I’m an American too, but the controversy over simply allowing the UK to change its mind was that it would open the door to brinksmanship behavior from other countries (and the UK again the next time it gets a conservative government). Kind of like how Trump has permanently damaged the US’s ability to enter treaties or agreements by unilaterally canceling them over specious reasons.
