I just wet a rag with some warm water and add a little dish soap, no reason to go fancy with cleaning or blast your phone with water directly.

The regular phone glass should prevent the vast majority of scratches unless you are regularly keeping the screen around metal or sand. I have virtually none on my launch X without being overly careful. And yes, a big negative IMO is you're changing how the screen feels to interact with.

Dunno where they came from, but my old one has quite a few of these after a few years so it's something I want to avoid for the new phone.

A tempered glass guard doesn’t change the feel and protects against impacts that would shatter your screen, so they are a smart investment. I have had good quality and poo poo quality ones, and none caused trouble with the touchscreen for me, and I have issues with skin conductivity due to chemical burns as a toddler making my skin very dry.

eSIM is awesome. I travel to Ireland a lot from the USA and usually have to fumble with my bag-o-SIM cards on the plane to my Irish card to avoid getting hosed by AT&T for international data. It was always worth it because for €20 I get unlimited data in Ireland and 6GB in the EU for 28 days. Great. The downside was that i would miss any calls to my American number until I got back home and more importantly wouldn’t get texts from the few applications that don’t support a proper TOTP app for 2FA.

But now I have best of both worlds! Data and primary phone activated via my Irish sim but also can get texts and be alerted for missed calls for my American number that I can then call back for free via google voice.

Question though - if I’m on WiFi and my eSIM reports it’s connected via AT&T WiFi, I can call and text from that line all I want for free right? Since it connects via the internet and not an international roaming cellular network?

Probably, but you're better off asking the AT&T thread (or AT&T themselves).

Yeah based on what I read on the AT&T forums anything you on AT&T wireless is free / as if you were in the US - so you can receive any call or send any text. But you still pay for outbound international calls, which makes sense.

iTunes is saying I've got 20gb of 'Documents and Data'. Is this the new 'Other' where it might as well be garbage and needs a full restore to clear out? I'm travelling in 2 days and want to sync some stuff to my phone to watch so the more space the better, but at the same time I don't really want to go through all the rigmarole of rolling out a restore in case something like my bank app fucks up and I don't have time to resolve it before I go.

Just had a brand new battery installed in my 6 and feel like it's still draining quicker than expected when idle, so it's gonna get a restore at some point at least.

WithoutTheFezOn
Aug 28, 2005
Oh no
First thing I would do is, on the phone, go to Settings - general - iPhone storage and check the app list, to see how much of the 20GB is legit and maybe see if a couple apps are big offenders. Tapping an app will break down app size and “documents and data”.

“Other” still exists, on iOS devices at least. Seems to be close to what is listed as “system” way at the bottom of that app list.

Yeah, I'd looked through that list before in case there was something obvious eating up a ton. I added up everything that was 100mb+ in Docs/Data and hit 6.5gb. Tons of apps were under 10mb in usage, so even with lots of little things added up it stlil feels like there's only about 1/2 in use compared to whats being reported.

Photos use up <1gb as I have a 50gb iPhoto account and it's told to store everything there. No music as I have Match and do everything over the air. Have a handful of podcasts and some files in VLC that total 2gb but that's the only 'big' stuff. The bar in iOS is calculated differently to iTunes too it seems, with Apps supposedly using about 1/3 of the capacity (so I guess it's the Apps + Docs/Data from iTunes) and Other using up about 1/6, and the entry at the bottom says that's 11gb. Not sure how big that is usually these days? But I think I'm a minor update behind so maybe a chunk of that is install data, so I'll bring it up to date and see if that reduces stuff down by a few gb.

E: ran the update which claimed only to be using 500mb anyway, and now the breakdown shows this. Excellent work Apple.

There's no harm in trying out a screen protector, they cost very little and if you hate it they come off very easily

You should use a slightly damp cotton or microfiber cloth to clean your phone, as soap will gradually degrade the screen coating(s). This is right there in Apple's official advice https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207123. As I'm sure we all hate that late stage of a phone screen's life where it is just constantly oily, you should probably listen to them to avoid that oiliness as long as possible

In my experience, if you're signed out of itunes on the phone, any stored music on your device will end up lumped into the "other" category.

This assumes you keep music local. Once you sign in all that storage flips over to the media label.

There *shouldnt* be any music on here, but maybe when I moved over to match some got stuck. I’ll sign in and sign off of iTunes and see if that frees up anything. There really shouldn’t be much on here at all to be honest. A restore is probably the best path but I can get away with the free space I have for the next few weeks at least.

Yeah, it's not going actually remove anything, it'll just deallocate it and lump it in "other".

I was under the impression that "other" was clawed back as needed by iOS. What is driving the need to janitor your phone? Has your phone been having issues from this?

iCloud or wifi sync between devices is fine so long as it's got decent encryption.

No need to ask why I need the app. You know exactly why.

I am upgrading from an iPhone 6 to an XR so i'm a bit out of the loop as to how drop proof phones are these days.
I currently have a bumper case on mine which seems like the best combination of protection versus not hiding the entire phone behind plastic or rubber, but since bumper cases seem a little rare I was just curious if I needed one, before buying online and dealing with international shipping.

It's gotten better over the years but is still pretty bad, and it's something that seems to completely break at least once every number release beta cycle which leads to the fun of clearing 2 gigs of stuff you're actually using to install the next update.

Something Awful, so easy even a spaceman can do it!

There used to be a program that would “clean up” your iPhone storage. Is there anything like that out there still?

I also noticed the massive amount of “other” data on my phone as well.

Looking through apps, all of my music from Amazon music gets placed in the “other” category. Combine that with your system data, it would be easy for “other” to reach 20 GBs.

But doing nothing other than checking this app and going through storage info has now led my Apps category to increase and Other to decrease.

Ha, transatlantic flights and staying at places where the only entertainment might be UK OTA TV, so always useful to have a bunch of shows and stuff to hand. I still have a decent amount of free space so all is good, as long as the phone isn’t just permanently storing crap it doesn’t need to and is letting up the space when needed, that’s fine.

Is there a way to get rid of the word Siri suggestions but keep the frequently used/ recent apps when using spotlight? I use it quite a bit but the word suggestions populate a second or two delayed and often I mistakenly hit those instead of the app I intended to. So far I am only able to disable both by turning off Siri suggestions for spotlight.
