I needed the article to point out to me that this is a USB drive that looks like a floppy Looking forward to the maps, I don't think I finished his last map yet. I think I'll be going for the free tier though! The only thing that vaguely interests me out of the stuff you can pay for is the thing that they're not revealing - his head on a spike - since I assume it's a reference to the same thing in Doom 2. However, the $166 price tag tells me that this is only for people who are huge fans of John Romero and that I'm not one of them, just a fan of DOOM.

Circa 1990, a friend from school and I, after about a week's worth of experiments and false starts, finally managed to get our copies of 688 Attack Sub to talk to each other over our crappy old 2400 baud modems, so we could torpedo each other out of the water in our own little World War III. vs. (Note: my screen didn't look as nice as that, since at the time I was still making do with a crappy old EGA adapter in my 8086. My friend had a snazzy 20-MHz 286 with VGA.)

The ISP where I worked that year was well into the 33.6 USR Couriers at that point. Not that my house's lovely phone lines out in the boonies could support them or anything. My parents were getting by on 28.8 (couldn't manage 56K) until like 3 years ago (Now they have satellite or something, it never did get any better)

We got a 9600 USR external modem but our local AOL dial-in numbers were only 2400 for a good few months afterwards. My buddy had a 14.4 and Prodigy had a dial-in that supported it, so we would download TV show themesong .WAVs on his computer because of the immense speed advantage.

Who else had their first online gaming experience in the Microsoft Gaming Zone? Had a blast playing Age of Empires 1, Flight Simulator 98, Midtown Madness (Trial Version) and Fighter Ace back in 1998-2000. Of course, on 56kbps dial-up connection.

I played Rogue Spear and Jedi Knight on the Zone. JK multiplayer left something to be desired because it was always idiots who insisted that you weren't allowed to use guns. Jedi Outcast was even worse when it came along. You'd get into a server and it would be full of doofuses who wanted you to bow before engaging people in combat, or shitheads roleplaying Harry Potter. I got kicked out of an RS game on the Zone once because I got extremely lucky and took most of the terrorist team out with a sniper rifle on the airplane map. I was around 10, and probably absolutely terrible, but one lucky round and I get tossed.
