I kept thinking there had to be something more, and I guess I was wrong.

Jack in!! MegaMan, Execute!
It doesn't help that he's probably the oldest guy in the Sky Knights and his two female associates are the daughter of the guy in charge of all of their forces and a sadist White Mage, neither of whom would respect his idea of seniority.

Also, Heinkel's the leader, not him. It's probably why he starts throwing his weight around really hard when he's off on his own during the prologue.

Entry 101: Morbid Misinterpretations of Pop Songs

The Sky Knights have been taught a lesson and probably won't attack Caldisla again. Probably.

Anyway, the party heads to Florem.

The region is surprisingly quiet and calm. As the party passes through Witherwood, they spot a peaceful wildlife scene.

Ooh, they're absolutely magnificent!

Oh, but aren't there sheep that don't have any horns at all?

Allow me! Tiz may be an expert what with his previous life as a sheepherder, but I know a thing or two as well.

You see, depending on the species, there are sheep with horns and sheep without. And with some species, only the rams have horns. As for horn shapes, they vary. For example, some are shaped like a spiral, and others like a corkscrew.

Interesting...

I find that animal encyclopedia you keep glancing at rather interesting, too.

[img]https://lpix.org/2703269/agnes_happy.png[img][/img] But since you have been most informative, I shall let it pass this time!

Ha ha ha! Lucky me! My stock just went up today!

But as I said, Tiz is the expert here, so I defer to his knowledge.

Umm...

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but that's not a sheep. It's a goat.

Ringabel's still trying to compete with Tiz when his own areas of expertise are elsewhere. Edea'd probably love to talk fashion or swordplay, for example, and Ringabel would be far better with those topics than Tiz (or Agnès).

The city of Florem seems improved. The focus on beauty is no longer to the creepily obsessive extreme DeRosa's drugs induced.

At least, not for most residents. Kid you're like ten, chill

We know in this world, Einheria rebelled against DeRosa to save Mephilia. It appears the Bloodrose Legion became largely defunct before our arrival. DeRosa's nowhere to be seen.

With no immediate threat in the area, the party decides to enjoy themselves and have some local cuisine.

Yes, I can eat meat now, just not too much.

When we first met, you couldn't eat fish, let alone meat.

That is true.

When was it that you first started to eat fish and meat?

It wasn't the first world. She still couldn't eat it then.

Perhaps it was from the third world?

Ha ha ha... In truth, it was since the first world.

Really!? When, when!?

It was what Ringabel said on our way from Florem to Eisenberg.

What did he say?

Some time after we left Grandship, our provisions started to grow low, and--

Yes, I remember all that! What an awful experience.

We all dangled lines and hooks overboard all day long.

Yet we barely caught a thing.

And even when we did, Agnès couldn't eat it, anyway.

We couldn't even harvest seaweed because we were so far out to sea.

Remember that one night where we split that little herring we caught amongst ourselves?

At that time, partially because of what had happened to Olivia, I had closed my heart to you all...

I will never forget this.

I did not eat a bite of the grilled Eisen flounder that you had prepared for me, Tiz. That is when Ringabel said to me...

"Agnès, who do you thank when food is put on the table?"

And he scolded me, saying it was rude to not eat what Tiz had made for me. That was the first time I thought of it that way, but even more surprising was what Ringabel said next.

......

"The word 'thanks' is not only for Tiz, who prepared your meal. It's also for the life that was sacrificed so that you could eat."

That was quite a shock to me--saying "thank you" for a life taken. I had always avoided eating meat and fish because I associated it with taking a life. But Ringabel opened my eyes.

Everything I consumed, whether grain, vegetable, even tea, was once alive.

But if I were to say my thanks to all life that had to be sacrificed so that I could eat and live...

Then there's no reason you can't eat meat and fish?

Yes, exactly.

That's not at all like Ringabel to say something as profound as that.

I learned that from the grand marshal.

You were there, too, Edea. You must have heard what he said.

Really? Wait... Oh!

Maybe I remember? Err...

Speaking to the Matriarch gives the same conversations as last chapter: Olivia is alive, but in hiding.

No Olivia, Mephilia is free... But there is one side quest marker in Florem:

At the very end of Florem Gardens, Mephilia's old station, the party spots three distant figures.

Eternians! Victoria and Kikyo the ninja, judging by the looks of it. Those two alone could be a potent force.

We'd better find out what evil plot they're up to before it's too late!

...:stare:

And this is the turnout? What ails the girls of Eternia these days? What happened to girl power!? Surely you agree, Artemia?

Zzzzzz...

......

That sickly sweet fame-seeker so eager to do anything for attention... And that arrogant old bag who thinks her curves will last out the years...

