Based on numerous conversations with co-workers, I think it's basically an inability to connect with the wider world at large as long as they get to drink beer, drive big trucks, and mow the lawn in relative comfort. Then they get goosed by some scare tactic like abortion or immigration, or a possible reduction in those aforementioned comforts by even the slightest percent. Not supporting Republicans means that they will lose their way of life. It's a goddamn cult that has no intention of any change, even if it's an improvement. There's also a heaping dose of "God has this, so who cares?"

A work buddy who moved to Tarrant specifically because it was conservative county pulled off a gold medal performance of mental gymnastics to avoid confronting that this was something happening in his county party and ended the routine with some deflection. I finally got him to a point where he said he'd email his precinct chair and tell them that they need to vote this down on 2019-01-10, but I somehow doubt he'll actually do it.

How long ago did one of them get shot there because that might explain it  e: googled it, happened a few months ago the guy I saw was doing it like 2 years ago so maybe he was right to be scared after all
