake.

Granted, every time seven S Rank girls get together it's Academy-wide news.

Not to mention that they've gotten really close to each other. They've got some strong bonds going.

They aren't the only ones who have bonded together recently.

What do you mean by that?

They even held a meeting recently. The topic of discussion was...

"Why does God's Gift get to keep the Witches to himself?" As a result, they've decided to boycott you.

A Disciple was kind enough to tell me all of that... I thought I'd let you know. Now if you'll excuse me.

"Get to keep the Witches to himself?" I'm not their loving owner. What kind of rumors about me are floating around, exactly?

I'm going to go ahead and guess that fan club is composed entirely of dudes who think that they would totally be able to ask out one of the S Rank girls if only God's Gift didn't exist in the general vicinity. That's totally the obstacle in play here.

Let's chat with Chlotz a bit before we move on. We'll save Luce's stuff for another time.

-2nd-Year Classroom-

Of course you do. Hit me.

We've got more monsters roaming than ever.

Most monsters can't get past the Original Core...

Pandora.

Not the time, man.

So they're probably from the active Dusk Circle on the continent.

And now, the Academy has decided to bolster the island's defense.

It's about drat time. What's bad about that?

Even the Standard class Disciples are being send to guard the Nests. I'm worried they're going to send Luce in.

Hard to believe the two of you could be so different and yet so much alike. She's stronger than she looks, Chlotz. Give her some credit.

Err, really? That's hard to believe...

*Chlotz starts to walk away*

Hey, Chlotz. You'll want to maybe watch out for--

*Then he trips over himself*

Whoa!

Ouch... What am I doing, tripping on nothing...

This is just getting sad now.

Finally, Chlotz has some of his patented wisdom for us regarding the thread's new addition to the Focus Heroine team. This should be good.

-2nd-Year Classroom-

I'm so envious, I want to die.

Gonna guess you're talking about Feene, right?

Who else would I be talking about? I was starting to wonder what was going on between you two.

Don't tell me you're dating her already.

No, Chlotz. I haven't started dating her.

Thought so... Besides, I heard she was sweet on some guy back home.

Though maybe you've still got a chance to be her someone special. Listen, if you want to take Feene to the Star Conception Festival... You gotta make her feel like she belongs, you know?

She does feel like she belongs Chlotz. She just joined us for shopping and a pool trip, then me and her went out and grabbed a bite to eat. How much more can someone belong?

Sure, Chlotz. At least this marks the end of your little advice sessions.

But what about Serina? I've--

No!

The thread was very decisive on that one, Chlotz. That advice would fall on deaf ears.

-School Gate-

What's with that crowd? Is Enzea hanging out here again?

[Standard Disciple A]: Whoa, what does this say? They're recruiting for a "Core Assault Squad"...?

[Standard Disciple B]: Right after Neo Ether was finished, too! We're not like God's Gift. Who would want to go into a deadly Labyrinth by himself?

[Standard Disciple A]: Even if doing that guarantees us a good life after this, it's no good if we die.

God's Gift isn't going to die that easily.

That's right, it's the dead man walking that's keeping you idiots alive.

Listen, if you aren't going to put up then just shut up, okay? Now piss off.

[Standard Disciple B]: R-Right...

*Those two assholes loving book it*

Whatever.

That reminds me, Alec and Triche volunteered for this group. The team's going to be carefully selected, but I bet those two will make it.

Of course they'll make the cut. Who else would they recruit if not Alec and Triche? Not exactly a big bag of prime candidates at this Academy.

I guess we've got some rivals now, wouldn't you say?

"Rivals" is a strong word. Let's just call them teammates.

-Laboratory-

Mate-o-tron version 4!

Wait, so the last one we tried was the third iteration?

No, that was version 1.

Development went through a number of twists and turns to reach this fourth iteration. It's sad that the second and third versions will never see the light of day.

But, thanks to those noble sacrifices, the 4th version has dramatic new developments.

So, what are these "dramatic developments"? You kept saying that it'll be a surprise, but you wouldn't even tell me about it.

I don't know why, but something tells me I'm not going to like this.

......

Yaaayyy....

Does that mean... three guys--

If this succeeds, special Star Children that we've never seen before may be born. How about it? Doesn't thinking about that get you excited?

This has gone on long enough.

What do you mean, "gone on long enough"? This is a very important experiment. If you're participating half-heartedly in these, then you're free to leave at once.

Really? Sweet. Peace out!

You also give up your pay.

...

Well?

I'm debating it.

...Fine. I'll stay, for now.

