Yeah it seems like if you're willing to live below means (I know unfathomable in today's world) then anything over 100k is decent living salary in most places. Yes even DC area, where I am working right now.

If you have a house in the US and can rent it out while you're overseas, you can essentially bank your entire paycheck when you're posted abroad. It's nice.

Does already having a TS/SCI factor into the hiring process at all, or is it all how you do on the tests? Assuming you make it through the Orals, would having the TS/SCI speed up the onboarding process?

Having a clearance already won't give you an advantage with hiring.

Depending on which agency issued your security clearance and when it was issued, you may be able to get to the suitability review panel sooner. But State also might not recognize your other clearance at all and will require a new investigation.

Well, in retrospect it referred more to federal government jobs in general, but I figure that part's probably false too. A bunch of non-federal people told me this over the years I think.

Ah ok. I used to hear this a lot when I was getting out of the military as well. Everyone told me having a clearance would make me more competitive for jobs in the private sector or in other government agencies. It's never made even a little bit of a difference. I think some potential employers will look at it as a sign that you can pass whatever vetting process they will inevitably have to put you through, but I've never heard of it being a deciding factor. For people already in the Foreign Service it can make a big difference for their spouse to obtain a clearance. There is a new program in place that allows clearances to travel with a spouse to ease hiring into new positions. This can make a huge difference if you are doing a number of 2 year posts.

Don't know about DOS but in DOD clearance process you must have stopped using it for at least 7 months or something like that. The official line of the government is that it acknowledges marijuana is legal in certain states but it's still schedule I (illegal) for federal government. Plus you will be routinely piss tested in most gov positions. If you pop they don't care that it's legal in DC or Colorado etc...

With that said as other posters have said, don't lie on the SF86 about it. If you do and they find out then you will completely lose your chance to get cleared.

As others have said, be honest about it. Hopefully you quit before you started applying for this job too. A friend of mine was a casual smoker and quit when she applied and they ultimately rejected her at final suitability. She got the clearance but they judged that she quit smoking just for the job (exactly, she said) and somehow that was a bad thing and they yanked her application. It isn't a deal breaker at all, but YMMV

Wait what my office made me use ALV, I've been on ALV since before Xmas.

Am I gonna get those days back? That would be amazing.

My understanding is there is no leave status during a shutdown. You get the days back and get paid or not depending on if they decide to back pay the furloughed employees.

Until today, I've always been the one having to work and cover for everyone else who ended up getting paid anyway which definitely seemed like the worse end of the deal.

Tyro

Well I'm definitely not furloughed, I'm working this pay period. My bureau guidance for last pay period was business as usual, according to my timekeeper.

That's super interesting, thanks. I guess I'll just wait and see what happens.

Depends on pots of money. You and Tyro are both right. Some are furloughed, some are excepted (sup dudes), and some are business as normal where leave must be taken.

sociablegoldfinch
Feb 18, 2016

Based on 2013 elsewhere, we got all our pay back, and since no leave is allowed on furlough, no leave of any type was charged. Contractors on the other hand, got nothing. They either used PTO or took no pay for the furlough days. There were a couple exceptions, on contracts that were forward funded, but it was only for a month. Since that shutdown lasted 16 days, no issue on that.

Well I finally (after putting in a bunch of AL last pay period and working several shifts this week) got the guidance that despite my office being excepted, my bureau executive office DOES consider me furloughed because I was supposed to be in onward assignment training.

Whoops. Hey that only took what 18 days to figure out?
