Checked out the gift cards, no restrictions. Good as cash. Not applicable for taxes and fees.

Pulled the trigger even though I said I was going to hold my Pixel 2 for another year.

Here's my referral link.

Does this mean I use 2 gb on my phone, and 5 gb on my tablet, I still only pay $60 total for data?

Or does "data budget" mean what I prepay for?

Do not attempt to adjust your set.
For those thinking of bringing a non-pixel to Fi, I've been using a Note 9 for a couple of months now and the only unexpected issue I've run into is that I get a "voicemail notification error" text from Fi every time I get a voicemail. This is on top of the normal voicemail notification + transcript that hangouts gives. Everything else is great and I have a headphone jack, suckers.

Connectivity is actually improved over my nexus 6P, at least in the NYC area. I attribute this to the Note 9 being unable to switch to the poo poo-rear end Sprint towers. I don't miss the automatic Google secure wifi points since they were rarer than unicorns and tended to cause brief switching disconnects, which was annoying. Also secure wifi seems pointless in general but that's just my opinion.

*Since I have hangouts integration enabled, all messaging goes through Google servers, so any SMS problems inherent to using an unsupported phone wouldn't affect me. I imagine they'll iron out any existing SMS issues anyway, now that other phones are supported.

GD it...I wasn't going to get a P3XL, but poo poo it's basically free, so whatever. Used your referral code bro, thanks.

This deal is fishy good...ported my GV number (or will once the phone arrives). Prolly use it for 120 days and bail back to T-Mo. I use a shitload of data, so Fi isn't a good concept for me. Getting a 128 3XL for the price of 3 months of Fi service is well and good.

How easy is it to change a Fi number after signing up? I want to try it out without having to cancel my current Verizon service to see if it works in places I regularly go before committing to it. I understand Google's support can be, uh, less than great at times.

Really, it's down to how much you hate yourself. Decent odds you end up losing both numbers and first line support tells you "oh, a specialist will have to call you back about this, I'll forward it just as soon as you hop off the chat" before printing out the support ticket and flushing it down a toilet.

I couldn't port my number over from Sprint for unknown reasons, but I've only had 10/10 customer service with Fi so ymmv

Is anyone familiar enough with Tango to know whether the GC is transferable? I'd like to ditch the 6P and get a Pixel 3 but my girlfriend travels way more often and would actually get use of $800 in Delta dollars.

I think, if I understood it all correctly, you get a Tango code. This is basically a gift card for Tango that you use to buy gift cards. So you should be able to give her the code? There was some chat in the Slickdeals link about being able to split the giftcards across Delta and Southwest and Hotels.com, so you don't have to use it all for one card. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

I don't remember how or what T-Mobile's unlimited deal is, but Fi is going to cost you $80 for unlimited, then you get throttled at the 15gb mark.

I did exactly this- it's called a late port. Chat was able to port my old number to my line when I gave them all the info they needed. It was hassle free.

That was my impression, too. It looks like you buy a phone, get a Tango code 75-90 days after purchase (or maybe activation, a few months either way) and then redeem that code for whatever your phone's cost towards gift cards from Delta, Southwest, Airbnb, and Hotels.com. I would then assume those codes that get emailed can be redeemed by anyone, right? I'm just concerned either the Tango code or the codes emailed by them might be tied to my name so that she couldn't use them. Or, alternatively, if we don't wind up using them, sell them off at a discount to recoup part of the phone's cost.

Yes. Bill Protection varies with number of users, not devices.

Note that you can only have one phone line per user to discourage fatwalleters and the like from ruining everything. (So for example if you wanted to add a work phone, you'd need to add a second user, and you'd be bumped up to the 2-user Bill Protection tier.)

Fi's throttled speed is basically unusable. It's a total joke.

I only know this because their system took a poo poo and decided I had used 17 gigs when I normally use like, 2, and nobody in their support department thinks that's odd enough to investigate further.

