To be fair though the French almost universally grow to hate their presidents very soon. Same happened with Sarkozy and Hollande. But yeah, letting the common people pay for the environment when the biggest polluters contribute nothing is just evil. Protests have spread to Belgium as well, where gas and diesel are even more expensive. And it's not just about that, really. It taps into a common dissatisfaction with the ever-rising cost of living (at no discernable improvement of what you pay for, on the contrary, with e.g. power blackouts feared in Belgium for the winter) while wages stagnate and income inequality keeps rising. The common tactic of right-wing blowhards is to try and change the public conversation by drumming up the old "b-b-but IMMIGRANTS and ISLAM" rhetoric, but somehow I feel many people see it for the ridiculous smokescreen it is.