Bah! A fine pair of fools, the both of them! Wouldn't you say, Kikyo?

.....................

...Bwuh!? ............

......

Artemia, I like what your sister Einheria has been doing with that classical, relaxed look.

This conversation between a feral girl, a mentally broken mass murderer, and a silent assassin is going about as smoothly as you'd hope.

Ah, disagreements on what consitutes girl power vs. man power. Just the battle we came looking for.

......

.....................

...Anyone want some candy?

.........

Good! Sweet! This girl power!

Y-yes! Yes it is!

Artemia admire your girl power! Artemia give Victoria this!

Ooh! Is this--! It is! A frosti charm bracelet! And it's the Eternian limited edition! I can really have it?

This is the first time in the game Victoria's sounded genuinely happy.

:allears:

Really!? You're the one who makes these?

Artemia all alone as child. Raised by frosti. So Artemia know what frosti look like. Artemia even make frosti with eyes closed.

Oh... Th-that's girl power!

Girl power! Artemia give to Kikyo, too.

Ohh, what a chatterbox you are!

Good trick! Good lung capacity! Great fluency!

Isn't it great when socially awkward individuals connect with each other? These three are the closest we'll get to witnessing Luxendarc's version of a conversation on the Something Awful forums.

Beginning to suspect 'girl power' is just whatever they find neat at the moment, but at least they aren't being angry, tortured souls going insane and committing war crimes.

Unfortunately, just then, the party arrives.

......!!

.....................!

What have we here? Uninvited guests? Pitiful fools, jealous of our girl power! Grind them to dust, ladies!

Good job ruining the moment.

Artemia still puts out a ton of damage, and as usual, Victoria will kill you if you don't have poison immunity.

All power no finesse does describe the party pretty well.

You're right! Let's quit this place before the barbarians begin to rub off on us!

.........

The three gracefully run off.

Really, authentically angry.

...Eh heh heh...

As the party sets off for the first crystal, Edea and Agnès vow to form their own brand of girl power.

There are no new scenes connected to the crystals this chapter.

The party does gather to chat afterwards, however.

You seem to be getting quite used to this, Agnès.

Well, practice makes perfect, does it not? And I have had lots of practice by now...

But are you alright? You look so tired every time.

I shall be fine, for I feel that I have finally begun to grasp the knack for this rite.

The knack, huh? If only we could say the same of those monsters that possess the crystals...

I can't help thinking they're getting more powerful each time.

You, too, Ringabel? I was thinking the same thing.

We've battled them again and again, learning their habits and tendencies, but each time it's more difficult than the last.

Glad it's not only me, Edea. How about you, Tiz?

Shhh! Looks like Agnès fell asleep.

Ha ha, you're right.

Let's let her get a little sleep.

Yes, she needs some rest.

After Agnès's nap, the party packs up and heads to the next continent: Eisenberg.

On the way, Edea tells the others about the Venus sisters. (This is accessible after doing the Girl Power fight.)

D's Journal: The Sisters' Tale posted:

I heard the strangest thing from Edea. About how Artemia came to be raised by frostis. How her sisters came to let it happen. Really, each of those three sisters is a piece of work in her own right...

Edea was fourteen at the time. That makes Einheria twenty-four, Mephilia twenty, and Artemia a scant thirteen years old.

They met deep in the woods at Eternia's west. One rare day when the templar was free from work, the family set out for a picnic. After disappearing for a short while, Edea returned to her parents sobbing, face covered in cuts and scratches. Her half-panicked father asked what had happened, but she merely pointed to the woods as she cried.

Joined by the Dark Knight Alternis Dim, the templar strode into the forest, face set in fury. There, he found a single beast--no, on closer inspection, a young girl--lying on her back, knocked flat by Edea. Clothed in tatters and growling like an animal, she lacked the strength to stand. More than her injuries, it was hunger that ailed her.

The templar took her in his arms and carried her back to his family. She took the food he offered like a feral beast, and passed out as soon as her belly was full. They later learned her name was Artemia--the same as Einheria's younger sister, gone missing the last year. The templar and his wife exchanged grave nods.

The story jumps back one year... Edea had by that point completed three years' intensive training under Swordmaster Kamiizumi's tutelage, having begun at the age of eleven in accordance with custom. As the leader of a division of the Eternian Forces, Kamiizumi was often unable to leave Central Command, leaving his head pupil, Einheria, to run the dojo in his absence.

One day, a traveling swordsman drifted through, and Einheria met his challenge. When no victor had emerged by the day's end, each acknowledged the other's skill and found in them a kindred spirit. "I'll be joining him for three days' training," she said to Edea the next day. "See this letter gets to Mephilia." In truth, her journey would span an entire year.

