Federal crime doesn't mean "super serious crime" it means a crime which violates a federal law or falls under the purview of the powers the federal government relegates to itself, which mostly have to do with interstate commerce. Murder, for instance, can be a federal crime, but usually isn't; when it is, it's because the murder was of a federal or court official, or involved the drug trade, or because the suspects crossed state lines, or met some other special criteria.

That's also why they had to get Al Capone on tax evasion, and not all those murders and robberies he committed.

Because of that it's not crazy, on its face, that lynching wasn't a federal crime already, although there are good reasons why it should be.

Can't wait until SCOTUS strikes down the law in a 5-4 decision. It's worth it for the symbolism of Trump having to sign it into law though.

Does the law reclassify lynching as terrorism? Because it should.

It's actually a problem because the Fed never rose interest rates during the "good years" and so now we have no leverage to get the economy started back up if it starts to falter.

Why also include lynching as an independent crime? Did I miss something where the poster argued against hate crimes in general?

Also, robbing a bank specifically isn't a distinct crime, is it? I'd thought it was covered under Grand Theft, which would apply to any robbery of significant value.

It depends. There is a federal statute for bank robbery - 18 U.S. Code § 2113 - Bank robbery and incidental crimes. Some states, like Texas, just classify it as robbery. You can see the difference in how some states handle laws when looking at how simply the Texas statute on Robbery is compared to the federal bank robbery statute

It's another rural poverty piece, but this one hits home as Dayton Ohio (the city featured) is where I spent part of my childhood. It hits the same notes as any other piece (white flight caused by racism, companies closing shop to please wall-street, rampant opioid addiction, jobs coming back but now they pay $10 an hour and 0 benefits versus the $35 jobs + pension of old.

Still, it's worth a watch if anything as a reminder of how hollow our economy actually is.

I think it begs the question, should we be deploying an American army division anywhere in the world we think a genocide is going to happen? He's a free-speech absolutist who often points out how specific targeted actions end up backfiring against the oppressed.

In this instance, he's agreeing with Silver that corporations' boycotting advertising on cable-news shows has the effect of turning those outlets into mouthpieces for corporate propaganda, lest those shows become the targets of advertising boycotts.

As an example, when was the last time you saw a cable-news show do a deep dive into the cost of prescription drugs or subcontracted military spending? Two weeks ago from never, because these outlets are beholden to corporate advertising and their messaging.

The problem with this line of reasoning is that corporations already use their power to suppress the views of leftists and the marginalized more generally, so it's a de facto argument towards throwing your hands up in the air and doing nothing and somehow this will make the corporations treat you nicer because now they see we must follow the rules and be fair and all.