What application(s) burned through that much data when you look at Settings > Data Usage > Mobile data usage and select the affected time frame? Did you accidentally livestream the high res chronicles of Javid's sexual escapades? If it was a Google service just burning through it you should take a screen cap and pester them about it.

Literally no app did it. Like if you go down the list of apps with a calculator it adds up to ~2.5 gigs which it should be but then it says the total is 17 or whatever. Fi support thinks that's totally normal.

Is T-Mobile really that cheap? I just switched from an iPhone on AT&T to a Pixel 3 on Fi and I'm saving like $60 a month. $20 + gigs seems as cheap as possible for cell plans these days, but then again I was on an $85 AT&T plan for the past 10 years so maybe I'm just out of the loop.

Idk, if you're willing to buy in bulk (like 6 months to a year at a time) Mint is a great cheap option.

Holy Hell.
I've been a Fi user for almost a year and I like it since I travel internationally frequently. (The reception in rural USA is poor, though.)

I guess I'll take advantage of the deal and upgrade from a Pixel 2 to a Pixel 3. I had planned to keep this phone for another year, but I will easily spend the phone's cost on Delta next year.

It's going to cost me a little money out of pocket due to taxes and stuff, but a brand new top of the line phone for under a hundred bucks seems like a no brainer.

Am I missing something or is this just a drat good deal?

In that very short window, the 128 XLs are gone. I'll check later after my flight home. Jeez, sorry man.

Edit: also, is there a way to buy Preferred Care at the POS via the Fi deal? As in pay $129 once? All I saw was a $7/month drip. Don't want that since PC helps with resale value. Looks like you can't just buy it once via this Fi deal. Weird.

They ran out of gift cards actually!

They're still doing the device credit at least, but it's been very successful. It was originally supposed to end tomorrow but ended early because they ran out.

Now that they are officially supporting iPhones, what are the biggest obstacles to getting the full experience on iPhone? The way I see it, there are currently three big iPhone shortcomings:

1) Inability to do network switching.

2) No visual voicemail.

3) Flaky MMS support for texting with people who don’t use iMessage.

Which parties have to make an agreement to get these things working? It seems to me like 2 and 3 can be fixed by Google making an agreement with the carriers to change/update something?

But 1 seems like Google probably needs Apple to program something into iOS to allow for network switching? Can the network currently even be manually switched on an iPhone? Or is it something that’s just not technically possible with current iPhone hardware?

Javid

:jpmf:
I'm guessing Apple could make that functionality happen on iphone if they really wanted to, so either they do or don't. I highly doubt they'd do it just to sell a few phones to a carrier run by their competition, so if it DOES happen that'll indicate Apple thinks it will become useful for other reasons.

From what I can tell, the reason why the Fi phones can do it is due to the hardware and the software. So it'd probably have to be something Apple has to allow in the next iPhone hardware-wise.

Normally, I'd say Apple would never help Google but they did just help Microsoft with Windows 10 by making iCloud work better with the October Update.

EDIT: Wow. People are super upset about the promo for the travel funds ending early because Google ran out of gift cards.

https://www.reddit.com/r/projectfi/comments/a1dh67/_/

People apparently waited, thinking they had time, and nope ..it's gone.

However, the terms for the deal stated that it's while supplies last...but just in the terms and no where else. So people are claiming fraud and other things.

For those who DID get things on time, there's no indication after the order, email or otherwise, that states they got the promotion. Some who ordered got an indication in the cart that they got it, some didn't but they still ordered early.

No one got email confirmation. Fi support is frozen with tons of angry people calling and chatting.

Apparently the BOGO offer was the same... though it sounds like most people didn't read the terms on that either.

Does the Fire HD 10 have a SIM Card slot or cellular radios? Wikipedia seems to indicate that only the Kindle Fire HD (8.9" version) from 2012 supports cellular connectivity.

Fi has supported tablets for some time, assuming they have a compatible LTE radio/sim slot. The LTE iPads, at least, have worked for a couple years now. The HD 10 doesn't have LTE so it won't work...with any service :)