Mephilia had been lauded as a genius since childhood. All who witnessed her skill in magic expected her to lead the duchy forward in the years to come. One day, a minor incident erupted at the academy. The students preparing to face their final examination were thoroughly bested by the far younger Mephilia, and in their dejection all declined to take the test.

The panicked professors decided instead to send Mephilia to the Yulyana Woods to take the test in their place. "I know it's sudden," read the letter she addressed to Einheria, "but I'll be leaving the country for three days. I would appreciate if you would see to Artemia in my absence." She was aboard an airship to Yulyana within the hour.

Just as expected, Mephilia passed the test in one go. Less expected, however, was her meeting with a certain playboy in a port town on her journey home. She went with him, witnesses claim, and was missing for a full year. It seems she sailed the world with him those months, ultimately returning to Eternia aboard a ship called the Funky Francisca...

Left at home alone, Artemia could only tremble in hunger as she awaited her sisters' return. On the fourth night, Eternia saw its first snow of the year, and beyond her window, Artemia saw the smiling faces of frostis dancing through the air. Lured outside, she, too, would not see home for another year. Instead of her sisters, it was that pack of creatures who would raise her.

When the templar found her, Artemia still bore two letters, badly worn but still sealed. One bore Einheria's name, addressed to Mephilia. The other was from Mephilia, destined for Einheria.

He opened the letters and read their contents, then took the girl straight to Kamiizumi's dojo. He arrived just after Einheria, finally back from her year's training, who in turn had just witnessed Mephilia's return from a year's wandering (and with a man in tow!). The two were locked in a furious argument.

In the year that followed, Einheria mastered the spear, and succeeded in scaring off her sister's playboy paramour. Mephilia, for her part, also honed her skills, and Artemia cultivated her already uncanny hunting prowess. At the age of fifteen, the little ranger would join her sisters in their post to Florem.

Quite the family, I must say.

Real cases of feral children normally involve isolation starting around ages 0-4, and the isolation is usually significantly longer than a year. As a pre-teen only away from humans for one year, Artemia shouldn't have become anywhere near feral. Plus, she should have been old enough to seek help and people instead of somehow living outside on scraps in below freezing weather. One way Artemia's scenario makes sense is if she had a preexisting mental disability, another is that even before she ran away she led an isolated, unhappy life. Her subsequent admission to the military is just the grimly bitter cherry on top.

Bringing a dose of realism to Braev's duchy doesn't do it any favors.

This world's Grandship is similar to the last one except for a rumor of the ghost ship.

Wait. The ghost ship is operated by Barbarossa. We already fought him, so what's there for us?

Yes, Edea, just like the other handful of times we've been here. The more worlds and side quests you do, the less some of the later cutscenes make sense.

Alive, dead, Barbarossa doesn't care. He's content to chill with his bros.

Suleiman's ghost is here again, too.

Thank you for bringing me word. For the first time in a long while, I feel I'll find rest in sleep...

Suleiman was described as being a playboy earlier in his life, but in the end he cared deeply for Mephilia, even beyond death. This is a bittersweet ending to their story, but at least this time Mephilia and Barbarossa came out all right.

On Eisenberg's mainland, the party heads straight to the bridge to take out Eternia's top idol.

Early in the fight, an unexpected thief shows up.

Who are you?

Why's Jackal traveled all the way to another continent? He doesn't come across as a Praline fanboy...

Once either of the two is brought down, Jackal skedaddles and drags Praline with him.

They run behind the Swordbearer line, leaving the party behind.

You have some nerve, interrupting my performance like that!

Shut your trap. No one talks to the Jackal like that.

The who?

The Jackal, I said! Great thief of the sands! And you can add asterisk holder and grunt in the Eternian Forces to the list, what's more.

It's unusual to see two branches of the Eternian Forces meet out in the field. Given the competence of the Eternian divisions, I'm sure this will go smoothly.

Did you come on orders from Swordmaster Kamiizumi, then?

Come again? Swordmaster who?

Swordmaster Kamiizumi! You mean you've never heard of him? He's super tall and wields a mean sword. And he's always in a long green robe.

(A swordsman in a green robe? ...! She must mean the chief! He did say he had some pressing business and wanted me to handle that thing for Old Man Tick-Tock, so...)

Oh, right, that order, heh heh.

Well, great, then! After you, Mr. Jackal! Lead the way!

Jackal is mixing up Black Blades leader Kamiizumi with his own 'chief', Khint the spell blade mercenary/Ex-Eternian commander. This can be easy to miss, since Khint's robe is such a dark green it looks black.

