I have no doubts that all it takes to bust open my front door is a will and a way, but I'd much rather whoever's doing so needs to either use a pry bar or start picking the lock rather than spoof a IoT lock that it's me coming in the front door.

Yeah it wasn't Nest, it was some other company that I've never heard of. It was in one of the YOSPOS tech threads and CSPAM last week-ish. I'll see if I can find it.

The modern world has made me paranoid. I'm definitely putting good analog locks on the house I eventually own, and probably cameras. I guess camera software with poo poo like geofencing and loiter detection is withing the reach of normal people nowadays.

Casimir Radon posted:I mean it should just defer to your schedule or safe temps if it loses connection. It must have been some other company's thermostats because it seems like Nest already took that possibility into account. I had a Nest that had the wifi chip go bad and had to have a new one sent under warranty. I can confirm that it reverts to plain old "set the temp to this" functionality when it can't connect. I think it would have problems if it lost power entirely and died but given that it is powered by the wiring and has a battery backup to continue operating absent power, it would almost certainly start relentlessly notifying you on your phone and the thermostat itself that there's been a power loss.

Immanentized posted:Not to mention that most of the more popular models have an issue with wireless firmware updates bricking the entire lock. This, in addition to the fact that many don't ship with analogue failsafes (I.e. a loving key) means that you can be 100% locked out of your own home because of shoddy coding and execution. It must own like hell to be an unscrupulous piece of poo poo willing to rip people off in 2018. I refuse to like them but god damned if I won't envy their freedom.

I love how whenever someone calls trump racist it is always "disproven" with 'LOWEST BLACK UNEMPLOYMENT EVER' Also I have a keypad lock that is handy but it still can be used with a key and it's not online at all. It's handy cause I can have friends drop poo poo off while I'm out of town and not have to give them a key to look after

The smart money is backing both sides, because you can write off the loss either way. People got mad as poo poo at so many corporations donating to the Trump inaugural committee except almost all those corporations donated the same amount to the democrats.

Yeah, if there's a short that comes through the AC wiring you're probably losing any thermostat with electronics in it unless it's really minor. Heck it would probably make a "dumb" thermo a pain to use if you're getting a jolt when you touch it.

Yeah I know about the SS Saint Louis and the US turning away literal boat loads of Jews, but her underlying point that it wasn't illegal for them to show up in the first place to ask for asylum (even if the US royally hosed up and didn't grant it) is still correct and on point.
