Yes. There are a variety of wild HQs for Mechanicum in 30k. All based on the Dominus model, but you can take them in a lot of different directions in terms of wargear and rules.

Earlier, I defended the Holy Trinity stratagem. I still think it's nice and thematic, but I wanted to run some numbers.

As a baseline, against a SPACE MARINE target, a battle sister squad has the following stats:
code:
		%HIT	%WOUND Combined	%DAMAGE Avg. Damage
Bolter 0.66	0.5 0.33 0.11 0.11
Flamer *	0.5 0.5 0.16 0.58
Melta 0.66	0.83 0.55 0.55 1.94*
*inaccurate on a 1 wound target but I don't care enough to modify my spreadsheet because firing meltas at marines isn't exactly the aspect I'm hoping to boost

Adding in a +1 to wound gets you:
code:
		%HIT	%WOUND Combined	%DAMAGE Avg. Damage
Bolter 0.66	0.66 0.44 0.14 0.14
Flamer *	0.66 0.66 0.22 0.77
Melta 0.66	0.83 0.55 0.55 1.94
That's not very impressive. It isn't going to boost the melta damage output at all because its already at max chance to wound. The biggest increase is in the flamer, which I was pitching as the sacrificial weapon to make this work.

I suppose if you had a 15 sister squad intending to pump the bolter damage up, your average damage would be 0.14*12 = 1.68. vs 0.11*14 = 1.54 if you had just taken a storm bolter instead of the flamer. That's ignoring the flamer damage, and the combi-flamer bolter firing at -1, etc, but even with those simplifications its not very compelling considering the cost of the combi-flamer and an 8" range.

Ok, well, can we use it to boost the melta output against high value targets?

Against T8, 3+ targets the melta goes from 1.166 avg damage to 1.55
And against T9, 3+ targets the melta goes from 0.777 to 1.166

Well that's promising! Except in the latter case your average damage is 1.166*2 = 2.33 vs 0.77*3=2.31 if you took a third melta.

I think the problem here is that:
* Flamers are bad and we would only take them to use the stratagem and their range cripples it
* Meltas are good, but you take few per squad and the +1 to wound is seldom going to outweigh +1 melta
* The +1 to wound on bolters is the biggest boost, but it seems really hard to make it effective enough

Maybe there's a way to make it work on retributors with heavy flamers and a combi-melta?

In conclusion: I was wrong and I am sad.

It was gonna be a Imperial Armour book focused around T'au attacking a Forge World. Would have gave the AdMech all their shiny 30k robutts and toys in 40k and a bunch of new animes for the T'au.

But because Forge World has went from standard incompetent to ragingly incompetent in the past year and a half or so, it got shoved so far down the production pipeline it essentially got soft cancelled.

I know it is extremely unlikely but I am still hoping beyond hope that flamers get a buff, something to make them less of a crap shoot, like maybe extra D6 depending on the number of models in the target unit or maybe 2d6 pick the highest, or a minimum number of hits(Like maybe 3 always hit), just something. They used to be the most reliable high hitting weapon in my army and now they're consistently disappointing even in high numbers. For this edition I have way too many flamers(4 10 man squads with 1 combi-flamer, 1 flamer and 1 heavy flamer and that's just my troops) and with plastic sisters coming out in a year or so I just can't bring myself to replace them with the more useful special weapons.

I kinda expected that Stratagem wasn't very good since it would require spreading my melta's or flamers around which don't really do enough damage output on their own to be taken on a 1-2 basis. My thought process is 1 melta won't destroy a tank on it's own even in the best circumstances and due to it's low range is unlikely to get second chance. 2 melta's have a better chance but are still more likely to just cripple a tank while 3 is just the right amount of wiggle room to almost always guarantee a kill. For a while I was thinking of doing a Dominion squad with 4 meltas and 1 combi flamer, 4 melta's wounding high toughness targets on 2-3+ seems like it would be nice but I don't know if it's better than a 5th melta.

It's good to see the actual math of it though. I missed my last game day so I haven't been able to try the new codex. If you have played, how is it? Are the acts more decent than I originally thought? Have you gotten much use out of the other Stratagems or changes in the codex?

Fires of Cyraxus was the pet project of Andy Hoare who now heads Specialist Games. It was meant to be a book focusing on Ad Mech and Tau, but it is likely not happening at this point. He had written most of it in his spare time and the changes from 8th would require a full rewrite of the rules and, depending on how they'd want to frame it, maybe even the background. It's not happening. At least not for a long time.

This has been said a few times on the GW twitch stream by Andy himself, I'm not guessing at anything here. However, I don't understand why the background would need to be re-written as the Imperial Armor books are largely presented as historical texts. There would be no need to accommodate the current state of the setting. Unless they wanted to, of course.

The use of it is to make meltas wound on 3s against T8, which helps Sisters deal with Knights. Best on a Dominion squad with 4 meltas, a combi-flamer Superior and a flag carrier with boltgun. Other than that yeah, it's fine but not really worth building around.

He covers that. Going from 1.166 per melta to 1.55 isnt worth giving up a melta, and since you arent delivering mass bolters it's super not worth it.

Ah yeah I was thinking in the context of Dominions rather than regular Sisters, but I guess in either case you can just take a combi-melta on the Superior instead of a combi-flamer and get same/better output than using the strat.

I'm not sure how to buff flamers - increasing the str/api moves it into heavy flamer territory, and increasing the number of hits would make the weird situation where flamer gets more hits than a heavy flamer. (Unless you also want to buff heavy flamers, which I am cool with, but they are currently in a much better place.) The logical thing is to give them a points drop and/or a dedicated stratagem - a flamer equivalent of Blessed Bolts.

I've got the opposite problem, I have a ton of melta models (and not enough stormbolters), so I tend to take meltas in small squads and use them more like one would use plasma guns against heavy infantry or t5/t6 sub-tank targets. They're kinda too expensive to be used like that, but what can you do.

Today's my game day so I'll let you know! I'm holding off on any commentary on the acts of faith until I play.

That looks loving great, and a whole squad painted to that standard and based on the tabletop will probably earn you occasional compliments because painted mans you put effort into look good.

I generally use less than 8 colors on my rank and file troopers(Cadians):

Brown boots (doubling as brown skin tone.)
Black gun casings and strapping
khaki fatigues
Grey armor plating
Lighter skin tone.
Silver metals
Agrax earthshade equivalent wash

Officers and the eventual plan for everyone which will never happen involve a couple more:
Edge highlight on the armor
Light grey stripes/unit markings
Red chainswords/random details
highlight on the skin (Flesh tone for the caucasion, a separate lighter brown for the dark skintones)
Brass detailing

So 7 paints for rank and file dudes, 12 for doing something fancy on the characters. You do not need a ton of paints to make your dudes look good. I find a good way to tell is to look at the thumbnail image of something on here. If your dude looks good in that it's going to look great on the tabletop.
