I definitely gently caress with the new school of trap but those originators just don't sound good to me. The beats are even more minimalist and electronic sounding than modern trap which gets boring to me. I do appreciate the influence though, especially on the Lord Finnese type flows that you hear on every song now. Edit: maybe beats lacking because not much 808? Just doesn't have the same bounce that I expected from modern trap beats denzelcurrypower fucked around with this message at 14:57 on Dec 17, 2018 |

Same deal with early Gucci. In general though I'd say GUcci gets by with some of the most basic, least interesting rhyming schemes and flow out of any popular rapper. Nearly every verse sounds like he's reciting a nursery rhyme. The odd time he changes it up but it's rare. And I'm not just an old head either I like a lot of the new SoundCloud/mumble/emo rappers nowadays as well as old school east/west hip hop.

Kinda like even the most prestigious directors make the shittiest most commercialized films every once in a while. Either to make money or trade off to allow them to make their own real movie in exchange

Same deal with early Gucci. Mystic Stylez is one of my favorite albums so I’m probably biased, but I think you’re being a little unfair. The rapping is a product of its time for sure, but there’s some absolutely great verses on that album. Like, in both lyrical content and flow it’s technically better than most modern trap music. If you don’t like the 90s Memphis sound it’s obviously quite different from the current stuff though. The grimy, raw “unnatural” sound is a product of how the beats were made on tapes rather than digitally like modern rap music, but imo it has a great vibe that has been reused by lots of modern sound cloud rapper but never really replicated quite as well. If you haven’t yet, check out Lil Ugly Manes album Mr Thug Isolation for imo the best modern homage to this style of rap. Might give you a different perspective With Gucci this was a conscious decision. At some point he stopped writing his raps to instead free style whatever. Check out the Burrprint 3 to hear him in his prime. I don’t disagree his output post prison has been pretty bad though. For peak modern Gucci (my god how is this tape 6 years old now I feel old) the first Trap God is a good example of why he’s a legend. He had a really big role in developing the new Atlanta sound and bridging the gap between traditional southern trap music (I.e ti, Jeezy) and modern trap. The amount of talented rappers and producers he’s directly responsible for finding and putting on is crazy

Appreciate the info on Gucci and 3 6 Mafia. I'll give their stuff another listen with this stuff in mind. It's nice to get some discussion going instead of a million downvotes like I get in Reddit. I haven't heard much old Gucci was mostly referring to his new stuff. And I certainly don't doubt the influence on modern trap I just meant from a listening perspective I can't be damned to put it on, Gucci only worth it for features now. Something about that slow delivery with predictable rhymes just sounds off to me. Example - he only uses maybe 2 different rhythmic motifs in his entire flow and the lyrics suck all that's left is the beat which is average https://youtu.be/Eu13Mmfxctc Edit the hook is good though denzelcurrypower fucked around with this message at 06:14 on Dec 18, 2018 |

Same deal with early Gucci. You're actually right about Gucci for the most part (although compared to a lot of the new soundcloud dudes he's basically SLR-style Lupe) but don't know why you really comparing him with three 6, who were never really known for trap stuff. The Memphis sound from Mystic Stylez era is basically entirely different (and the more crunk stuff from their later stuff is to fwiw). That said I don't think he's listened to for his pure lyrical prowess, and even though I think he's average at best rapping he's had some solid songs (although nowhere near as many as his fans would have you believe). Also also for the old three 6 stuff a lot of that sound is intentional as it's supposed to be mimicking horror movies and whatnot. Unlike a lot of what gets labeled horrorcore which has some surface similarities, most of the horror tropes are meant to be a commentary on street life vs. the more explicit horror-for-horror sake of dudes like Necro or w/e.

Also Danny Brown again showing he's one of the best out for sure. I wonder what direction his next full project will take, cause I don't think Atrocity Exhibition did well, so I could see him going much more into his festival-style stuff like he had on the back half of Old.