Jackal and Praline take off in an airship heading to Ancheim, abandoning the Swordbearers at Eisen Bridge and allowing the Black Blades and Swordbearers to be overrun by the superior numbers of the Shieldbearer forces. With nothing left to do in the civil war, the party follows the thief and idol.

Ancheim, like Florem, appears to be in decent shape. Part of that is due to Profiteur apparently not being here.

Praline and Jackal came to see the King. The party can sneak in the normal back way if they want, but they just end up dumped back inside the front entrance.

As unorthodox as it is, I recommend using the front door, which is now open both day and night due to Praline and Jackal barging in.

Says the person wearing frills and bunny ears.

That would be Old Man Tick-Tock. And he's the reason the chief asked me to bring you here.

By chief, you mean the swordmaster?

Yeah, that's the one.

Ahem! This is Praline a la Mode, so-called Diva of the Battlefield, then?

"Tick-Tock"!? It's you who ought to mind his tongue, urchin! I am King of Ancheim and honorable consul to the Khamer & Profiteur Merchantry!

Feh, king? What's so grand about a king? Your parents were less louts than mine, that's all.

What's so--!? I am king, boy! Kings command respect and adulation by virtue of being king! Are you truly so crassly ignorant!?

So what, you think you're better than the chief?

Sure we killed Jackal a couple times, but you know, this kid makes some good points when he's not being driven mad.

Says the thief with the lock ornament on the back of his hoodie.

The royal raiment is not "weird"! I'll have you know this is the very latest in fashion!

Excuse me, Mr. Jackal. Where will I be performing?

Why, yes! Yes, of course! You've quite the reputation, Ms. Diva. I trust the rumors do not exaggerate your talents.

I have deigned to introduce your melodious voice and dancing to the people of Ancheim.

In case you thought maybe this branch of the Eternian Forces had a good reason for ruining the Eisenberg campaign: No. They didn't.

Khamer's just a doofus.

In recompense for their long years of labor, I would have them forget their hardship, if only for a moment.

Uhh, why? We're the Khamer & Profiteur Merchantry, remember? We squeeze the people dry, then keep 'em in line by flashing the duchy's power at 'em!

Er, I-I have no idea what you mean!

What, really? The swordmaster really wants us to do that?

Oh, absolutely. Heard it straight from the chief's mouth.

...Well, alright, then. I can't say I really like this, but I'm a professional, so...

Stop right there! I heard every last word!

Praline's hands are relatively clean for a member of the Forces, despite the Black Blades' own dirty work. She didn't participate in the child slavery, assassinations, or Qada stuff.

Khamer and Praline do have something in common: an idealistic obliviousness that keeps them from seeing the extent of the damage they're doing.

That's not what I said at all!

Hah, you again!? Come on, Tick-Tock, you get to help this time! Let's get 'em, and get 'em good!

Ooh, that's my cue!

You know, the party probably doesn't need to stop the Eternians.

Khamer accidently sabotaging the Black Blades, the supposed commander of the Bloodrose Legion missing, a chain of command outsourcing to a murderer-for-hire...

These guys are self-defeating.

Following the battle, Khamer is arrested and replaced by the Harena family line once again. Praline and Jackal escape, soon separating due to creative differences...

Another word for fingers and toes. Why do you ask?

Jackal, kid...

That's...awfully macabre.

Right!?

Let's just...

Let's just move on to the second crystal.

Every world, we kill fewer Eternians. Every world, they're arguably less insane and evil. If we're still doing this a few worlds from now, their campaigns will comprise of sending tasteful gift baskets to other countries.

What about DeRosa, Profiteur, and Qada? They're still missing, and the few hints we've gotten point to them being as terrible as they've always been.

There's no guarantee we'll even meet them in this world. Once we awaken the other crystals, we're probably out of here...

Are you alright, Agnès?

Yes...I am fine. Just a bit weary.

I'm afraid you won't last much longer if you keep going on like this.

He's right. Perhaps you should pace yourself a bit.

No, the crystals must be awakened with the utmost haste.

For only then shall we dispel the darkness, close the Great Chasm, and render aid to Tiz.

Agnès...

But what harm would there be in getting a little rest?

Huh...? But we have to awaken the crystals, then enter the Holy Pillar before--

You're right, Edea. Agnès's well-being is our chief concern right now.

I'm worried about her, too, you know!

I mean, she's a vestal of the crystals and I'm a cryst-fairy, so of course I'm concerned!

Airy, we're just worried about Agnès right now...

Not vestals or fairies or whatever! Now, time to get some rest. Okay?

Tiz...

