I'm pissed that I can't find details but I distinctly remember someone (I think it was Krugman) making fun of him because he had a plan that would have diverted payroll taxes from social security into private retirement accounts that would have invested in the market, but still be controlled by SS. However after analyzing this plan after several decades the US government would control a majority of the stock market lmfao

Groovelord Neato
Dec 6, 2014

quote:

The Ryan Social Security plan would have allowed the average worker to shift about half of their contributions to Social Security into a private account, or about 6.4 percent of their earnings. These funds would then be invested into a mix of stocks and bonds until the worker retired, at which point the money in this account would be used to purchase an annuity.

There were many hiccups with this proposal, including the fact that it would have blown a $280 billion hole in the funds available for current retirees — a hole that would need to be filled in each year with additional taxes. The biggest unintended consequence, however, was that it would have achieved something the Communist Party of the United States of America could have never imagined in its wildest dreams.

It turns out that, if you take 6.4 percent of every worker’s paycheck who participates in this program, you wind up with a whole lot of money. In fact, you wind up with so much money that, if you invest these funds in stocks and bonds, the sheer mass of these investments will eventually push all other investors out of the market. As Dylan Matthews explains, under Ryan’s Social Security plan, “investments in the stock and bond markets would skyrocket such that by 2050, every single stock or bond in the United States would be owned by a Social Security account. This would mean that the portfolio managers at the Social Security Administration would more or less control the entire means of production in the United States.”

Russia's "strategy" is to just throws buckets and buckets of poo poo at us. Don't waste your time trying to decipher meaning from the shapes in the poo poo splatter.

This is kind of like claiming Pepsi or any other media campaign just throws poo poo around. I mean facially it can be kind of confusing as to Pepsi would pay Nicki Minaj to dance while holding a cola can. However if you stop to think about the grand marketing strategy that it is apart of, you can start to see the logic of it. If you've never watched RT, they frequently make a point of attacking neoconservatism. Neoconservatism BAD is one of their favorite talking points, which makes sense given Russia has good reasons not to like an ideology which supports aggressive American foreign interventions.

If you pay attention its not that hard to recognize specific talking points that get repeated over and over. Its real obvious for example when there's a mass shooting or something and every Republican talking head repeats the exact same stock phrases and responses, usually they get lists of arguments they are instructed to use so that the party can present consistent messaging.

In the case of Russian propaganda, you'll often first see a new talking point appear on Russia Today, and then be reproduced on their many satellite news sites and twitter sock puppets. So for example over the summer Russia sold most of its US treasury notes, and shortly afterwards I noticed tons of articles appear in sources like zerohedge and sputnik about "de-dollarization," how all the world is going to abandon the dollar as the main unit of international exchange. It's pretty clear Russia was pushing this specific message. Don't know if it showed up in twitter because I don't use twitter. The essential message remains the same, the world is abandoning the dollar, but the framing often changes, with the significance of the act shifting from a moralistic blow against US hegemony to sound investment advice regarding where to park wealth. The framing is the hook that gets people to take notice and then the message is subtly repeated in each new context.

I think its interesting to try and parse out where narratives originate, who is responsible for repeating them, and what their motivation is in doing so. Russia makes the task more interesting than clumsy propagandists like Saudi Arabia, but rightwing-super-pacs are also pretty good about disguising their messaging.

Yeah, it's always this "NO ONE could have seen this coming!" even though plenty of people saw it coming and were shouting down as being "unserious", and the fact they will continue to make their six figure paychecks and write articles and appear on national tv and continue to be wrong over and over for their entire careers without zero consequences ever.

just so we're all clear on this, if he'd reported the transactions to the FEC this would be perfectly legal*

he did not, because ten days before the election, reporters would have gone "wait, a hundred and fifty thousand dollars funneled through the GOP candidate's personal lawyer to a porn star? that's pretty interesting! Let's look into it!"

and so he engaged in conspiracy to commit a campaign finance crime

I mean, rand herself said:

"The same moral principles and considerations apply to the issue of accepting social security, unemployment insurance or other payments of that kind. It is obvious, in such cases, that a man receives his own money which was taken from him by force, directly and specifically, without his consent, against his own choice. Those who advocated such laws are morally guilty, since they assumed the “right” to force employers and unwilling co-workers. But the victims, who opposed such laws, have a clear right to any refund of their own money—and they would not advance the cause of freedom if they left their money, unclaimed, for the benefit of the welfare-state administration."
