So, yeah, a lot of the devil is in the details, but the basic concepts are the same, and most of this episode doesn't really bump into any of the differences between western and japanese perceptions of trans people. So it's really hard to see how it's something that could have gotten lost in translation.

As a moron, I just thought she was freaking out about growing up and needing to shave her legs or something. It didn't register what was going on until Sakura freaked out and I googled and saw Masao was a boy name. Once that was established though I have no idea how you interpret what's going on any other way than her being trans. In conclusion, you're all Masao and I'm Lily.

Do note that if anything, Crunchyroll muddled the translation and made it less direct: JP audio: Sakura: 途中から沢山出てきた正雄ってだれ？ Lily: リリィが捨てた名前 My translation: Sakura: Who's this "Masao" you started mentioning a lot halfway through? Lily: That's the name I abandoned. Other trivia: - Lily's profile on the website says ketchup, mustard, and mayo are her favorite foods, seaweeds are her least favorite foods, and one of her hobbies is reading magazines on heavy machinery. There's one flashback scene where bottles of ketchup and mayo are on the dinner table when Lily's eating with her dad, and another where they're riding a power shovel together. You can also see Lily reading a book about heavy machinery in episode 2. - In episode 4, Lily is a bit less enthusiastic about going to the hot springs bathhouse than the rest of the crew. Yeah, the "sute" explicitly means Lily discarded/renounced Masao as an id. Like, I'm guessing CR was trying to both "find a happy middle" and get things translated ASAP, but if you know Japanese it's not so much "What did Lily meant by that?" as it is "There's no ambiguity. Lily straight up gave up the name/id she was born with". I should probably re-watch the episode with the Spanish subtitles, but I'm honestly not sure if there'd be that much difference, since I'm guessing they're running off a similar translation script/whachamacallit.

Crunchy translators are both rushed and underpaid - it's far more likely that whoever was translating this show wasn't really considering any kind of nuance at all, more than any kind of intentional attempt to 'find a middleground.'
