So out of morbid curiosity I wanted to see both how the game ran now on my starting to get out of date PC and see just how broken it was. Had to reset my account password because the last time I logged in was for a refund two years ago and now the launcher wants me to verify I'm not a bot after entering the password I definitely just changed it to.

Punchline however is that I can't actually log into the website with the new and correct password to actually do that.

The Titanic posted:

Good post. Mirrors my opinion and that of others here I believe too. :)

My opinion is that with infinite money and infinite time they can build a whole game successfully based off of occasional lightning strike successes in their development.

However my opinion is also that the game is already a failure and can not be reversed. Yes, something great may still eventually come out, however there is nobody who has ever had to go to war over a roadmap and priorities that will claim any of this is even remotely successful.

It's an enormous failure. :)

The only major difference between this failure and most failures is that the people leading this are using it to milk money for development, rather than anticipate a cash out for sales.

This is an important fact that is talked about, but hast come up in a while, so let me rehash. :)

The people making Star Citizen have now raked in over $200M for a bunch of pretty art assets and promises, on a platform that is effectively a hacked up CryEngine mod. It's a fantastic mod, but it's busting at the seams.

This is important because it means development is super slow, super buggy, and a lot of things will not run very good. As we are experiencing currently. This isn't like this is a brand new event in software development. Everybody in development has, at some point, had to struggle with "the beast", which is that massive, super critical piece of software so ingrained in everything and so patchwork that extending it and adding functionality is a stress inducing nightmare. Launching a patch has people sitting there sweating and waiting for problem calls or emails to start rolling in, and somebody already has the command to roll the last merge back already typed into the console.

However it has taken decades of programmers to get to this point as well, across many people who aren't even at the company anymore. Questions can't be answered, and everything needs to be figured out.

This mess is Star Citizen now. It's an 8-year long project of super under-skilled programmers. The codebase is hosed up because the people leading it have no idea what modern software development means and how to approach things.

So back to the original point, about being paid to develop the game... :)

All of this is super critical to understand, and then you will understand why development is slow, graphics are a too priority, and even getting a new ship into the game is a monumental effort; on top of the fact that the game is still not a functional MMO and that development hasn't even begun yet (and at this point probably never will happen).

So with all that understanding, the easiest thing for people to do is to increase the graphic abilities for things they can get working. Turn the dials up to 11, and hope to god nobody notices that when the super pretty forests and cities show up, nobody realizes that there is no game behind it. It's just stuff and fluff; but it's somewhat cool stuff though!

And before I totally lose you, were going to circle back to the original concept of the massive text block: Star Citizen is doing all these things because working on the game itself is where the money comes from.

Duh, right?

Well here's the catch: actually finishing the development of the game is destructive. :)

If Star Citizen was done tomorrow, and had to rely on new sales, it would quickly dry up. Everybody loves to support it today because they see what it's trying to be, rather than what it is.

And this is a super powerful tool CIG has. That's why it's so hugely important for them to cultivate a social aspect of "them vs us" and immediately destroy any critical thought and negativity on their own groups. The hardcore inner circle people and their controlled forums are the bread and butter. Even Reddit is just an outlier of it all. Keep those people walled in, and develop indefinitely. :)

So, Star Citizen is always going to be in production, and even CR himself has said this; because it being made is where the money comes from. If it were to actually release it would die. As soon as reviewers can safely review it, it will get smoked. It will be a "very pretty but massively flawed and disappointing experience 1/10". CIG knows this, as they never want to lose the alpha/beta/always in production shield that nets them.

This is why you're moving into 7-8 years of development and you have a hideously pretty, but massively buggy and disappointing experience. The vision of what it may some day become keeps people spending money. The pretty art makes it look like it's legitimate.

So to round it all up!!!

CIG makes money by making a game.

Other companies make money by releasing a game for sale.

CIG has zero motivation to be like other companies when the state of their game is atrocious.

CIG must continue to make progress, and it must look pretty, but it can never be too much progress because they lack the talent.

In most, if not all software development systems, Star Citizen would have been shut down three years ago. As soon as the CEO missed their deadlines, and then went on to not have deadlines, it would have been killed.

If somehow it did manage to make it, it would have been shut down when the CEO bravely absolved himself of all responsibility for everything he said and promised.

What Star Citizen actually is, is the experimental husk of a project that should have been killed but wasn't. It is firing on that whole "what if... it wasn't cancelled?!" concept, and everybody gets to see it happen!

Could it be good: sure!

Could it be great: Absolutely!

Is it a failure: loving most assuredly. Nothing can stop it from already having failed. It failed many years ago, and that is unrecoverable. Sorry. :(

This is the truth about the game. They missed their chance. And star citizen..........its bad

But walking places at real-time pace is gonna get old real fast. Whether this thing will progress beyond an impressive tech demo, who knows. It's certainly not newbie friendly. Honestly, some of those meshes are really nice, but they’re missing gameplay from the walking sim.

I have a literal embarrassment of options these days other than Star Citizen, and that’s the problem, other than the ridiculous levels of monetization; macrotransactions, almost.

