Since only nerds and tech weirdos attended the event, they were naturally the first users on the service. It always had pretensions of being a ubiquitous social networking platform, it was never 'for nerds'. The garbage was always going to appear once it got popular.

An environment that guarantees only positive feedback really allows horrible opinions to quickly metastasize.
