Imho it's his best overall, but if i'm in the right mood I prefer Waterboy. My opinion on this changes frequently, usually determined by whichever I have watched more recently.

also wedding singer has the distinction of being the only movie I find Drew Barrymore super attractive in.

When I casually confuse the actor Graham Greene with the writer Graham Greene, it's very funny and people should laugh. Or, if I do it online instead of IRL, people should say lol or emptyquote it, because, as I said, it's very funny.

Not that i hate golf or anything, I am Scottish after all and I played a fair amount in my youth. Both my folks will happily watch the big tournament and so on and its just boring.

I despise anime but i would watch it over golf.

Somebody recently posted a neat factoid about the ending and how it was originally going to be the ending for some other movie but I'm completely blanking on everything that made this fact interesting, does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Iceland isn't the great. There's all these posts on /r/earthporn and the like that insist that stormy slate skies over mossy cold sharp rocks is the prettiest thing that ever happened. You can find the exact same landscape ringing the Arctic Sea for miles and miles and miles, but only one little wedge (the one that has a marketing department tasked with encouraging layovers) seems to be considered anything other than a hellscape.

I've been there twice and I've liked it. The northern lights are cool (never seen em myself tho), and there can be a stark beauty about it, and the hiking and day trips are cool... but it's just really cold and depressing overall. If you tag a picture with iceland it will get a bunch of OMG STUNNING reactions but that same picture without the tag would be used as an example of harsh miserable conditions.

There is no such thing as 'brake checking'. If someone in front of you brakes, it's because there's debris, a squirrel, or an erratic driver in front of them. It's not because they want to crash into your car.

If I was dying of a drug overdose, I'd be extremely upset if someone "saved" me, as they'd only be condemning me to take an additional decade or two to die. I don't do anything harder than borderline-responsible quantities of alcohol, but being alive on this planet is the loving worst and I cannot recommend it.

I am definitely addicted to cats, though. Everything about them (except their waste, and the ecological destruction if let outside unattended) makes me briefly not quite as sad to be alive.

I don’t know how controversial this is since it’s a cult classic and all, but Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master 2 is a better Kung fu movie than any of Bruce Lee’s.

HP Lovecraft's best work as far as actually being scary is not his cosmic horror, but his Gothic horror. I was way more spooked by The Lurking Fear and The Rats in the Walls then The Call of Cthulhu or At the Mountains of Madness.

I always thought Stephen King's todash stuff in The Dark Tower and the other stuff it leaks in to is more interesting/"scary" than the lovecraft cthulu stuff. I never actually read it though, I've only been exposed to it through movies and some board game about cthulu my roommate kept dragging me to, so I'm kind of negatively biased against it.

Baseless unpopular opinion I'm pulling out of my rear end: Stephen King will eventually be remembered as a greater horror writer than Lovecraft.

I dunno that that’s unpopular. Imo the biggest thing holding King back is his rep as an airport trash fiction writer, but thqt’s unearned. He’s ridiculously prolific but even his weird poo poo is still noticeably better than say, Dean Koontz.

I love HP “russians aren’t white” Lovecraft but there’s very little of his I’d suggest to someone who doesn’t already like him. Some of it is borderline unreadable.

Lovecraft will always lead the important category of “most metal bands influenced” among horror writers, though he’s a distant second to Tolkien among all authors.

I agree. Lovecraft ranges from "interesting ideas smothered in purple prose" to "absurdly racist schlock".

His own contemporaries were better than him at writing cosmic horror. IMO, the best cosmic horror story is The Willows by Algernon Blackwood.

I guess it's more of an unpopular opinion among people who have never really read King and just know that reputation, which seems to be a lot of people I know off the internet. He does churn out a lot and most appeal to a wide audience, but I don't see why so many literature snobs see that as a bad thing - not everything has to be a impenetrable tome that requires a book telling you how to read it like James Joyce or something. He's still a very good writer and it's really a shame that his biggest/in my opinion greatest work got such a lovely movie despite Elba's best efforts. It would have been better if it had just stayed as a book.

Lovecraft is interesting because his best stories really knock it out of the park and are insanely influential. The rest of it often ranges from "OK, so you're a racist that put some words together" and "barely comprehensible." The way I recommend him to anybody that hasn't heard of him is to read the best things first then the other stuff until you lose interest. Some of his stuff is just some failed experiments, really. Worth reading for its historical importance but not something to call home about.

Poe did some good stuff, but a lot of it is very of it's time. Stories about noble blood lines being degraded over time until you're down to one last scion who's a weirdo in a lovely marriage don't have quite the impact now that they did back then