The leader speaks. I suppose we must follow.

Tiz? Our leader? When did that happen?

When doesn't matter. Are you opposed, Edea?

Nah, I'm all for it! Let's rest up.

Partway through their rest, Edea's lunch is interrupted by an arrow aimed for her head. She dodges out of the way just in time, chasing after the source. She's just quick enough to see a small person with a familiar furry purple tail bounding out of the temple.

Artemia is long gone by the time they check outside, but there's a letter attached to her arrow. It's addressed from Einheria, asking the party to come to Eternia City.

This version of Einheria is likely more on our side than not. No sense keeping her waiting.

Nothing new and no sign of Einheria right away, but look! Khint's kid is feeling well enough to be outside the medical center.

And over in the east corner of town square...

......

Ha ha ha ha ha!

......

...Einheria? You've changed. I suppose fifteen years is a lifetime, at your age.

Yet you've changed more than I, Commander. Those robes...

Heh. I am no commander, least not now. I... Much has happened since last we met.

...Ow-ow-ow.

I'm fine! Thank you, Mr. Stranger! Where are you from?

I come from a faraway... Hm? Do I look so unusual?

No. There's this man who sends money for my treatments from someplace real far away.

......

...You don't say? Well, run along now.

Alright! Bye, Mr. Stranger!

The girl runs off.

...No...

You...you defended her by defending this city.

Who, me?

Yes. As commander. And I, as a new trainee. We also had a medic-in-training in... Ah!

Another familiar figure walks up.

Now we know why she wasn't with Bahamut and company.

Einheria. And...is that you, Commander?

It's been some time, Holly.

What brings you here? I had heard you'd been sent to Caldisla.

Oh, Victor called me back, so...

Victor!? Holly, are you and he still--

That is a pretty big intellectual leap for boyfriends...

But Barras's enthusiasm is probably a welcome relief from Victor's constant guilty sadsack state. Not to mention the whole madly obsessed with Victoria thing.

He said he needed me for an experiment involving white magic waves or some such.

Oh. I'd just assumed...

Enough about me. What's your excuse? You and your sisters were sent to Florem, last I heard.

Oh, I nearly forgot! I have a message I must convey to the Lord Marshal!

To the templar?

Einheria!

Edea charges over to the group.

...Edea pauses to catch her breath. Good thing these guys appear to be not hostile!

Hey! We can debate my punctuality later! Listen! Tell your fool sister to stop aiming for the forehead when delivering messages by arrow!

Oh, yeah... Sorry about that.

Well, what do you want? And be quick about it. This is hostile territory for me, so...

Ahh, yes. But before we get to that, I have a little test of skill for you.

A what?

Commander Khint, Holly. I would like to see if she has what it takes. Perhaps you might lend me a hand?

I suppose.

I can't say I follow, but it sounds entertaining enough.

In case you're wondering how the whole message by arrow thing played out in game: it didn't. I made up that scene in the temple. The Artemia arrow bit happened completely offscreen. All you get is the mention of it in this scene.

Almost every scene in this chapter has a disconnect between what the party experiences and what the player experiences. We're privy to conversations before the party arrives and the party has significant events without the player knowing, evidenced through party chats and other references to events we never saw firsthand. This is a common storytelling technique, but usually its use is consistent throughout a story, rather than noticeably increasing, as it is in this game.

This increasing disconnect results in an unusual feeling: It makes the player feel separated from the party, as though they thought they were a party member privy to all the private moments, but are now realizing they're just an outsider looking in occasionally on what the party or the Eternians are up to. Was this feeling intended by the devs? That's open to interpretation...

One downside to it right now is we're missing out on what sounds like fun character bits in a game where the story relies heavily on the characters, to the extent that the main reward for pursuing most optional content is character moments.

Edea, I would ask a favor, now that you've proven you are up to the task.

Go on.

I've recently come upon some shocking information. Three conspirators plotting to overthrow the duchy are set to gather in secret correspondence in the coming days.

Why are you telling this to me? You can take care of it yourself, Einheria!

One of these villains is a superior of mine. And fifteen years ago, the other two--

What? Are you certain!?

Three terrible Eternians, one of whom is Einheria's superior, the other two with a connection to Khint... Hmm...

Ha hah ha, no, really?

Ironically, one in your position may have more freedom to act than any of us, given the circumstances. The commander and I make for the Lord Marshal. I ask that you pluck these vipers' fangs.

Consider them plucked! Whatever their reasons, conspiracy and lies are a coward's tools.

Then the task is yours.

Right, then. I should go and pass word of all this along to Victor.

Looks like we've got one satisfying battle ahead of us. We'll take down the terrible trio...

