Any suggestions between using the Scatter Blaster or Blaze Javelin as a primary weapon? I'm getting ready to start installations and didn't want to waste resources trying out both.

Scatter blaster is basically a shotgun, and is good. Blaze Javelin can oneshot sentinels if you get all the upgrades, but waiting for it to wind up is annoying when you’re getting shot.

The Blaze Javelin is really bad for out-and-out close-quarters scrapping, and is primarily useful for sniping, if you care about that sort of thing. A fully upgraded Scatter Blaster will absolutely mangle anything at very close range and is reasonably good for indiscriminate saturation fire out to a moderate distance, so if you're only picking one, I'd go with the Scatter Blaster. It's much more useful for when you unexpectedly piss off the Sentinels and are not willing to just drop everything and run before you've finished gathering up whatever resource you're after.

Especially once your HP and shields are upgraded to the point where you can shrug off most damage sources, there's really little reason to use anything other than the Scatter Blaster (other than shooting down birds that refuse to let you scan them). A Scatter Blaster at max output will take down a door in 5 hits, and kill anything short of a Walker or the most enormous of fauna in 2 hits. Why even equip grenades at that point, really.

Unrelated, but I really wish they'd de-couple ship inventory slots from ship components. I'd kind of like to be able to fly around in a ship I like the look of without feeling that I'm crippling myself by using something that caps out at 19 slots even at S rank.

Or at least let you move where the components are installed.

Yes, unironically. I use both. Javelin is phenomenally useful for sniping. You can one shot sentinels, even the armored ones, with a single javelin hit to the eye. Similarly, once you strip armor from a walker with the scatter, you can Shoot The Weak Point For Massive Damage with the Javelin.

This tiny loving spot. Right here. Upper left corner of the little horseshoe shaped panel on the front of the Walkers. 6100 damage a pop from a javelin, at least, but even at point blank range, a scatter blaster will not hit it except by accident.

Arguably, it can be more efficient to just blast a walker down with the scatter from under it regardless, but I find this a little easier and less random.

:geno: Yes, it's like a lava lamp.

A walker is a two shot kill with a plasma grenade though; once in the upper legs knocks all the armor of, one in the face to kill it. I have a blaze javelin in my tool, but I rarely ever use it.

Once you have a ton of upgrades the only enemies that remain remotely dangerous are sentinel super frigates and those only show up if you *want* them to show up.

That's fair, but I've honestly ended up shooting myself in the face with those drat things more often than not.

There's combat in this game? I thought this was the "build, tear down, and rebuild your base to make it better" game.

I only bother with sentinels anymore if I can get nanites or delicious crafting ingredients from missions. Any reason to hope for some more pvp, jank as it would be?

Is there a limit to how many freighters I can have in my fleet?

Thanks to a trio of S-tier Scanner upgrades, I'm having enough cash to start buying them up, and I'm wondering if I'll hit a wall soon.

Gonna start having to craft freight fuel full-time to support these guys.

Last I checked, you are capped at 30 freighters in your fleet.

If you want lots of fuel, the least onerous way I've found to get it in bulk is to buy tritum from space stations in rich / high supply systems (so you can get 4k+ at a time) and use refiners to break down dihydrogen jelly into di-hydrogen. Both are super cheap, and this spares you from having to gather mountains of that poo poo yourself.

Technically you can get infinite di-hydrogen by turning it into jelly and back repeatedly, but this process takes much longer than just buying more jelly.

Frigates, surely. You can only have one Freighter.

Whoops yeah frigates I mean.

Also you should cap them out because a super freighter with a halo of 30 frigates looks sweet as hell.

Eh, what else are you going to do with your on-board refiners.

The Zombie Guy

Yeah I messed up there, frigates =/= freighters.

So I have the portable refiner right now, how do I get one installed in my capital ship?

