I just dropped off for whatever reason), but the White-faced Bear's tidal-wave-of-spiders posse is one of my favorite things in it. (Also, Darcy is great) I picked it up very recently and binged the whole thing over like, two very dull days at work. I didn't really know what to expect and found myself almost immediately enthralled. It's not a very original premise as far as webcomics go, but it does a good job at developing that weird unease and mystery in small town America. Naturally I got current very quickly on it and experienced that very terrible feeling of loss when you try to click for more and there's no more. Anyway yeah I love the White-faced Bear's tidal wave of spiders. I really like that trope where something heralds the arrival of some elder being.

TL;DR for anyone who doesn't care enough to research why Tumblr's finally dying for real: Remember how the internet shamed Reddit into finally dealing with the child porn? Imagine if instead of that, they dug their heels in, and when they got removed from the app store for being a source of child porn, made a bot that flags and removes anything it detects as potentially adult, rather than bother trying to moderate. That's Tumblr right now.

I was about to ask what was up because all I'd read was that they're taking the porn down but if it's an overzealous bot I guess I could see a lot of comics getting flagged.

I been asking around, seems the only other comparable and current multimedia long-form shitposting site is pillowfort, which is in some sort of mid-launch state right now?

# ? Dec 4, 2018 09:29 |

I've also heard the name "Mastodon" thrown around, but that seems more like open-source Twitter?

Pillowfort has been in development as a replacement for Tumblr by various people who pretty much gave up on Tumblr moderating/doing things the userbase wanted, and yeah, it's just now approaching launch. I think it's currently in "five dollars gets you beta access" mode. I have no idea how good/reliable it will be, though. It's basically just a user-funded internet project, which don't have the best track record for consistency. Then again, AO3 has similar roots and is still going strong.

So [un]Divine's story is really ramping up now, and if you haven't heard of it, it's about a guy who gives up his soul to summon a demon to help him deal with his problems and why that was an incredibly no good bad decision (or maybe not??) It's set mainly in a religious school on a small Caribbean island in the 90s, and features creepy-rear end angel designs so if you like that sort of thing you might like this webcomic! http://www.undivinecomic.com/comic/page-1 Updates MWF on a pretty stable schedule, if you're concerned about that.

Yeah, Newgrounds has had gallery functionality for forever and they leave all the porn out the in the open, so a lot of people flocking are there now. It's still kind of a typical gallery site though, not the most suitable for when you just want to dump material online or make bizarre multimedia shitposts. Also dunno if any of the multi-site posting tools support it, looks like Postybirb doesn't at the moment.

Deviantart's also still around, for what that's worth. I think a lot of people are also prepared to parachute over to Patreon when things go wrong, but that lacks the discoverability that was half the point of Tumblr. Who knows, maybe there'll even be a boom of independent websites as people try to avoid being totally dependent on a single platform. That'd be nice.

Patreon also has issues with NSFW material if you're actually NSFW, tho (which a lot of webcomics folks offer at high tiers). Displaying it directly is actually quite difficult - typically, artists would do it with links to Tumblr blogs (no longer viable) or...well, I guess zipping the materials and offering them for direct download without actually displaying them.

You wanna be seen by the most people you can, and most people aren't gonna bother with other sites if they can get everything they want in one place, and it takes pretty wild circumstances to move people once they've settled on one central nexus (like, the admin randomly up and wipes out the entire userbase's galleries) A Wizard of Goatse fucked around with this message at 18:15 on Dec 4, 2018 |

LiveJournal got bought out by Russians and started mass-banning communities that had 'objectional content'. Which is why everyone evacuated to Tumblr in the first place.

fun hater posted:hiveworks only hosts comics they choose to host, its not a open host like smackjeeves et al It’s also not an actual webhost, just a publicity network. Every comic featured on Hiveworks has its own website and host already. Also yeah they’re incredibly picky about what they let on. The artis of at least one really well done comic I’ve followed on and off one said she put together a Hiveworks portfolio and was rejected. ...And yet they also promote Goblins proudly, so your mileage may vary.

Yeah, the style that was already popularized... By manga and anime. I dare you to point me to one loving decent webcomic that had Megatokyo as an "influence" other than how not to produce content. It has been several days and several pages, but I'm still marveling that he got away with that. There hasn't been any kind of concerted effort to make him explain where the money went or even to post an update after a year and a half. Also, he seems to have spent all of it somehow, and is living month to month.

Meanwhile, in Widdershins Going with the antipodean hypothesis, the counterpart to an anchor in the Himalaya would be off the coast of Chile, with no major island in that area, so I'm gonna call it the R'lyeh Anchor; making the globe incident foreshadowing of world destruction if it is ever found.
