There wasn't a war over Crimea because Russian soldiers quietly moved into the area with plain uniforms, no insignia of any kind, and quietly occupied the peninsula. I don't think they have the means to advance on land... but they surely made the Ukrainians' lives in the region more miserable. Still, I don't think it's enough of an incentive for people in the govenment controlled areas to switch allegiance, it's not like the Donetsk / Lugansk model is a better alternative even to economic stagnation

They got away with overt military invasion in Crimea because special circumstances... I don't think they would be able to do the same on the mainland, they need to rely on their local proxies.

The Russians could launch an offensive amphibious operation even with a battalion-level or smaller landing, which would break the logistics supporting Maripol and have Donbass forces (or Russian forces disguised as DNR/LNR militias) stream past and link up with Russian Naval Infantry before the Ukrainians could reorganize. Or launch an invasion from Crimea, backed with naval support and squeeze the coastline with DNR/LNR/little green men/vacationing Russian Army until they link up. So many scenarios.