Along with the rest of the Eternian Forces who stand in the way. But Einheria doesn't have to know that. :ssh:

In the fourth world, it appeared the water vestal Olivia had gone to ground somewehre in Florem, and had not been heard from.

D's Journal: Victoria the Arcanist posted:

In the fourth world, we encountered Victoria, Artemia, and Kikyo in the Florem Gardens. They were holding some kind of meeting, chatting on about girl power or something. They engaged us in battle, and when we defeated them, they hurled abuse at us as they withdrew. They left behind candy wrappers, a charm bracelet, and banners covered with scrawls.

D's Journal: Artemia the Ranger posted:

In the fourth world, we happened upon a meeting of three duchy women in Florem Gardens. Though none of them would normally be the type to value communication, they seemed attuned to one [an]other, and fought with great coordination. After defeating them, Artemia's parting words were, "They no have girl power!" This did not sit well with our female companions.

After Artemia left, we found a finely-crafted charm bracelet on the ground. This is apparently a very rare item, and Agnès's eyes lit up. Then Edea remembered that Artemia was raised by frostis as a child. I did not know what to say to that...

D's Journal: Konoe the Ninja posted:

In the fourth world, we saw the ninja Kikyo at Florem Gardens. She had been invited by Victoria, and Artemia was there, too. None of them excelled at communication, but when we encountered them they performed with admirable unity. A banner left behind after they withdrew had "girl power" scrawled on it in faint writing.

D's Journal: Jackal the Thief posted:

In the fourth world, we found the Jackal in the royal palace in Ancheim, after he had taken Praline from the battle at Eisen Bridge. We put an end to their conspiracy.

D's Journal: Time Mage Khamer posted:

In the fourth world, we met King Khamer together with the Jackal and Praline at the palace in Ancheim. The Jackal spoke gleefully of the king's plot to exploit the people through Praline's song, though the king denied this with a flustered look. We defeated them, and both Praline and the Jackal absconded, leaving Khamer sitting on his throne, a shell of a man.

D's Journal: Praline, Diva of the Battlefield posted:

In the fourth world, Praline went missing from Eisen Bridge. Despite confusion between the Jackal and Praline, mixing up the swordmaster and Ciggma Khint--both expert swordsmen, tall and clad in gree--they somehow arrived in Ancheim to fulfill Khamer's request to ease the people's suffering. The Jackal and Praline's performance left the king in tears...

D's Journal: Holly the White Mage posted:

In the fourth world, we saw the white mage Holly in the city of Eternia for the first time. The valkyrie Einheria had planned a skirmish to test our mettle, and Holly joined the fray. After the battle, Einheria warned us of a terrible conspiracy. Holly said she would pass the information on to Victor, then left.

D's Journal: Spell Fencer Khint posted:

In the fourth world, we were summoned by the valkyrie Einheria, and dragged into a battle with the spell fencer Khint and the white mage Holly, who happened to be there. Evading their relentless assaults, we came out on top. Einheria then told us of a certain conspiracy, at which point Khint seemed to remember something, and a frown came over his face.

D's Journal: Einheria the Valkyrie posted:

In the fourth world, we were called to the city of Eternia by the valkyrie Einheria via a message sent by arrow. The spell fencer Khint and the white mage Holly also happened to be there, and Einheria made them join her in a battle to test our abilities. After the fight, she apparently deemed us worthy, and asked us to stop a plot taking place in the duchy.

She’s just got the most extreme kind of phoning it in in all of existence. She’s probably seen thousands, if not millions, of iterations of the party by this point, and who even knows how much (or little) variation they had?

I don't know what to think about this game as it continues. I'm half-expecting that the final world's going to be a 'This was the real world all along' sort of reveal, with the party gradually getting closer to reality with every world they destroy with the ritual, and the hosed-up nature of the world they originally came from being that it was distorted echoes of reality. With, of course, Ouroboros' goal being to consume the "real" world. Or maybe the reverse, with the more worlds they destroy the more hosed up the world gets from the way it's supposed to be, and Ouroboros being a manifestation of the distortions coming to claim the most hosed-up version of reality as its own.

Or maybe I'm just overthinking it.

The multiple worlds setup means this absolutely is Xenogears' Chair Zone, but they can recycle what they have to hide it.
Although I guess FF8 didn't steal Bravely's lunch money so there's that difference.

To be fair though, "phone in the last couple(?) worlds events" is far less mismanagement than "phone in the last disc including at least two major dungeons and the final boss"

That'd be in reference to Xenogears actually! Once you get to the actual end of Xenogears, a few sidequests open up. One gives you access to the best shop in the game and a plot event that alters Emeralda's character model, which also gives her perfect stat growth on level up.

