I had kidney cancer, which chemo and most other common treatments aren't very effective for. Luckily surgery is extremely effective for that. It cost my insurance over $100,000, and that's insurance I only had because I was too hurt to work and got covered under a parent's plan via the ACA. The insurance contested it and there was a week long period where I thought I was going to be in debt $93k.

No, they were just contesting all but $4k of what they said they'd pay before the surgery. I had to cover $3k out of pocket but that was it. Thankfully $3k is my deductible and I got the surgery in January, so i was off the hook for paying for medical treatment the rest of the year. I have to start paying again in a few days though.

I'm lucky enough to have a state job and access to decent insurance but I really want this poo poo improved and sorted out before my kids are old enough to need it on their own. Before this I didnt have any insurance for a good 10 years and just basically hoped I never got hurt. Also, after we get univeral heath care can we loving wrap vision and dental into it too? It's such bullshit.

The healthcare system is so hosed that I'd rather deal with horrible chronic back pain than be in crippling debt from surgery that might make it slightly less so. Good thing I live in a green state, weed helps and is cheap.

I have Medicaid and pay $0 for everything but I'm also extremely poor Wish I had the same coverage but also that I didn't have to worry about making too much money in a year and losing all my benefits

My appendix exploded without me realizing it, and I wound up needing multiple tests, emergency surgery, a week in the hospital with a drain inside me and staple removal afterward. I have corporate insurance, so my bill was $2000. Just after moving here and thus before coverage was a possibility, my girlfriend went to the ER after not being able to hold food or water down for two days. She got one test and some zofran, and was diagnosed with food poisoning and sent home. Her bill was $20,000.

Thanks to our poor educational system and garbage culture most Americans are too dumb or trashy to realize the necessary reforms in order to improve quality of life. The other problem is those reforms won't be easy without a major overhaul of the federal, state, and local governments.

I had cancer and they cut it out and I get regular check ups all for free. Had an MRI the other week for migraine auras just because I could. Again, free.
