Metroid prime 1 is a fantastic reinterpretation of metroid. It is probably one of the best games I've ever played. Metroid Prime 2 however, oof. That game is twice as long as it should be. The ammo gimmick is interesting in concept, but way too irritating in practice.

Here's the thing you need to know about the ammo in Prime 2: you know the objects you can shoot that drop health powerups? If you shoot them with the dark or the light beam, they drop between 5-15 ammo for the opposite beam.

With this knowledge, you can forget all about having to hoard ammo and experiment freely, and figure out what each enemy is weak to. Quite a few enemies are highly resistant to the power beam but die real quick to one of the other two.

Edit: another tip to avoid turning the game into a tedious slog - in the early dark world areas, don't bother waiting around inside the light bubbles for your health to refill to max. Just book it through the area, there are more than enough health pickups scattered around to keep you alive, so long as you don't try exploring away from the obvious path. You can come back and do that later. Nothing will kill your desire to play the game faster than standing around doing nothing watching your health slooooowly refill, a tense race through the darkness grabbing health pickups as you find them is much more fun

It's a post apocalyptic road rash with procedurally generated tracks and random objectives. You get money and XP as you go through a run: You can spend $ to get beef up your character, and then once you finish the campaign or die you can spend the XP on permanent upgrades.

Gameplay is fun but also pretty shallow, kinda like old road rash games. It could be a cool pick up and play kind of game, but the load times were total buzzkills. It would be nice if those could be improved somehow.

It's also worth noting that the Switch version has had a serious visual downgrade. It's not an amazing looking game as is but this version looks like an incredible bland early PS3 game. This obviously had to be done to keep a steady 60FPS, something that would otherwise make it unplayable due to the need for quick reflexes.

I love the Metroid games but let's be honest, the current format is stale as gently caress and there's nothing left for them to do. Give us something different. Samus being on the opposite side of the GF is the perfect setup for doing something new.

Edit: also Samus really needs a break from getting turned into stuff. Bird -> Phazon -> Metroid. Leave her alone!

Lol, I just found out something utterly hosed up about the Sega Collection on Steam. In the workshop people ar not just uploading silly hacks that let you play as Donkey Kong in Streets of Rage 2, but also fully functioning ROMs. I just played through the first two stages of Moonwalker and it works perfectly. How the hell is Sega not aware of this? :psyduck:

Brother, that's nothing. It used to have hundreds upon hundreds of ROM hacks and pirate games on top of...

[looks at Workshop]

Well, poo poo, this is how it used to look. They wiped out nearly all of these workshop games a year or two ago; were adamantly removing games that broke the ToS. Only fan translations, bug fixes, and sprite hacks were available for several months. The Wild West has returned! Which means I need to look for which game has Contra Hard Corps ROM this time.
So, Prime4 stopgap?

Please be real. I boxed my Wii back up and I was never able to properly rip an ISO of Prime Trilogy to play in Dolphin. Though, to be honest, I sort of never want to play Prime 2 again.

Me for 2/3rds of Prime 2 on Gamecube: "Oh look, another boss that simply runs screen left or right faster than the max turn speed and only stops to charge up their attack. So original."

Nah the best ones are their reactions to Dark Samus. They go from being utterly terrified of the fact that there are now two hunters, to being flabbergasted at her obsession with Phazon and calling her a "shrew," to ultimately drinking the Kool-Aid and hailing Dark Samus as their queen.

It's the best. :allears:

This is all great advice. MP2 gets less fun the more carefully you play, especially when it comes to hoarding ammo. Just fire away, experiment, and don't be afraid of consequences. Using the power beam to conserve ammo makes the game real tedious. It's better than MP1 in almost every way, my only major complaint is the rigid, repetitive structure of the game world. (Get keys > unlock boss room > fight boss, repeat x3 vs MP1's more organic layout)

A switch version would be great since I want to replay the series in HD and 16:9 without using the wiimotes because they suck rear end. Dolphin M+K would be ideal but I've never been able to get the setup right so the aiming isn't unplayably floaty. Switch version would solve all this

Managed to play about 2 hours of Monster Boy, it's pretty good so far! The art and music are fantastic, I love the animations on the Pig especially. It reminds me a lot of a Shantae game but without all of the bad stuff that plagues those games.

It's been 100% linear so far, so definitely expect that as opposed to something like Hollow Knight. Difficulty is not super high or anything but you take a lot of damage and have very little health to start, so you definitely have to pay attention to what you're doing.

If there's any surprises I'm praying for another Punch-Out because the Wii revival was loving fire.