This is more useful than it seems, because it ALSO gives her a hidden amplifier to her attack power, and unlike her stats (which are mostly useless at this stage because combat has become overwhelmingly Gear-oriented) this applies to Crescens as well.

In many ways, this iteration frustrated me more than the previous ones.

Even Team Crystal had to FINALLY figure out what to say and not say for each situation by this time. They finally had to realize that yes, time is repeating and not to confuse them with previous timelines.

So armed with this knowledge....the situation cleared up on its own without them.

Playing through feels very similar to Xenogears. I was almost going to mention chair void in the update. The first four worlds have all these character moments scripted out and seen by the player, and then in the latter half we just hear about things after the fact, over and over. You can argue part of it is a consequence of having the world open up, but the problems go beyond that. Xenogears even has a step up on Bravely Default because it doesn't waste as much of your time having you backtrack through old dungeons and zip back and forth across the world.

At least not that I remember. I only played Xenogears once and it was years ago. But boy, I'll never forget that drat chair.

Entry 102 Part 1: A Very Lee Family Reunion (sans mother Mahzer)

Our campaign in this world has finally reached Eternia, where we learned of an evil plot to undermine the Duchy.

But first, let's go find more members of the Duchy to beat up.

Remember this place? I do. Endless paintings, scrawls upon the posts, political games spanning millennia...

I'm here for the side quest marker, not the painting. Where are you hiding it? You want to fight for it? Fine!

Lo and behold, once you agree to battle, you get a new scene.

It is an honor to make your acquaintance, Archduke DeRosso.

Apparently we passed by Victor while we were charging to the top floor. Holly's probably far behind, too; at this rate she probably won't arrive until long after we leave.

Victor gives his title to DeRosso here despite both of them being on the Council of Six. It'd be funny if most of the Council of Six members assumed it was just a cool sounding organization name Braev came up with instead of, you know, referring to the number of people in it.

Ahh, the child prodigy. I believe we've met once before, though you may not recall it.

So, what brings the brilliant young scholar whose findings saw Eternia become a land of life everlasting here?

What a sentence. Also, DeRosso really will take any opportunity to exposit.

It's all too easy to imagine this as an underhanded snipe from the Bravely Default writers towards the Bravely Default artists.

Just what is it you want, Mr. Court?

I...

The life I have dedicated my own to saving will soon be snuffed out. I have tried the latest in medical technology, pioneered by my father and my own research. A forbidden art concealed by the Orthodoxy.

In their quest to save Victoria, Victor and his father tried the latest techniques and some of the oldest: the forbidden art is alchemical genesis, learned from an 'ancient book' confiscated by the Orthodoxy.

This newer medical technique had the side effect of creating the greatest medical facility in the world, where Edea's mother, Mahzer, is being treated.

And yet... And yet...!

I even exhumed the vampire's crypt buried deep beneath the head temple.

Did you, now?

More than feel disappointed, I had to laugh at the crass handiwork I found within. The remains were a motley mix of bones so jumbled I couldn't begin to say which beasts they were taken from.

At the time, I dismissed the stories for a farce at the end of a senseless struggle for political power. But the paintings I saw while on the way up here have convinced me anew.

It would've been nice to get some buildup to DeRosso before we met him. Edea at least, maybe Agnès, should've grown up hearing about the legendary vampire, lord of darkness or whatever he called himself, who took on the Orthodoxy only to be barely beaten back by the forces of light.

As is, we never learn DeRosso's reputation until after we've chatted with him a bit, which takes away some of the awe.

...And if I were? What then, good doctor?

I would humbly ask for a sample of that immortal body.

Would you graft tissue grown from my flesh into her? Or perhaps create a new life altogether? I find you as frightening as you are pitiable.

......

I am not unwilling to offer you a part of me to further your work. But I would first have you show me the true depths of your despair.

Wait, this wasn't part of the deal.

Guess the party's just openly regarded as killing machines constantly ready to fight now.

Not that they're wrong.

The party is forced to strike at their kneecaps, but wins nevertheless.

No need, I can see it from here and -- oh look, it's the same as the past three times.

HE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE

...But so be it. Here is what you sought. I doubt there has ever been a man who sought the secret of life so doggedly while so dogged by despair.

Consider this my gift to a man ever on the edge of hopelessness, whiling away his years in fruitless study.

DeRosso, you nerd, the Orthodoxy's fallen. Just get out of the house more. Borrow an airship from Braev and go see the world.

I am eternally grateful, my lord.

The nature of my immortality is...for lack of a better word, occult.

