That's pretty much the dictionary definition of privilege - not knowing or understanding the full extent of what minorities have to deal with because you don't deal with it yourself on a regular basis. People shouldn't need any kind of special qualification to do the things Matty for example refused to do, imo. It's easy poo poo which is why not doing it is super galling.

but in the past few years of being repeatedly disappointed with the subculture on this front, speedrunning has no effective delivery method for that kind of peer shaming. Which leaves GDQ as the only entity that can, really?

this is the sort of thing that would hinge on the platforms that enable this (twitch and friends) deciding to step up and shut down bigotry and racism, which they absolutely won't bother doing because it turns out that being a humongous rear end in a top hat is a great way to get viewers and viewers mean more money for twitch :v:

Oh my god really? No. The vast majority of people who get publicly shamed are not clear-cut Nazis. That is why it's a bad practice.
The worst case scenario is a person says something dumb or even something smart that gets taken out of context, and then that gets spread around until it hits a tipping point where EVERYONE knows about it. Then the shamed person loses their job and has to move to another country just to live in peace. You think I'm exaggerating but that exact thing has happened before on Twitter.

People used to get punished this way by small towns. There's a reason why it's not done anymore, and it's not just the internet. It ruins lives.

ANYWAY, if that's not what peer shaming means then whatever.

We're not talking about making some dumb joke. We're talking about these people making anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, etc... remarks. Those people should be shamed into hiding and their lives ruined.

I was referring more to your friends politely informing you that you are saying some dumb poo poo, so that people realise that they are saying some dumb poo poo before it it in fact blows up all over the internet and fucks you over hard. Getting shunned from an event doesn't seem like it serves this purpose too well.

perhaps the wrong turn of phrase but I kinda fear the same thing you do but speedrunning has proven ineffective at not reaching that stage. Social media in general I suppose having much to do with that?

I don't know. This hobby is a weird mix of the personal relations and the ability to see everyone's dumbass thoughts at the same time.

I'm not seeing a better option other than just "gently caress a nazi gtfo out of my hobby". It consistently doesn't pan out any other way.

define "something dumb"

easiest way to see what kind of person someone is is to just look at their twitter likes because the racists and neo-nazis never hide those tracks

That does sound like a good method. The incident I was referring to was this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_shaming#Justine_Sacco_incident though there are other examples listed there.

I'm glad they're acknowledging this.

I'm still looking forward to AGDQ '19; I'm not going to stop supporting them immediately because I feel like that would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. But the next year is going to be very important for GDQ and I sincerely hope they improve as a result of this.
