Take for instance a comment I saw saying that if Tony Blair hadn't supported the Iraq war "Those Iraq civilians would be dead anyway". That is a monstrous thing to think but it is the exact same line of thinking. It is saying that ultimately "we play the game in front of us and try to limit its worst excesses" instead of the more human response of "smash this loving thing".

Also, as has been proven by the GOP purity of message and intent often leads to power.

No, you are exactly as culpable, you are just exactly as culpable for more deaths. It doesn't matter if your purity crusade made you feel better, you still caused much much more misery and death by handing power over to people who gleefully do much worse things, you just did it while stroking your own ego.

And great job just devolvng to the "SMASH THING!" response. Yes, I'm sure THIS time you try that, unlike every other goddamn time in human history, it won't just magnify the problems dozens of times over.

The national party has left them swaying because the neoliberal platform they love so much has severely damaged the state and they have zero interest or plans to deal with it. Brown is popular in Ohio because he gives a poo poo and is trying to make things better there. Byrd loving annihilated everyone who tried to challenge him in WV, primarily because he rode so hard in diverting funds and jobs to the state. It's a lack of interest from the party writ large that is the problem and something that needs to be changed if you want to see more left-y people in Congress from the rust belt states.

Oh if Pelosi gets house leadership back she should absolutely be bombarded by people asking for earmarks back.

I think that when you've got the government telling you you can't do this or that, and being ridiculous with their regulations, you're allowed to be a bit of a libertarian. That plan by the US government is absolutely abhorrent. A few years back when I arrived for work at the hospital there was a small demonstration outside. Not a very usual thing for where I worked, a large teaching hospital.

It turned out they were protesting against people born with hypospadia / indeterminate genitalia being operated on after birth and assigned a sex more or less on the whim of the surgeon. This is apparently the norm for what happens to these babies. Unsurprisingly in a big proportion of cases the person grows up feeling they've been assigned the wrong one.

If lawmakers are aware this happens its incredibly morally corrupt to propose that law. Disgusting.
