The alternate ending to TLJ that someone here in one of these threads proposed was so loving good that I'm going to find it hard to get invested in any other Star Wars films going forward, since they're not the ones that poster thought up.

He has a throne now, so obviously, he would want a crown and a new mask is like a crown. It's amusing that everyone seems to latch onto Kylo's news. No one cares about the other things. I'm still hoping for Rey to get a double bladed saber as an extension of her staff training.

lol that Disney was only able to make 2 movies out of a trilogy before running out of steam completely. I really don't see any way to effectively wrap up this trilogy... Unironically, the best thing they could do is say "uhhh, The Last Jedi was the end" and start something new.

I'm legitimately surprised they haven't announced that Rian Johnson's trilogy is cancelled yet because I'm still reasonably sure - not 100% guaranteed certain, but reasonably sure - that they will do that. Oh, well. I am probably making too early a guess; if it happens, it will probably happen next year. I imagine Disney (not Lucasfilm, obviously) will make a decision once they've had an opportunity to gauge the response to the first Episode IX trailer.

Weren't they not even clear on whether or not his trilogy was meant to be a big deal EPISODES X/VI/XII thing or if it was just, like, three Star Wars movies from him or something? After how Solo performed I think that's a more important detail than we all thought it was previously. I do wonder what the plan even is for Episode IX. Like they the past two movies made huge efforts to reestablish the galactic order as a huge empire vs. plucky under supplied rebels. And then IX ended on such a note that like I wouldn't even mind if they just did a time jump. Same for whatever movies they do next I wouldn't mind if they just straight up jumped ahead thirty years or something. I like both Finn and Rey but Poe Dameron in Last Jedi was just dumb as hell.

Johnson's movies are not supposed to be Episode number movies, but a trilogy about some thing or era never covered in Star Wars before. No one knows more than that.

Statements about what Johnson's trilogy would/will be presuppose more structure on Disney's part than I think is warranted. There's no grand plan being followed here. Decisions about what potential movies will be sold as won't be finalized until the film is actually in theaters, if then. Schwarzwald fucked around with this message at 23:01 on Dec 6, 2018 |

They should forget about what "counts" and what doesn't after they finish the numbered movies. They should proceed like George Miller did with the last Mad Max movie and present them all as stories and legends about these characters rather than historical records; I think that would be make good sense for Star Wars. Don't allow "canon" to constrain them, basically. Lucas and Filoni ignored what was "canon" when they were working on the Clone Wars series because they had better ideas. That's the approach Lucasfilm needs to follow now.

I mean, Filoni also brought a lot of things from the EU canon into The Clone Wars, which had the funny side effect of making old some old EU stuff "canon" after the Disney buyout. These actions led to me hearing the word "Dathomir" in a theatrically released Star Wars movie, which is loving wild to me.

I mean, they might reconsider things if IX isn't a huge blockbuster which sells a billion toys. It's not like fans hating on the latest Star Wars is a new, unheard of thing.

IX could be a huge blockbuster (it probably won't, but it could) but it won't sell a billion toys just because I think kids are less interested in toys than they were even thre or four years ago. They like Fortnite and Scandinavian YouTubes who squawk about rape and make anti-Semitic jokes. There's no Toys R Us left to sell toys.

Here in Orlando at Disney Springs (giant outdoor mall on Disney property) there are 2 different stores selling nothing but Star Wars toys, and they’re constantly packed. They both have build your own lightsaber stations that kids run to. They’re pretty fun.