Dammit woman, what are they changing into!? They're wearing the exact same outfit they always do!

-Ritual-

Is everyone ready to go? We'll first conduct the experiment with just two people. You can decide who goes first.

Who'll go first today?

I just want to get this over and done with. Would it be alright if I go first?

Fine with me. Who do you want to go with?

Either is fine. Just do whatever you want.

...What in the world is she talking about?

She's being a creep. Just try and ignore her.

Anyway, if it gets this done with quicker then I'll go with you. Come on.

Hopefully it goes well this time...

*More Classmanting*

Alright, it's finally a success!

We did it, Chief Ruby!

Let's keep this up and try with three of you this time! God's Gift, you have the most experience, so make sure you lead the other two.

Yeah, yeah. I know how this works Ruby. Cram it.

Y-You better be gentle with us!

Good luck with that.

W Classmanting? Am I missing something there, game?

Man, we're impressive. I guess we're perfectly compatible?

Whew... there is no doubt that this ritual is much more exhausting than fighting.

We'd like to examine these Star Children at the lab for a while.

Well done to all three of you!

:science: Science!

-Downtown-

I swear that Mark likes Chief Ruby.

Likes?

I'm not interested.

Yeah, I thought you'd say that.

If you're curious, then you should ask him.

Please, as if it would ever be that easy. You really think Mark would answer that?

That's not the issue here...

You really don't do conversations like these, huh. I bet you've never been in love before.

I won't deny it, but...

Huh? Me? Uh... Of course I am!

To be honest, that's rather surprising. I didn't know that you had a lover.

Wha-- I said nothing about having a lover!

Didn't you say that you're in love though?

Hrgh, well, that's...

Leave him be, Alec. He's got someone he likes. If it feels like love, it is.

Dude, I don't know how you said that with a straight face.

Hm... That is one way of thinking of it.

*sigh* Well, that was a buzz-kill...

I know, let's go eat before heading back. There's a great ramen shop nearby.

Yeah, I could go for something to eat. You in, Alec?

Look at you. Finally interested in hanging with the guys.

Alright, it's decided then!

-2nd-Year Classroom-

Guys, I have some bad news...

Been getting a lot of that lately. What happened now?

Dematerialized...?

:eng99: Science...

The cause is currently under investigation. But apparently those Star Children were very unstable and couldn't stay for long. It's sad... to have a child's light go out so young.

So the experiment was a failure...

I keep warning people not to gently caress around in Star God's territory.

Well, it's time for my training. Excuse me.

*Alec leaves*

You are a really bad judge of character, Chlotz.

-Redux-

Ah, have you come to train?

Sort of. I wanted to ask about the Star Children incident as well.

Right... Even the Chief looked depressed.

Well, maybe she'll stop getting her sick little kicks out of those experiments now. Should be a sobering experience.

Also, Alec came by a moment ago. He gave a silent prayer in the room where the Star Children had been... then he left.

It must have affected him deeply, too.

Yeah, that's a very 'Alec' thing to do.

I was just thinking about sending a message to all of you to come here.

Why? What's going on? More bad news I take it?

The time we've been waiting for is here. The fifth Dusk Circle has activated.

-Laboratory-

This Dusk Circle is within the Sanzur mountain range, the highest in the world. Nearby villages have been evacuated, and teams of Disciples are heading there.

*Alec and Triche enter*

Ah, Alec and Triche!

We'll be on a different team assaulting the Labyrinth at the same time you are.

You know more about the Labyrinths than we do. Please, tell us what you know.

Okay, first rule is: Do not bum rush the Dusk Spawner. I know that's what Alec is planning. Also...

Uhh...

....

....

*Also Rus and Clau are here, apparently*

The Core Assault Squad's ready to be deployed already?

Of course they're not, Serina. But AngelMarker is going to send them in anyway because it's staffed by a bunch of reckless morons.

It's a team of four, but they're the best of the best.

That seems reassuring.

You're all very reassuring to us.

Well, the mission to enter the Labyrinth has been approved, and is given. I know I'm repeating myself, but make sure you're all fully prepared to go in. Got that?

[All]: Got it!

I know what I'm doing, Ruby.

And that's it. We're clear for the next Labyrinth.

Which also means that we're clear for bonding. Feene is going to need her own update, because we need to catch up on all of her glossed over events. I'll try and fit Chloe and Narika into the update following that.

'W' is sometimes used as short for "double" in Japanese. So it's Double Classmanting.

What? It seemed like
a good idea at the time.

