Ah yes, the "things not on the desktop do not exist" syndrome. Making the desktop a store for anything at all was a mistake.

The Fool posted:If it's demoted, you can use local admin again. And it is trivial to reset if you have any sort of bootable media. Yeah that's what I said, but it turns out it didn't get demoted, just removed from the domain and rebooted so it lost it's trust and wouldn't let any domain accounts log in. I suggested NTpassword Cracker but he just cracked it with a baseball bat and built a new one Edit: nevermind. apparently the demotion failed and that caused the domain lockout. Man, imagine 'accidentally' activating hide desktop icons option in group policies on your last day at a place.

I wrote a PowerShell script for deleting local profiles off of conference room computers to keep the hard drives from filling up (the workstations download the profile at initial login and keep it updated for quick access). Just sticking wildcards into that script instead of the conference room PC names on your way out would make for an interesting day for networking.

So I'm in the middle of my 4th week at and realized that since a) it's almost all DevOps, b) I haven't have time to read SA, and, c) I don't do any loving support anymore, that I was up to like 400+ unread replies in this thread. I don't even remember the last time I saw more than 10 unread.

Do you just blanket delete all local profiles on logout or do you target a specific age?

kensei posted:You want to share that script? The basis should be Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_UserProfile to get all the profiles on the machine, then filter the profiles in some way, and once you have a set of profiles to delete, pass them to Remove-WmiObject. If you want to get the AD account for a profile, you can use Get-ADUser -Filter { SID -eq $profile.SID } to look it up.

Microsoft has added localuser management to powershell as well: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/microsoft.powershell.localaccounts/remove-localuser?view=powershell-5.1

I researched this when we were having massive issues with literally hundreds of profiles left over from nurses etc. logging on shared workstations, filling up tiny 128 GB SSDs. A script to quickly clean up profiles not used for a long time solves 90% of those issues. As a secondary note, the best way to get the "last used" date for a user profile is to check the modified time of NTUSER.DAT in the root of the profile dir. The Win32_UserProfile object itself can't really be trusted for that, the last use dates can get updated by various Windows updates/other servicing too. Checking the date on NTUSER.DAT generally gets you the last time that profile was genuinely logged on.

I wrote a script that used the Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_UserProfile method but I found that it took forever to run, has that gotten faster over the last couple of years? (I ended up using DelProf2.)

Nah, it's slow, even with SSDs. Don't run it in a context where you will wait for it to finish. (Run it as a scheduled job at night.)
