Jealous Cow posted:https://twitter.com/ericuman/status/1065255517507985408 I used to use a CPAP in highschool and it took me like 5 seconds to find the key combo to get into the admin menu to change the airflow settings. The thing had no way of recording or monitoring me and I received new masks and hoses in the mail every 3 months without asking. That's how this poo poo should work.

I'm just surprised that people didn't know that, because when I got a CPAP machine, my doctor explained all that to me...that it would send my usage stats using a wireless connection, that my insurance company would pay to rent the machine for a certain period of time and that I needed to meet certain compliance standards before they'd buy it, and so on. So I'm a little surprised this guy wasn't told this before when he got the machine.

So I'm a little surprised this guy wasn't told this before when he got the machine. If it was all upfront that might be argued into reasonability, but then you get to this part later in the article: quote:In September, his doctor prescribed a new mask and airflow setting for his machine. Advanced Oxy-Med Services, the medical supply company approved by his insurer, sent him a modem that he plugged into his machine, giving the company the ability to change the settings remotely if needed. So his doctor told him the CPAP needed a new part, but he can't get the part, because he stopped using the machine, because his doctor told him it needed a new part. He's now worse off than before as a direct result of doing what the doctor and medical supplier recommended and only because there was an insurance company involved. huh..... thats creepy. The HSA + high deductible insurance combo is a poo poo Republican idea that they keep pushing, and we'd all be much better off with single payer, but for those with a good job who can afford it, it can have its benefits. It worked in my favor in this case, I was able to just buy the CPAP machine and pay for the exam with years of HSA contributions (both below my crazy-high deductible so insurance never got involved). So, at least I know I don't have to worry about something that I had no idea I needed to worry about in the first place.

Do they even have investigative reporters anymore. I have bad news. On the occasions I have gone on Safari into their dens, Times magazine is not only relevant but an arbiter of collective thought among the religious Chuds. I have seen pastors cite Times magazine as insightful as to why the "culture" is corrupt. There is a digital divide in this country but not in the way that we might normally conceive of; it is a divide of what is knowable by data collection versus the fiat of established authority. Times magazine is in some places, highly relevant.

Thankfully the accessories can be bought more cheaply on various online sites (mask, tubing, headgear, etc) than through your insurance.

You're probably paying mostly for all the testing they have to do to make sure the machine doesn't fail in a way that suffocates the user. Medical device testing gets expensive fast and gosh if they kept making the same known-good models they made 10 years ago they couldn't use them to automatically spy on you and we couldn't have that.