Remember the W-Summon Materia in FF7? It let you Summon twice in a row. They just didn't bother changing the name for the western version, probably because it already fit the character/space limit for the small command window.

The reason for that is here in Japan, it's pretty common to pronounce "W" the same as "Double" (Double-oo).

Also, I know it's minor and nitpicky, but it bothers me that Wake and Chlotz's sprites don't change at all to reflect the fact they've gone up in rank.

Haven't heard of that before. It makes sense in the FFVII example, but still not quite here. I guess it's the second level of Classmanting, maybe. It involves three guys though. You'd think they would have gone with Tri-Manting.

TracerK posted:

We don't see any Elites lower than B rank, so it's possible that the Blue uniform Chlotz has is the one that every Elite wears from Ranks F to A. The gold lined outfit the girls, Alec, and Triche wear is for S-Ranks, which Chlotz still isn't. Wake's outfit is a special design that signifies he is God's Gift, so there is no rank equivalent. Chlotz makes a passing remark about it way back at the start of Update 3.

Edit: I remembered that there are some NPC 3rd Years that wear the gold lined outfits as well. I would imagine that this was an oversight while creating NPC models. If the gold was for A ranks as well then there's no reason they couldn't change Chlotz.

How many death flags has Alec raised by now?
drat, I like the guy. I was kinda hoping we'd get to bond by putting rear end in a top hat dad in his place.
E: and I won't even bother commenting on the Neo Ether. Everyone can see how that will end.

It would be awesome if we could dance!
It'd be culturally appropriate that the Feene fanclub is mostly girls. It's something that comes up often in anime that there's a girl who's popular with girls, typically the sporty, outgoing, acting self assured type. I've read and heard sometimes that this is a thing in actual real life Japan, but I have a hard time believing it.

I believe so. Not sure how you want to do that. If you have a junk email then I could send a gift certificate code and you could apply it to your account yourself. Or you could try the Youtube Chat thingy they've got now, if you're on Youtube. Just let me know whichever way you are comfortable with.

I believe that's exactly the kind of fan club that Feene has. It's already been shown that she has at least one Elite girl following her around and calling her "Lady Feene". We'll see in the next update, during her bonding catch up, that Feene attracts quite a bit of attention from female students. The Starball player mentioned in Feene's summary is especially thirsty for our Dusk Heroine.

For everyone else: I'll get started on the next update tomorrow. This is the final week of lectures, so my schedule as all kinds of blocked at the moment. Good news is that I should have plenty of time in December for update fun. Who knows? Maybe I'll be able to line up the Star Conception Festival with actual Christmas. Wouldn't that be festive as all hell.

Uh oh. Do I use Ariadne thread or Goho-M?

W is pronounced double-u in English, because the w letter originally represented 2 u's. It was latter on that it became it's own letter. The reason why it looks like 2 v's is because v and u were originally the same letter, only becoming different letters in the early modern period, after w became it's own letter. So W representing double in Japanese games has it's origins in the very creation of the letter. :eng101:

I had always thought that the black shoulder pads that s-ranks get was the "unique" part of Wake's uniform, but it makes sense that the red is unique too. We know that characters get new uniforms when they go up in rank from Serina, so it would make sense if blue uniforms and no shoulderpads represented elites below s rank, red uniforms and black shoulderpads represent God's gift, and gold uniforms and black shoulderpads represent s-ranks.

~Bonding Focus: Chapter 5 (Catching up with Feene)~

The thread has decided to elevate Feene to the to heroine triad. As such:

We've got a poo poo load of stuff to catch up on with her. We've only seen her general introduction and the first two events.

In order to put her on par with Narika and Chloe, we'll need to get through everything from Classmating 2 up to the current bond gauge max. While I did summarize her route, her popularity warrants an in-depth treatment. So let's get this rolling.

-Ritual Hall-

Yeah, I've kind of been slacking a bit on shoring up the Star Child forces. Need to remedy that.

I'm prepared. Please, whenever you're ready to begin.

Glad to see you're on board. Let's give it our best.

Understood.

I am still in the trial and error stage... But I will do the best I can so that a strong Star Child is born.

Don't overthink it. Just let it happen naturally.

New classes are really thin right now, but I do have two that I can showcase.

Bondsman is opened up by creating one of each of the base classes (so it's basically story gated). They've got a fairly good balance of stats, although they are a little slow and not especially gifted in magic.

Bondsman are spear wielders, like Paladins and Lancers. Their attack skills tend to hit from multiple directions and they also get access to Temple Chain, which is an attack skill that has a chance to boost the Chain Drive.

