I wonder if the west actually can do anything about bitcoin. England is turbo hosed (lol), Australia can't keep a leader in power for a single term without immediately supplanting them with someone else, France is also turbo hosed, and America is seemingly about to impeach a president. Like, every ~major~ western nation is in actual shambles and no one seems to be really caring or noticing? How is bitcoin going to have it's disastrous negative environmental effects properly investigated and dealt with at a regulatory level if the countries that need to take action are busy eating themselves for fun. Or am I overhyping how much self-eating those countries are doing?

McGiggins posted:Or am I overhyping how much self-eating those countries are doing? Maybe. The reason why government departments in the UK and Australia have a head who is separate from the minister holding the portfolio is for stability, so changes of leader or changes of government shouldn't really affect the functioning of the various departments responsible for the environment. Some of those organisations aren't federal anyway - they're state or local government. I do wonder how many people mining Bitcoin have had their homes raided because police suspected a grow op based on the electricity consumption.

See I had never considered that. How easy would it be to set up a bunch of pcs that have a theoretical equal power load to your grow op and just leave em idling. Why no officer, I'm not mining weeds, I'm mining butts.

I just finished reading Red Moon by Kim Stanley Robinson, a good book slightly spoiled by the inclusion of blockchain nonsense, a subplot was this kind of socialist revolution putting all your money into a thing called carboncoin which represents carbon taken out of the environment and can only be used for subsistence goods, which caused the nationalization of the banks.

I don't know if we've said this before: butt-coin https://www.butt-coin.com/ "Is Bitcoin too volatile? $200, $2,000, $20,000, back to $10,000, up to $12,000, back to $9,000! Who has the stomach for that? With BUTT-Coin, there are no fluctuating, plunging prices. BUTT-Coin is $2 per coin today, tomorrow, and forever! Now that's a price you can depends on! Imagine the look on your arrogant friend's face who bought Bitcoin at "only $2,000" and you tell him you paid...yup...TWO DOLLARS for genuine BUTT-Coin. Boy is he going to feel like a donkey, and not only that, you can buy more Butt-Coin any time at the SAME PRICE! " Hopefully soon butt-coin will be worth more.

Hurra, Tether is now the 4th most "valuable" bitcoin and all bitcoins combined are very close to breaking $100B in "market cap" according to Coinmarketcap. Simultaneously, the two bcashes are both storming forward trying to get the highest number of the ranking, both breaking the $80 floor and one being below Litecoin.

This is a company they spun up to distance themselves from it but will not ever exist without Razer. It fails? Oh well, that was part of the investment budget, of which we expect only about a 10% hit rate anyway. It succeeds? Then they sell it for a large return on their seed money.
