This has just improved my mood by about 1000%. edit: the effect was genuinely so amazing that I actually started playing Doom for the first time. I'm not a fan of console FPSs because they usually make me feel incompetent, but goddamn is it relaxing to go around smashing demons' heads in with their own torn-off limbs when you're in a really bad mood Pookah has a new favorite as of 16:27 on Dec 5, 2018 |

Nordick posted:Idk man, I'd much sooner drop trou for a good bassist than some hotshot guitar noodler As someone who plays both but is predominately a bassist, they have a really different learning curve. Guitar is harder to start with because of trying to manipulate 6 relatively thin strings and performing chords, but once you've got the basics down it's not very difficult to continue and it mostly becomes a matter of memorizing more chords. Bass is easy to begin with because a lot of bands don't require the bassist to play more than 4 or 5 notes at best in a song and they can get by in a punk band with virtually no effort because of how everything is mixed (hence the "bassists are stupid" jokes), but it's harder to excel because the thick strings, higher pressure on the strings needed to sound clear, and large distances between strings and frets compared to a guitar make it harder to play quickly or make a chord sound right. There's good reason bassists rarely play chords, and it's because they almost always sound terrible until you get really good at it. Shredding on a bass is an incredible feat, whereas you can throw a rock in a music store and hit someone who can play a loud guitar solo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPAqEQ1_ctQ

I tried playing a Primus song once and just gave up after about 10 seconds. Playing chords on a bass normally is pretty difficult if you want it to sound clear. Les Claypool does rapid chord switches combined with slapping and popping, which is a whole different type of skill apart from plucking with fingers or a pick.

Fun fact: Les Claypool auditioned to be the bass player of Metallica and they didn't take him because he was too good. Given the amount of poo poo that the metallica bass players have received over the years, i think this was a good career move.

When answering the question, 'How much weight can a lego truck hold' the answer 'over 9000N' is very very rarely useful because newtons are not a measure of weight. If someone asked you how much a bag of sugar weighed you wouldn't answer in newtons obviously. Neither would you if someone asked you how much weight something could hold.

Yeah...I just started playing the bass myself. Playing a particular note is easy. Not playing any other notes at the same time is hard and requires you to do ungodly things with your fingers and possibly other appendages.

Aramoro posted:When answering the question, 'How much weight can a lego truck hold' the answer 'over 9000N' is very very rarely useful because newtons are not a measure of weight. Newtons absolutely are a measure of weight. Kilograms measure mass. It's not my fault that laypeople keep saying "weight" when they mean "mass." Force, including the downward force of gravity that we call "weight," is regularly measured in N in technical contexts. What is implied when someone measures a down force (like with the scale that the Lego video is using) is that the force is however many kg multiplied by 9.8 m/s2, the acceleration of gravity on the surface of the Earth. Of course, that means that the answer may be inaccurate to the tune of 1% or so because of natural variations in the local gravity of different places on Earth. And as far as someone asking me how much a bag of sugar weighed, I'd answer in pounds, because that's what's printed on bags of sugar around here