I really love their designs, personally. The eye patches are a little weird, but the 'half-scissor' weapon and thread hat is a cute combo. Plus, those suits are dapper as poo poo.

Which reminds me something I haven't pointed out yet. I love the suit designs in this game. Those AngelMarker suits look especially loving sleek, and I wish I had the body to actually pull something like that off.

Whew... I see... It appears I'm getting more and more used to it.

And that feeling determines how strong the Star Child will be.

That's just my theory, but that's how I understand it.

I don't know if that's so much a theory as it is what actually happens. Either way, that's a good explanation.

Thank you.

But this is all academic. I must learn it first hand.

I believe in order to do that, I will have to touch you more... Though... It is a tad embarrassing to touch a man...

I'm not exactly fully comfortable with this either, you know. I might look it, but all of this stuff is still pretty embarrassing for me.

*giggle* It seems we share that trait. It's comforting to know that.

This Star Child has an even more fearless look than our last one. Let us both continue to grow.

-Courtyard-

(I don't see Feene around here anywhere. I wonder what happened to that Photography Club idea? She's hasn't mentioned it recently.)

Hm? A stray, maybe?

Meow meow!

Hey, wait a second. Isn't that Feene's ribbon? What are you doing with that around your neck?

Meooooow.

Do you want me to follow you?

Meow.

You're right. It is weird that I'm talking to a cat. I'll still follow you, though.

-Old Schoolhouse-

Meow, meow!

Calm down, I'm coming. Why the hell did you bring me here anyway? This is just the old schoolhouse.

(Huh? Is that Feene up there?)

Hmmmm... How does one use this duster tool?

(Oh, she left her camera on the table. Paparazzi time.)

Feene, don't move!

Wha...!?

*Camera flash*

Wah!?

O-Oh, it was you... What are you doing there?

I could ask you the same question. What's with the duster and head scarf?

Oh... I'm cleaning. The Academy has allowed me to use this classroom for the Photography Club. I was thinking of fetching you after I had finished cleaning, but... It seems you've already discovered the whole thing.

You should have fetched me sooner. Let me give you a hand.

Oh, no. I would really rather not be any trouble. I can handle this myself.

You sure? Might take a while if you have to study the inner workings of a duster first.

Uh... I'd prefer if you didn't mention that...

The folks back home begged me not to help out.

Then let me handle that. I really don't mind.

But... I have to do something. If it's simply hard labor, I should be able to handle it.

Then just focus on wiping the floors, then.

Um... I thought I told you in complete honesty about my shortcomings...

It's better than you being up on a chair like that.

Y-You're right...

As long as I'm careful not to step into the bucket and run into the blackboard...

Yes, I think I can do it!

Really? You're THAT bad at cleaning?

*Cleaning time!*

Thank you so much. I was able to finish so much sooner thanks to your help.

By the way, how did you know where I was?

There was a cat by the flower bed that led me here.

Cat...? Ah, that must be Stray. He was living in the flower bed, and when I fed him, he took a shine to me. But... I don't see Stray.

Huh... I could have sworn he was still here a minute ago.

Oh... The fish sausage I was going to give him later is missing.

My... What a rascal.

Sneaky little guy. Anyway, now that the cleaning is done with, congrats on the Photography Club becoming official.

Thank you. I didn't have much hope when I applied, but I was granted permission so quickly. Now I have an honest reason to decline the other clubs.

Looks like it all worked out. See? I told you to give it a shot. Oh... right. Here, this is your camera.

Oh, you took a picture of me, didn't you? I was thinking of sending that to my friends.

I may be the only member of the Photography Club, but I suspect I will be quite busy.

Hey, I could always help out. I'm sure there's something I could manage to do.

But you're welcome to come by and say hello, if you would like. I plan on being here most of the time after school.

Got it. I'll drop by whenever I get the chance.

Yes, please.

The sun will be setting soon. Thank you so much for all your help.

Fine Glass Photography is in business. Also, Feene sucks at cleaning. She has to have something she isn't good at of course. I think the game takes it too far by implying that this incredibly skilled swordswoman and talented athlete starts tripping over her own two feet when trying to push a broom or mop around the floor.

-Hallway-

(I should probably drop by Feene's club. Check on how she's making out with it.)

Hey, there you are! Are you free? Let's go grab a bite to eat on the way home.

Can't. I'm heading over to the Photography Club.

What? You joined the Photography Club!? We... We have a Photography Club?

Feene started it up. It's just her right now though, so I was going to help her out. I kind of pushed her to do it, so I kind of owe her some help.