Edit: i tangent again. Found this post on reddit interesting;

https://reddit.com/r/TrueOffMyChest/comments/9zqdis/as_a_psychotherapist_subreddits_like_rmeirl_and/

It’s not about Star Citizen, but instead about how Reddit becomes an echo chamber for the measuring of attributes, and how people confabulate constantly. Its roughly connected to the concept of the unreliable narrator, or how nobody knows that you’re a dog on the internet.

I was yesterday playing 6 hours non stop with a few friends in a Cutlass, Hurricane, Warden... and it was loving amazing. 3.3.6 has a few things bugged but nevertheless we were doing missions and exploring and we were drooling all the way, it is so huge and detailed. Copy-pasta of my report on the FD forums on my experience so far with the free fly.

Well, gave it a go. I'll might expound on things later, but here is a summary.

Despite it looking nice-ish (not like haven't seen graphics like it or better elsewhere), and having of course to learn how things work, i can only say, not impressed.

My poor computer struggled. I don't have room on the SSD so loading times were horrendous. I'll time them later. My CPU is old, its a 4 core Phenom running at 3Ghz. Graphics card isn't bad though, its a GTX960. I was running on LOW settings and averaging 20-30 FPS. This is terrible. Sometimes it would dip to single figures. Best was about 40 FPS.

The walk model is horrible. I can't believe they spent so much effort to produce this. Animation glitches all over the place. Sometimes it wouldn't jump when i wanted to, sometimes it would only do a mini-jump. I saw other player models janking about.

The flight model... well, to be frank, it doesn't even deserve that name. Turrets in space is the right moniker. There is zero sense of flight despite the star dust.

I had to take a break after launching my ship, so logged out. Reloaded only discover i was back on Port O and that my ship was not retrievable. Huh? Ok, so i call in a replacement... 15 minute wait? Hells bells! Ok, i can expedite it, 2.5 mins. Ugh. Ok. What to do now?

Went up onto the station, noticed a marker... its my previous ship, 10km away in space. Dayum.... well, forget that, already called in a replacement. Saw another ship on the landing pad with its door open, so hopped in that. Sat in the copilot seat behind the pilot. Not sure if he noticed me. Started pressing buttons. Something went screwy, it was like i was flipped into the pilot seat, yet i had no control. Anyway, got bored, got out of the seat, and started shooting the pilot in the head. Didn't kill him despite shooting him several times at point blank range, and somehow he got out of his chair, and then i died... didn't even see him shooting at me.

Oh well, back at the station, my replacement has arrived.

After a lot of messing around and asking questions, finally got myself to Hurston and tried to QT down to loreville. However, no matter what i did, the drive wouldn't start spooling. I read CIG's guide. I read reddit threads, i read other threads. I had loreville set as my destination, i was targetted on the market, i pressed B, and the QT activiated, but wouldn't start spooling. Tried some other locations, asteroids, stations, nothing would let me QT.

With that was pretty frustrated and quit trying for today.

Will try again tomorrow, perhaps.

You're getting the full experience, for sure.

It's really interesting to me how nobody connects with the "Pace" of Star Citizen. The whole game is built to be super slow and ponderous. Running tires you out so you have to walk everywhere. Elevators and trains take literal minutes to transport you. Spaceships take up to half an hour just to fly between planets, and even longer to fly from Hurston's surface back to space. Two thirds of the missions in the game are cargo delivery, so all your time is spent just pointing your face at something and hitting forward, then tabbing out to do other things. I actually get what they're going for- it's supposed to be a great big universe, and things like travel should matter. People who want instant action are going to be dissatisfied, people who want a slow meditative experience are going to groove on it.

Except, they loving forgot to tell Cryengine any of that. It is an engine made for action games! So death comes at you super fast, in the blink of an eye. Your ship and your character are made of eggshells. Walking up a slope will kill you if you get unlucky. Actual combat time, with guns, is measured in seconds for your character. Once you're injured there is no slow crawl back to civilization- you bleed out in 10 seconds or less and you're dead, end of story. Your ship should degrade in combat, but it doesn't- it's either fine or dead, too. And if neither of those get you, likely you'll just time out or crash somewhere in the vastness of space. When you log back in, your trip will have been entirely reset, except now your ship is on a 15+ minute respawn timer, because gently caress you for trying to get right back to playing the game. Stand around and enjoy the experience.

So the reality of the game is that it isn't meditative at all. It's this intensely frustrating blend of slow, slow, slow oops really fast dead, and all progress is lost. The reason nobody fights in their videos or screenshots is because the game has trained them not to- nobody does anything that might jeopardize their character. The reward, inevitably, is a trip back to the wank pod and a 30 minute journey to get back to wherever the gently caress you were. The game isn't slow paced, it's actively punishing of any risk taking at all.

The whole you need to get into bed before you log out thing is terribly thought out.

A game crash, a network disconnect, the need to quit immediately... all of them result in you losing your ship.

Bad enough when you are on a free fly week so can just respawn a new one (and wait for it to arrive... zzzzz) but just imagine losing a kitted out Idris because you have to quit immediately and can't take the time to get to the wankpod, or hell, your router or ISP goes tits up.
