SSA is a clusterf*(k right now. I'm a CTE (T2) and work in an all CS (claims specialists aka claims representatives) office. The work and training are so poor right now our lobby has been at 2 1/2 to 3 hour waits this month. One person to answer phones. The public is brutal. I feel for you newbies.

Luckily I'm not in a FO, heh. We have 10 CTEs at my PC spread across 11 modules, 5 of which will be retiring within a couple of years.

CS (Claims Specialist) is supposed to be the new consolidated position combining the former positions of CA (Claims Authorizer) at the PC (processing center) and CR (Claims Representative) at field offices. I just hope it makes it easier for me to transfer to a FO in the future. Our training is garbage too. When I got promoted from BA to CS, got done with the classroom training and started doing cases under review, after a few months of case reviews they had to reset our training because the journeymen CSes reviewing our cases apparently weren't catching any of our mistakes. They switched us to having CTEs review our cases and it was like starting over, errors everywhere. When our CTEs retire here we are screwed. There are only a couple that I actually believe really know how to do all the more complex/rare stuff like adjusting earnings records. edit: when I got hired back in 2010 they literally handed this out. you can't really see but it's like 20-30 pages of fine print:

such good memories of my SSA training... The sad thing is that the expertise you gain is so unique to that job that it doesn't really transfer well if you want to move to another agency Does claims specialist still cap out at gs 11?

Yeah after 4 years (assuming you grt the grade each year by doing your job). Then people usually move onto CTE or management.

That's true to an extent for every government closure, whether it's caused by funding, weather, or anything else. The "essential" designation is usually somewhat formal and if you're not sure you are then you likely aren't, but check with your bossmasters before you no-show.

I'm at a DDS, so a state employee, but there seem to have been an influx of new CRs at the FOs in my state that have not been properly trained and are messing up stupid things on cases. A delight. That being said our office has a mega high turnover rate and hired 3 new classes of examiners this calendar year so we are certainly not on any sort of competency high horse. Jimmy Carter will almost certainly die during this administration; I would probably be willing to bet like $10,000 that he will not get a national day of mourning holiday. This is different than an agency letting people leave early. when we get early releases, they usually don't announce it until a day or two before. I hadn't heard of getting floating hours, either

Historically our agency directors had always given "59 minutes" before every single holiday. Many agencies do that. But our new Director hasn't given it even once. Apparently when other leadership asked him about it, he said something like, "Before every holiday? That's 10 hours a year!" He is not popular, to put it mildly. Luckily the Christmas Eve thing isn't his decision, heh. But as I recall from years past, I don't think OPM announced it until like the pay period before? So we might not know about the 24th for a while.

I was “Not referred” for a position on the basis of “Not qualified - Education/Experience” but I definitely have the appropriate background. It’s a non-GS 12-14 position and I’m currently 7 months into GS11 (first government job) but that’s only bc my current agency lowballed me and accepting the offer was the least worst option at the time. What’s really annoying is that the work is extremely similar to my PhD research and there are “many vacancies” listed. Is there any way to appeal? A contact email is listed.