A photo shoot... With just the two of you... Wait... Does that mean...

Chloootz... don't--

I knew you were going to say something stupid. How did you arrive at that conclusion?

Why else would you join a photography club where the only other member was a girl? Come on, photographs = nude, dude. It's the eternal dream of all men!

*Feene is drawn to the sound of Chlotz being a creep*

Is that true?

Waaah!? Well, it's not my dream! I'm not a barbarian! It's... Uh... It's this guy! He can't control himself, he's an animal!

Excuse me!?

I... must be going now. Sorry for bothering you.

*Chlotz loving books it*

Get back here Chlotz! You're going to pay for that!

I-I see... He wishes to take those kinds of photos...

That bastard... *sigh*

Sorry about him. So, is the Photography Club off today?

Oh, no it's not. I was looking for you. Do you have time? I want to talk to you in the club room.

Yeah, I've got time. I was actually planning on going to check in on you before he showed up.

That's good to know. Shall we?

-Old Schoolhouse-

It's about that picture you took last time.

You mean when you were cleaning?

Yes, that's the one. The photo was very popular with my friends back home.

Is that so?

They swear they've never seen that side of me before.

What did they mean by that?

I don't know. I was hoping maybe you would know...

I can't really say for sure. They know you a lot better than I do.

Hmmm... It looks like there's so much more to photography than I ever realized. And the more photos I take, the more interested I am in it. I wonder how the folks back home see me in the photo you took...

Did you ask them?

I tried asking them, but they won't tell me. They told me that it was something I need to find out for myself.

Sometimes they tell me that I'm a bit slow. I wouldn't say I was slow at all on the battlefield...

So, I have a favor to ask of you.

You sure about that?

Yes. I want to send a whole bundle of photos that aren't self-portraits. If that's what they want to see, then that's what I want to send them. And I suspect that it would be a great way to study photography.

I really want to know what this side of me is that they've never seen before.

I guess I can help with that.

Why don't you join the Photography Club?

Sounds fun, but I can be pretty busy at times. Just a warning.

Of course, I wouldn't complain if you only came when you have time.

I-I've even figured out how I will repay your kindness... Um... Do you recall the conversation from earlier?

Which conversation was that?

But if taking such photos is what you most solemnly desire...

Feene, please don't take the stupid stuff Chlotz says as fact. That's--

I heard from Fuuko that you're also on the Fencing Team. So, it would be selfish of me to take your time without giving something in exchange. And... Then I heard that you like th-that kind of photo...

Feene, that was Chlotz being an idiot. I'm telling you--

O-Of course... I will only do it after you've learned to take artistic photos!

We'll revisit this misunderstanding another time.

The main takeaway here is that I am willing to help you out.

Th-Thank you! I will stay true to me word.

Oh... Come to think of it, do you have your own camera? Would you like to use mine?

I don't have my own camera, but I think it would be a good idea for me to get my own. We can't go juggling your camera around between us.

Really? Then let's go find you one together. I know a shop that sells good used cameras.

Sounds good to me.

*giggle* I'm looking forward to it.

Up until now, I never had anything that I would actually call a hobby.

This may be my first... And I've never been this excited to do something.

Of course, this all comes after defeating monsters. Photography is just a hobby.

Feene was oddly... insistent on that whole nude photo thing. I guess that's for the best. If Feene was like Serina then either Chlotz or Wake would have gotten a beating. Feene sort of has the fighting ability to lay a beating.

Anyway, no breaks for Feene. We need to fit a lot in. Straight ahead to the next Classmating event.

-Ritual Hall-

Ready to go?

I'm ready. Should I do the same thing as before?

That's fine and all, but you should really just go with the flow.

Go... with the flow?

If you insist. I will try to go with the flow.

I'm... still not used to these things...

I'm not going to do that, Feene. Don't worry about that.

Okay. Then please be gentle.

*Classmating happens*

I'm saving the other new class for the next update. Got to space them out as much as I can.

*pant* I... was a bit nervous this time. I never expected you to grab my hand like that.

Sorry. You held it out to me though, so I figured you were fine with it.

I-I'm not opposed to it... Um... I knew that contact would be required for the ritual... And you do obey certain boundaries, so I don't worry about that.

(Why is she so concerned with that? Is someone spreading rumors about me or something?)

But I just don't understand...

I'll try and be more careful about that next time. I must have gotten carried away with how comfortable the others have become with it.

Oh... You don't have to worry about that. As I just said, it's not that I mind it... I'm going to go outside and get a little air. I-I feel a bit warm... And I think I would prefer it you didn't see me like this.

