The social change taking place in Saudi Arabia has undeniably brought joy and new opportunities to many citizens, but they come with an implicit threat: indulge in the fun, just don’t challenge the leadership. Women can drive after a decades-long ban was lifted, gender segregation is dissolving and cafes are filled with music, previously deemed immoral in the conservative Islamic kingdom. At the same time, any space for freedom of expression has vanished. In its place, an aggressive form of nationalism has risen, venerating Prince Mohammed as the steward of progress rather than the brash leader blamed by the CIA for Khashoggi’s murder in October. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLFtJGnRehU

Maybe Al Qaeda will gas itself again in some futile attempt to get the US to bomb another Syrian airfield. Glad Trump got this foreign policy point right.

They can cut a deal with Damascus but they're not going to like it. Still better than letting Turkey come in and hand over the canton to Salafist Beavis & Butthead.

Any chance the Kurds get any kind of autonomy in a deal with Assad or has the time for that passed as well?

Azathoth posted:Any chance the Kurds get any kind of autonomy in a deal with Assad or has the time for that passed as well? Without American troops standing around, Damascus basically holds all the cards. My guess is they'll only want status quo ante, but waiting until Turkey invades isn't in their interest either. Maybe Damascus will let them keep their worker councils so long as they kick up some tax money, but I doubt it.

i cant imagine erdogan is really stupid enough to invade and essentially annex another 2 million very angry kurds who have had experience fighting for the last 7 years but i dunno. in afrin theyve been essentially practicing ethnic cleansing but that only works when the kurds have the rest of rojava to flee to.

Erdogan is facing a recession and while a war is a good distraction, trying to take that territory is going to be pretty bloody and costly. At least in theory; it seems like Turkey's tried to collect as many Sunni jihadists that they could probably use as cannon fodder against the Kurds. And continue to resettle white helmets in the conquered territory.

I'm not sure how to ask this, so pardon my inarticulate phrasing, but wasn't this always what was going to happen once Russia went all in on Assad and the non-Kurd rebels in the east went all clusterfuck. Like, the US wasn't ever going to fight Assad on behalf of the Kurds and everyone knows it. At some point, it was always gonna come down to Assad's troops rolling into Rojava and the only question was ever whether the Kurds could stop him independently and that door closed hard when Russia got involved. I'm freely admitting I could be wrong, so please correct me if I am.
