there'll be a whole generation of expensive gimmick hardware released after samsung launches their foldable chunky-boi.

it will be exactly as pointless and gimmicky as it seems now, but tens of people will buy them, and complain bitterly when they're quietly abandoned

Like: mobile devices with two screens in a clamshell like a TNG tricorder?

Why would anyone think this was a good idea?

foldable computers are one of those nerd shibboleths that never go away no matter how spectacularly they fail in the marketplace

see also: dockable computers (plug your cellphone into your monitor and hey presto its a pc!) and modular phones (phoneblocks, project ara, etc)

I just realized that it's because they resemble a Tricorder from :techno:, isn't it?

I mean, the PAAD ended up being a "win" but that doesn't mean we should go out and make a bunch of hanguns that resemble Type 2 Phasers, you know?

i dunno, i just see nerds go ooooh and aaaah every time one gets announced or hinted at. i remember the tears they wept over the microsoft courier (despite it being never being anything more than a demo render that was years away from ever being a shippable product)

It's one of those designs that just won't go away no matter how many times actual UX people go "this is a loving stupid idea" or how many times regular people :effort: them?

their sizzle reel was "onenote, but magic", which was compelling and wholly unrealistic

Microsoft Edge: Making the web better through more open source collaboration

Joe Belfiore

For the past few years, Microsoft has meaningfully increased participation in the open source software (OSS) community, becoming one of the world’s largest supporters of OSS projects. Today we’re announcing that we intend to adopt the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility for our customers and less fragmentation of the web for all web developers.