-Old Schoolhouse-

Hey, Feene. I decided to swing by.

*giggle* Welcome to the Photography Club. Today is the first club activity since you joined the Photography Club.

I'm down with learning new things. Make sure you teach me the ropes.

I would be happy to. Now shall we go to the city?

I found you some cameras suitable for a novice.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that whole 'buying a camera' business.

So you went and did the research for me?

Of course. A promise must be kept at all costs.

You don't have to take that so seriously you know. It's just a little camera shopping.

There's no such thing as a small promise. Every promise kept will turn into trust.

I truly believe that.

You're really dedicated to getting stronger.

Wh-What are you saying? I still have a ways to go before I can call myself strong. If I'm not paying attention, I'll be too focused on my current self to progress.

That's why I repeat these words to myself from time to time. I am here today thanks to the support of many people... I must not betray the trust of even one of them.

Riiiight. So are we going to go get that camera or...?

Oh... I apologize. I'm going on, aren't I? My friends would always scold me when I went on so seriously. Please don't mind me when I'm like that. Now then, we should get to town before the sun sets. I hope we can find the perfect camera for you.

-Shop-

Let's see.... This shelf.

I recommend the one on the far right.

You mean this one? Why's that?

Holy... For that price it drat well better.

That's too much, even for me. What else you got?

Hmmmmm... How about this one?

It can fit in the palm of your hand and it's not too expensive.

Oh... The tag says that it's been modified.

Why would anyone go through all the hassle of cropping out curtains?

I'm a little envious of how innocent you are sometimes.

Anyway, I'd like to avoid having my name attached to a sale like that. How about I just go with this one? It's a little old, but it looks like it's in solid shape.

[Shop Clerk]: Ooh, you got a good eye there, buddy. That's the first magic-optic camera ever made: Raika. It required too much Star Energy to run it, so it was discontinued quickly.

Raika... I've heard of that before.

But why on earth would something like this be in the bargain bin...?

That sounds pretty badass. I'll get it.

Yes, it suits you.

[Shop Clerk]: Look, I'm sorry, but I just can't let you have it. It's a good display piece.

Are you or are you not selling cameras? If you want it as a display piece then don't put a drat price on it. Since it HAS a price tag on it, I want to purchase it.

[Shop Clerk]: Unless you have enough Star Energy to press the shutter release button, give up.

...

*Wake presses the button. You know, because he's GOD'S GIFT*

[Shop Clerk]: Er... Eh... Well, since both of you came to buy it, you both have to press the button!

...So that's how it's going to be, huh? Feene, looks like you need to do it too.

Oh, I must not have understood the conditions. Then allow me.

*Feene presses the button. You know, because she's an ELITE DISCIPLE*

Does this guy just never leave his shop or something? How do you live in Fort City and not know a thing about the saviour of prophecy and an entire rank of Disciple?

[Shop Clerk]: You can both do it!? Argh!

Ring. It. Up.

[Shop Clerk]: Urrrrrgh... Alright, I'll sell it to you. I am in the business of selling cameras... Go ahead, take romantic shots of you two, ya love birds! drat it!

Wha...!?

I'm too young for those... kinds of relationships... Oh, er... But that doesn't mean we're doing anything outside of a relationship either! I see him with pure and clear eyes--

Is that so? How about you give us a look at those pure and clear eyes?

Huh...?

*Wake snaps a picture*

Wh-What!? Wh-Wh-What are you taking my picture for!?

Because that's the entire reason we came out here to buy a camera?

Y-Yes, but you shouldn't take photos of me like this! We can't let this poor shop owner get the wrong idea about us!

Oh, right. Speaking of that. Here's what I owe you.

[Shop Clerk]: Yeah, take it! You take your nice camera and your flirting and leave... *sniff*

*sigh* You really aren't listening, are you?

-Women's Dorm-

Thank you for escorting me back to the dorms.

This thing is awesome. Cool name and a cool legendary backstory. I am fully invested in this Photography stuff now.

*giggle* I'm glad you like it.

I know! Why don't you photograph some of the other Disciples as well? I'm sure they would all be happy to have their picture taken.

Not a chance.

Why not?

You asked me to get pictures of you. That means this camera is Feene-only until you figure out that 'other side of you'.

Is that so...

I'll get that perfect picture of you that will make it all make sense. Your friends will love it.

Yes, please do.

I really cannot wait to see what photo you will take.

So how many professions does this make for our hero? Handyman, Talent Manager, Magical Transformation Trinket, Paranormal Investigator, Scribe, and now Model Photographer.