(btw, do any of y'all bother with re-naming your ships? I've been scouring my memory for spaceship names from games/books/movies)

If you press up when you're in the main area you get the build menu which lets you put down rooms and the big fuelless refiners along with specialist terminals and filling the bridge with glowing cubes you kidnapped from a planet.

I renamed my super freighter Savage Garden because it hosts a grow-op that's worth 50-100 million units a day if I craft it all into stuff.

Of course I haven't bothered with it for months now because I have more money that I can possibly spend.

I also have a hauler named Hangar Queen because it's sole reason for existing is to sit on my freighter and serve as additional inventory space.

That's a good idea, I hadn't considered it.

My freighter is the Pillar of Autumn, and my frigates so far are Defiant, Marauder, Nostromo, and Out of Band II.

Basically everything on this planet was those things, but mostly on the ground.

Also on another planet, ran into this hamster/falcon/turtle thing.

Also, is there any way to remotely delete your current base to start a new one?
Mine is back on my starting planet and is nothing more than a wooden box with a roof and I'd like to make one somewhere else without having to go all the way back.

You can have unlimited bases, just make a new one and forget about the first, especially since it doesn't sound like it was a big resource investment. If you want to clean it up you should be able to teleport back to it, delete it, and then teleport back to where you just were from the local station.

The tallest ones WOULD NOT SCAN at all, no matter where I tried to do it.

Speaking of scanning, what do you need to do to get more units from scanning?

S-grade upgrades on your scanner should increase units.

Buy S-rank scanner upgrades, you can have up to 3 at once. Make sure you install them right next to the scanner itself and each other to get the adjacency bonus.

I did this, and I now get around 60k units for scanning plants, and between 120k and 350k for animals. Kicks rear end.

Still only get 200 per mineral though. What the Hell guys?

Thundarr

Minerals are always just 200 no matter what, and can't even be renamed or uploaded. Literally the only people in the universe who care about minerals are the mission npcs on stations and sometimes your base scientist.

With the last big update where 90% of everything stopped being named Yukovsite it looked like all minerals with the same name across the universe could only be scanned once anyway, though I only spent a few hours playing post-patch.

Yes, if you apply it to your tool you can't remove it. Even if you have an incredibly lovely tool though, a couple S rank scanner upgrades will make a huge difference in how fast you make money. You can always buy more upgrades once you find a better tool.

I finally understand everything there is to know about axes!
Nanites aren't hard to get if you're constantly checking the mission board in stations. The biggest challenge is just finding a vendor who sells S Rank modules for the scanner which is just jumping around a little until you find one.

True, although that's limited to visible inventory. The multi tool only has one screen to look at, but starships and exopacks have two: tech slots and the general inventory.

It's possible to stack three s-class upgrades in each. Three in tech, three in general, for a total of six, say, hyperdrive upgrades for your explorer, or mobility upgrades for your exopack. Ofc, this comes at the cost of general inventory, so it's only super useful on high end ships you'd want to be investing s-class upgrades into anyway.

So as someone who has around 20 hours played and just got my freighter what upgrades should I be getting and spending my nanites on? I'm mostly exploring at the moment.

It took me 20 hours to get a freighter because I've been exploring a lot of the first 3 solar systems and got a 41 slot B-class hauler that I've been fixing up as well. Recently realized it's better to find abandoned buildings with eggs, grab the eggs to sell and buy the materials by hanging in a station and talking to NPCs who land. Getting 1000s of chromatic metal sucks otherwise.

In my opinion, scanner, mining laser, life support, jetpack, plasma cannon, whatever weapon your ship has, and freighter engines (which you build anyway, so you don't really need to set aside nanites for them)

if you find a planet with activated cadmium, emeril, or indium then throw a base on it. i've never found anything you can build with those minerals because they don't double as their non-activated versions, but you can refine them to 2x, 3x, and 4x chromatic metal respectively. sending frigates out on industrial missions will also reward these metals in quantities that will essentially drown you in chromatics.