I know not what secrets your modern medicine can tease from this lock of hair, but you are welcome to try.

......

Ah... One further thing. Should my gift prove the seed for some new life...

I would ask you name the child Lilia.

Lilia, my lord?

Lilia DeRosso... It was my mother's name.

......

May your work prove fruitful, Victor.

The Lilia plot does come up again, but not in this game. So far as Bravely Default is concerned, this plot ends here.

No.

The party heads off to cheerier places, like Gravemark Village.

How's it going guys? More graves? Okay.

All that's left for sidequests is Central Command.

We're saving the best for last.

And came a woman grown. You look nothing like the child I sent off to Caldisla.

Father...

You've flown far since leaving my side, guided by beliefs that are entirely your own. Proud is the father who sees his daughter grow so. And yet... No, the time for such words is past.

Despite leading a revolution in his youth, this version of Braev's now fallen into the 'Don't let politics get in way of family' camp.

Wait do you mean
Which
He's right there--

Nevermind. Another Alternis comes out from behind a chair and bows.

Lord Marshal.

You insist on defending me despite my wishes. Are you my son or a thorn in my side?

Your Lordship... You...you would call me your son?

......

You've need to ask, after all these years? Help the boy, Edea.

That's right, after all these years...

Edea's undoubtedly speaking to both Alternis and Ringabel here. You could still argue the whole 'didn't recognize him with the mask off' joke...

But it's become more obvious with each world that this is a Superman vs. Clark Kent scenario. There are several clips, especially from Christopher Reeve's depiction, showing how greatly posture, demeanor, voice can change how a person is perceived (here's one sample). Similarly, Ringabel is on the opposite end of personality from Alternis, being the goofy fop to Alternis's stoic perfect soldier.

Now, let us begin. My sacred sword, Alternis's blade of darkness... The contrast between black and white compliments each other too well, my dear daughter!!

Anyway, this time we're fighting Braev and Alternis in the name of...aesthetic?

Our version didn't eat his vitamins.

Early in the fight, a certain swordsman comes in tardy, presumably so he could skip the pre-battle speech.

You seem to be enjoying yourselves.

Master!?

Nobutsuna. It's been too long.

Is this a serious battle? Is Braev angry at us about the whole crystal thing or what?

Oh. I guess this is just normal for the Lee family. It does fit with the backstory for Braev and Kamiizumi dueling over Mahzer.

...Might I join in the fun, Braev?

Heh heh, as you like. You're family as much as any other.

You honor me.

Well, Edea? May I?

Yes, please, Master!

Not for long!

Getting a bunch of legendary swords like this is probably nothing new for Edea.

It seems safe to assume Christmas (or Luxendarc's equivalent) with the Lee family regularly involves beating people up for expensive presents.

I'm your and mother's daughter... Alternis's family, and Master Kamiizumi's disciple. A sister disciple to Einheria and comrade of the wind vestal.

I've learned so much from so many people. Their lessons have brought me so far.

We've disagreed at times. Even fought. But all those conflicting views are a part of me. They make me who I am. That's why--

No, you need say no more. Walk upon your own path, child. Do that, and you shall... You'll find the way.

I will, Father. I promise.

Lady Vestal, Tiz, and Ringabel, my son from another world. I place my daughter and the fate of our world in your hands.

You can count on us.

Good to have confirmation that Braev does recognize Ringabel and also knows about the multiverse.

Kamiizumi doesn't care for post-battle speeches either, so he snuck out early.

Alternis catches up to him just before he wanders out into a preferable blizzard.

Swordmaster! Where are you going?

The way of the sword runs far and deep, as do the journeys on which it takes me.

Please, wait! I have a favor to ask of you. Will you hear it?

A favor? From you?

Seeing your fearsome skill firsthand has shown me just how much I've yet to learn. Should an assassin of your caliber ever strike at the Lord Marshal, I would be powerless...

I desire the strength to defend His Lordship from any who would bring him harm.

Quick, man, think up an excuse so you can leave.

Uh...

You're stronger than you think. A man defending what he holds dear is far more formidable than one who seeks to take it.

You already have the strength you seek. If I came upon Braev with a sword drawn, it would be a fierce fight with you at his side.

Master...

Unless it's to take from the Wind Vestal or the Shieldbearer soldiers or their orphans, but you know, greater good and all that? Maybe?

If you'll excuse me... Farewell!

Kamiizumi exits before Alternis can think up more excuses.

Much needed vacation time, here we come!

Thank you, swordmaster. You words will be forever etched in my mind!

And we're done with Eternians. Got all of 'em. Yep.

Next: One last fight worth counting and the end of Chapter 7.