-Old Schoolhouse-

And now, as is custom for the heroine routes, it's time we get acquainted with the Feene's Jerk NPC. This one is only a jerk to Wake though. She's a little....territorial when it comes to Feene. You'll see shortly.

Hmm. There's Feene's bag, but no sign of her. There's a note, too. "Dear sir, I am out photographing the Academy."

Even in writing she refuses to use my name.

-Flower Bed-

(Found her. Oh, there's that cat again.)

Aren't you lonely? You're always out here by yourself.

I bet you have friends and family back home, don't you? And do you wish that you could just go back to them? I do... I am... a bit lonely myself...

(That's... uhh... not what I expected to hear...)

There you are. I was searching the Academy for you.

O-Ohhh!?

I just arrived.

I-I see... Um... You didn't hear anything, did you?

No. Was I supposed to?

Nothing... I was just curious... Phew.

Ah... I see you brought your camera. Did you come for Photography Club?

Yeah. I saw your note at the Old Schoolhouse, so I went to look for you. Are you going to be getting pictures of the flowers today?

No, I was thinking of taking photos at the gym today. Would you like to join me? I have permission to shoot in there.

Sure. Huh, guess I'll be getting some pictures of you getting pictures.

*giggle* That's a picture I would not be able to take myself.

But please photograph the other Disciples as well. It would be boring if you only took photos of me.

No can do Prez. I need to stay focused on you. Those are the pictures your friends want.

Th-That's right, huh...

Why are you going through all this trouble for me?

I promised to help you. Promises have to be kept, right?

That's downright noble of you.

Okay, I understand. I'll let you take my photo! Just make sure that your photos do me justice.

Leave it to me. I've got this covered.

*giggle* Now, let's go to the gym.

-Gymnasium-

Looks like there's a Starball game going on.

Apparently there's a tournament coming up.

I was asked to take pictures so they can check their form.

Oh, Feene! You're here.

Of course. I owe you for lending your name for the founding of the Photography Club.

Oh, that's nothing. I mean, what I really wanted was for you to play Starball with me... It's such a waste of your good talent.

I didn't feel it was appropriate to interfere with your team.

But I will take plenty of pictures to try and make it up to you.

Sure thing. If you get any good shots, make sure to send them my way.

Yes. He's my personal photographer. He's going to take pictures of me.

Yeah, also the one saving you and everyone you love from being swarmed by an unstoppable wave of monsters. You're welcome.

Hmmmmmmm. Yeah, whatever. Let's get down to the important details. You're not planning to make a move on Feene when she drops her guard, are you?

What are you saying, Aya?

Like Feene ever lets her guard down.

Was... Was that a compliment? I bet it was, since it's coming from you...

Wow. That was no compliment. Feene, that was an insult.

Well, I don't really see myself as cute, but...

It was a compliment Feene. Aya's just a little confused because of all the times she's been hit in the face with a Starball.

All jokes aside. I don't want you confusing Feene with your half-assed romance.

A-Aya! We're not like that! Please, you're embarrassing me in front of him.

Okay, okay. That's all I wanted to say.

*Aya leaves*

*sigh* I'm sorry. I'll tell her that I asked you to take pictures of me...

I don't mind it. Let's just start getting pictures. We've wasted enough time already.

You're right.

What was that?

N-Nothing. Let's get started.

*Feene starts to leave but trips or stumbles or something*

W-Whaaah!?

Sweet shot!

*Wake snaps a pic*

Hey... I would prefer if you photographed me when I had a little more poise... *sigh* I'm sending these to my friends...

And that's why I got that picture. I bet they've never seen you trip over yourself like that.

You're supposed to be helping me...

You've already become obsessed with photography...

Sorry. Maybe I am getting a little carried away with this.

-Old Schoolhouse-

Alright, I've taken some good photos today.

Oh, before I forget: can I have your data as well? I'll send the photos you took to my friends back home.

You got it. Have fun looking through them.

Thank you. I will copy it immediately.

So, Feene. I was wondering something.

Yes?

Do you just leave notes like that every time I'm not here?

Oh that... Yes, I write it every time you aren't here. I thought it would be lonely, coming to an empty room after school.

Well, I appreciate it. The others usually leave me high and dry with that kind of thing.

Huh? Oh... It's nothing.

Oh, er, just a little!

I know you have lots of things to do... It means a lot to me that you come by as often as you do.

Oh, the transfer is done. Thank you, you can have this back.

Thanks. I hope there's at least one good one in there.

