Actually true. The "always be growing" nature of publicly traded corporations is unsustainable in general, and generally does not mesh well with gaming, especially online gaming. Every single publicly traded games company will eventually fall in the same way, because there simply is no way to continuously top yourself and not be predatory as gently caress. Games simply take too long and too much effort to make good.

I guess people should make games for free. Nobody needs to be paid for their work, after all. Things that don't make money should just be kept alive to keep people happy, no matter who needs to be fed!

Fuck the DH
Capitalism is what enables people to take high risk moves, which often benefits society.

The problem comes when you apply a just world theory to how the winners and losers are chosen, and believe the losers need to feel the consequences of their losing to prevent irresponsibility. When that happens, risk shrinks and low-risk reward is all you see. Like what’s happening everywhere right now.

Motherfuckers will make crazy rear end video games for you if you can tell them they won’t starve or die in debt if it fails.

Maybe unchecked capitalism causes a lot of problems in our society and the world, and also it's a bad idea to stake your loving life on playing video games when you know that opportunity could dissolve at any moment?

For one thing, yes.

For another thing, the reasons Esports is not entirely a reasonable or sustainable idea for your sole and primary source of income has kind of been covered. I'm not saying "LOL gently caress those idiots", and most people aren't saying that. I would like to know what the alternative is though, charity e-sports jobs? Guaranteed video gaming career? Having a job and then suddenly not having one sucks. It doesn't matter that esports was never going to be a 40 year career with a full retirement plan. A huge portion of the population currently have jobs that will also likely not have those things. Tons more have jobs that do but are on the chopping block within the next decade or so because they will be redundant or obsolete. The people defending the esports players are specifically responding to the people who are laughing at them.

As for your question, the alternative for them is the same for literally every other person who currently has a job that might not exist at some point in the near future. Hope you can figure something else out without dying in poverty.

lol at trying to come off as knowledgeable with regards to economic discussions and then blatantly straw-manning an argument from a 3 sentence quote.

Me: The status quo of required constant growth is unsustainable and the result is the constant failure of game companies.
You: Yeah games should totallly be made for free and no one should be paid for their work! Get a load of this guy and his socialism, am I right guys? :smug:

In case you misread that too, I am saying your post was really, really bad.

It seems really important for some to believe that these players had literally no life goals or aspirations outside of playing video games just because they expressed pain over losing the job they were currently invested in (and getting actually paid by.) Yes, some of them dropped out of school to play games for money. I wonder why a human being would choose to make money doing something they like right now as opposed to spending money on an investment that gambles whether or not it might pay off with a job they might not like in the future, if it results in any job at all within a reasonable period of time.

Well everyone's got opinions. For example, I think your opinion on them makes you look way more foolish and immature than their decision to get paid for doing something they were passionate about (or something they found easy, because I am sure some probably did it without loving the game.) Ultimately it doesn't matter, but at the end of the day, they look maybe a little foolish, and you just look like a mean spirited douche.

People moved across the country and signed leases based on what a Blizzard employee personally told them(that they had a job). I don't see how calling other people idiots for trying to enjoy their life fits in here. I haven't seen any of them doing anything ridiculous, just expressing sadness that their dreams just got offered to them and then snatched away at the last moment by a man sitting on a cart full of moneybags.

If that is the case then what even is the point of bringing up their choice in jobs with esports in the first place? Or do people seriously believe that every college aged person is fully employed in their permanent career before they even graduate, complete with their own homes?

Yeah it's pretty loving stupid to go "lol nerdy morons trying to make a living off video games" when that's been an honest to god career path instead of some lovely joke for like a decade now. People in the HGC were making livelihoods off the HGC for three years. It's not like people packed up their lives on a pipe dream promise of "maybe Heroes esports will be a thing", because HGC WAS a thing, until Blizzard decided at the drop of a hat with no forewarning that it was not.

Honestly, that's the part of this that bothers me. It's not that Blizzard killed off HGC, because they're a company and it's not their obligation to support something that they can't possibly financially justify to provide welfare for esports players. It's that this decision was made on basically the drop of a hat and sprung on all of these people with no forewarning or preparation time. If you're informed a couple months in advance of the end of your current season or whatever that the next HGC might not be happening, you have some time to plan your finances and figure out what you're going to do from here forward. But as far as anyone was aware as recently as a month ago all systems were go.
