Cacati in mano e pigliati a schiaffi!

I saw some of your stuff on instagram. Cool concept!

Echoing the space rule. It's like breathing room and you only want to break it on occasion when it works.

It looks like you missed focus on a few shots or are at a shutter speed that is allowing some movement but not enough to freeze it. What were your settings? I could be wrong though.

Shooting into the sun is also super hard, your camera is fighting you. Our eyes are attracted to the brightest object first, and the sun is really distracting in that photo. You could crop it out or expose differently.

Dont forget to get low. You shoot at eye level for the "I Eat rear end" photo and closer up and level to it would have given it a lot more character.

Also, please dont take the above as me making GBS threads on your photos. I am definitely not. I liked the ones you posted, and the ones you didnt (like the man in red). Ive never shot racing events, but those are a few basic things that should help.

Hardest part about sports is being prepared and predicting where the action is gonna be.

Races are easy to predict, they all move in the same direction.

Slow shutters are obligatory, looking up panning photography. It is The Way(tm) to shoot motorsports. You can really only pick a shutter that freezes action if they're coming straight at you.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. My main reason for not giving panning a serious go was that it was a really bright day and I was kind of intimidated by the shutter slowness required, it kinda felt counter intuitive. I'm regretting not fiddling more with it, I'll try it more seriously when I'm given the next chance.

Focusing was set manual, so all in all I'm pretty happy with how many shots turned out well. I know I lost focus on some, but in some cases I thought that the subject was interesting/fun enough to keep them.

Shooting into the sun.. Yeah, that was definitely a bad idea. By that time it was afternoon and I was getting pretty tired so I didn't really pay much attention.

I was in the crowd, front row, not on the track itself, so I couldn't really get low. That being said, I admit I didn't even think about it! Which is a shame really because I didn't need credentials to get on the track, as long as I stayed behind the bales. I'm worried that I'd be getting in the pro photographers' way though.

Lastly, I'm having way too much fun to take criticism harshly, so don't worry about making GBS threads on me :) I have been catching up with this thread for the last few weeks and it's pretty amazing how much you've improved and I was genuinely excited when you got your first paid gig

Personally I find The Way to be kinda overrated, but I'm going to blame my amateurness and admit that, as with most techniques, it's tricky to get Right, but once you do it's worth it. In this case I don't really mind the background being clear as I feel it gives some context, but it goes without saying I'll be experimenting more with it until I get it.

There are a bunch of reasons why panning is The Way, and not just because it's a popular fad amongst photographers. One thing that's really hard to capture otherwise is a feeling of movement, the impression of speed. If you take a shot with a very fast shutterspeed, you freeze the action obviously, but you also lose the clues that tell us something is happening. Without blur on wheels or background, the bike might as well just be parked in the middle of the track. This goes for pretty much any kind of moving target by the way - motor racing, airshows, athletics, even your dog zipping around in the park. Panning is super easy to practice, you don't need to wait for raceday, you can practice on your kids/pets, cars on the street outside or whatever. If you can keep something in the same part of the frame consistently at about 1/125s, you'll see a big improvement in your photos.

If you're dead set against panning, there are other ways to do motorsports. As I said previously, head on (or rear) shots work well with a fast shutter. My rule of thumb is if you can't see the wheel spokes, it's okay to freeze the action. Bikes are a better subject too, as they are more expressive in a corner so it still gives a feeling of action.

Past that, wander the paddock and take candids of teams working on their vehicle. There's some good shots to be had there.

Oh no, I'm not against panning at all, sorry if I came across snooty. I'm just saying that a non-panned photo of a moving thing can still feel dramatic or interesting. At the end of the day, panning is an "effect" and while it obviously has its merits and can look incredible, I feel it's not necessarily always the best option. Though I may be just saying that because I can't pan, yet.

You can crop in a bit tighter on almost all of those, especially the 2nd, and shooting vertically may help a bit as well, since the action is almost always going to be right on top of you. The dunk shot is great

I totally get the crop. I am glad you said something because I was really struggling with it. Sometimes I get those pictures where I cant find a workable aspect ratio. My bosses want a lot of horizontal stuff but Ill definitely try more vertical. They use them for web and newspaper.

Thanks for the compliment! I was super worried about the right photo from the sequence and that his leg would disappear into the background.

Dude also whiffed the second dunk. Two break aways. Whole game was wild. First half, we are losing 32-25. We came back and won 83-66 in the second.

Common misconception that; that fun is relaxing. If it is, you're not doing it right.
Do any of you have the Windows installer for Photomechanic 4.6? I have a license, but CameraBits has helpfully removed it from their website and told me to pay to upgrade to version 5, which there is no way in hell I am doing.

What an intense game this was. We opened up scoring on our first drive. Then the other team did. Again, and again. We hadn't lost a home game in over 5 years and it almost happened tonight. The score would bounce back and forth in favor of us and them constantly. Pic #6 was the game winning reception basically. 56 - 52 and we only came ahead in the last minute. Felt amazing to see my school win something to be honest.

Also, a slightly technical question. When shooting sports with back button focus on f2.8 should I aim for a players head, or can I get away with aiming at their body and still get the head in focus?

On f/2.8 you should be fine if you get the shirt/jersey in focus, plus that might be a little easier for your focus to find quicker than a head

Some poor fucker thought throwing a punch at Steve Kragthorpe, who suffers from Parkinson's, was a good idea. He followed that up by trying to throw hands with former NFL RB Kevin Faulk.

I totally understand. I was shooting different angles and experimented a bit. Someone requested (not here) I do more "atmospheric action" that game so I tried to open it up. Not sure if I did what they meant.
Thanks! I love that I get critiqued here. Im always looking to improve.

I can get wanting "atmospheric action" but the problem is most of your backgrounds show a lot of empty blue seats. That's not your fault, of course, but it's what it is.

If you want to set the scene a bit more then you may want some shots in tight of the crowd that IS there, student section, etc.

Oh my god my football team did that and it made my life hell.

Our school doesnt drive a large turn out which kinda sucks. Having empty stands is kinda demoralizing sometimes. Especially when the away section is loud as hell and silencing the few home crowd. I always want to get crowd shots but as you can see, it isnt always easy. Totally get it though. Student sections are almost empty too. Seriously, the only real turn out is when we are broadcast on ESPN.

I also just found out that I have been published in a major newspaper in my city (San Diego) quite a few times now. My school sent out my photos with press releases and apparently the newspaper used them. I am grateful they did that for me. It felt great being published by my school but a big newspaper company in a city of over 1 million is kinda surreal.

Do I add that to my resume? How?