I'm sure there is. I'll check it later. I can't wait to see what pictures you took of me.

Now, let's end today's club activities.

If I'm out taking pictures, I'll leave a note for you.

Phew. Almost there. Back to classmating.

-Ritual Hall-

I suppose he wouldn't keep inviting me to this ritual if they weren't...

*pant* *pant* Sorry... I'm running late. Have you been waiting long?

Oh... N-No, I just got here myself. I hope that a stronger Star Child will be born to help you out more.

Same here. We've gotten some really powerful ones lately.

I actually feel somewhat relieved to hear you say that.

Now, let's both do our best.

*OoohOoohooo, touch her heart, something-something-something vague sex allusion*

*pant* *pant* *pant* Yes... That felt like it went well.

I believe a strong Star Child was born.

*giggle* Our child looks a bit like you. Please take good care of our precious child.

Oh, don't worry. I've got some plans for this one. They're destined for great things.

I think so too...

I feel like I had lost sight of something important.

Let us raise our children well.

Okay, you're starting to make it weird.

-Old Schoolhouse-

Let's see... These are photos of the Academy. These are photos I took in the city... And these are the ones he took...

*giggle* I'm a little ashamed to be looking at so many pictures of myself.

Find any you like?

Ahhh!

P-Please don't pop out of nowhere like that! *sigh* I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest...

Sorry. Wasn't trying to scare you.

Oh... no. It was my fault for getting so wrapped up in what I was doing. I'm sorry you caught me so engroosed in my own photo. I am so embarrassed...

It was kind of cute, actually.

That surprised look you had that little squeal you let out. I should have had my camera at the ready. Missed a prime shot.

P-Please don't say things like that. I won't be able to let my guard down at all...

So what pictures do you have in the pile?

Oh... Those are the photos of the Starball Team I took the other day.

That and pictures I took of some Disciples I know. And pictures of Stray in the flower bed.

So pictures of all your Academy friends, huh?

Huh? Friends...?

What? Is that not right?

Oh, nothing...

You know, now that I think about it, you're right.

But I have not done anything that would make me their friend.

Hey, you did her a favour by getting all those pictures of her.

But that's the only thing I've done... I don't think that makes us friends...

I have a feeling that Aya does not share your assessment on that.

Do you really think so?

Aya, why are you here?

I told you before, right? There's a Starball tournament between the Disciples and alumni. We won the preliminaries, and next is the championship. So as the Photography Club, I want you to take pictures of us in action. I wanted you to play in the tournament, but at least you can root me on.

Well, of course!

You helped me start this club, so please allow me to do that much.

It's a promise! Ohhh, and you. Have you been taking good pictures of Feene?

Not that it's any of your business, but yes. I've gotten plenty.

Hmmm... Whatever. Let me just say this.

Why does every rando nobody in this Academy think they can take me on? I'm serious, I could kill everyone here except for maybe Alec, Feene and Triche, without breaking a sweat.

A-Aya! Please, don't make things any more difficult for me...

I just wanted to warn him, that's all.

And sir, please refrain from making such horrible comments.

No promises on that one.

Alright, remember your promise!

*Aya leaves*

*sigh* I'm not so sure I can keep up with her.

Well, I'll be right there with you. I might not like her, but I have to be around to get pictures of you having fun.

Yes, please do.

What do you mean by that?

Oh... Never mind me. It's nothing. Let's just enjoy taking those pictures.

And we have to stop it there for now. There's just too much excitement in Feene's route for one update to contain.

Feene's last available event is actually a little short, and Classmating 5 isn't particularly long either. So I'll space out her remaining four events over the next two bonding updates.

Speaking of next time, we get to bring our other two focus heroines back into the spotlight. I hope you all had a nice relaxing time with Feene, because Chloe and Narika's routes have slowly become weird and concerning. That won't be changing any time soon.

I'M SORRY, OK!? I admit I've made some mistakes, and Jones has clearly paid for them.
...
But ma'am! Jones' only crime was looking at the wrong files!
...
I beg of you, don't ship away Jones, he has a wife and kids!

I'm not sure if I'm on the ball about this, but so far it seems like Feene is pretty much the only heroine so far who seems to have genuine chemistry with Wake. Hell, even Aya's downright saintly compared to the other NPC jackasses in the other routes - and her concerns are actually somewhat justified given Feene's reactions!

It feels like it's night and day compared to the weirdness of everyone else barring Fuuko.

I don't really know what it is, but something about the difference between Feene's dialogue portrait and 3D model bothers me a lot more than any of the other girls.
