Also, a lot of death rites are equally about helping people cope with the loss of their loved one as giving people a framework for their own death. Yea, you don't care, but some sort of ritual and handling your corpse helps because the people that cared about you will still attach those feelings to your body and feel weird if it's just tipped out onto a landfill.
My funeral will be held in a landfill to force my loved ones to come to terms with the meaninglessness of existence.

Gave sister $20k to clear debts. 3 months later she is back demanding $7k more - and went nuts when I asked for the bills.

Sadly, the OP removed the post text.

But this time she just came back and demanded it "because more debts".

I have money but it's not an open spigot. I refused and said I will pay if she gives me copies of the bills so I can pay them directly. And... liftoff.

I don't feel I am in the wrong here - if she has really bills what is the problem? If not, what is going on?

Just replace the "r" in "reddit.com" with a "c".

best one I saw so far

quote:

I worked for a mom and pop computer repair shop in the late 90s. We also had a dial up internet service, back when that was a legitimate thing. The only other option in the area was a shitbag telecom that would literally charge long distance phone call charges for calling someone directly across the street, because, "It's a different district, you understand."

So we were making money hand over fist.

Problem is, the "Mom and Dad" of the organization are also super religious. The interwebs are in their formative years, so Mom and Pop are going to make a statement. They hire up an agency that blacklists any and all porn sites they can find. That's right, an internet provider that says, "I don't care what your beliefs are, I don't care what your desires are, you can't visit porn sites. End all."

So for the next couple of weeks, we got every possible persona you can imagine coming in and telling us to gently caress off, they quit.

Sleaze bags making excuses, to soccer moms saying straight up, "It's because of the porn filter with their kids in tow." and everything in between.

We went from 40k customers to less than 3k within a month. I got laid off because 1 repair technician was no longer affordable.

90s versions topped out at a max weight of 50 pounds if I recall, add that to a battery that would last about 30 minutes and take 4 to 50 hours to charge its even more bwm.

I have toured the factory where they used to make these. It’s a self-storage facility now, but they have an exhibit up front with the old toys.

Edit: we had them, they were legit at the beach and our sandbox.

I think the modern solution is to just take a picture of a snowpile with an Instagram filter providing the hat and scarf and trappings. Reality is what is reported, not what happens.

Edit: Does the kit at least come with arms? Finding well proportioned sticks with the right look is probably the only thing that someone might have trouble with.

My Mom Lost over 10K Trading Options... How to fix this

quote:

I told her that the secret is buying diversified funds and holding onto them, but she saw a coworker trading options and secretly started trading them. I don't fully understand options trading and neither does she. That's what so hurtful about this, is she could go into something so woefully unprepared without consulting me. We sold them all at a huge loss so that we can take advantage of tax selling, and I reinvested what was left in VTI. So, the question is, how can we fix this? I've convinced her to put a substantial amount of money in a 5 year CD with a good rate. She told me that she wouldn't need to access the money these next 5 years and she's turning 60 soon, so I imagine she'll be able to access her IRA within the next year (someone correct me if I'm wrong). But we lost 14k. I'd like to know what's a good benchmark for us to aim to earn to replace this, when factoring future value and things of that nature. I'm still so shocked. She told me she lost some money on investments but I didn't know the full extent until yesterday.

Thanks

Edit: "There's no fixing this" comments are unhelpful. Please stop being so pedantic. Realistically, I'd like to earn the money back while accounting for the future value, assuming an interest rate of 3%
Help! My mom lost a bunch of money gambling! What can I do to fix this? Don't tell me there's no way to fix this completely avoidable loss of money!

Reply comment posted:

I don't really understand your question. You lost 14k then cashed out. You just have to keep making money the old fashioned way. If there were a method to make 14k easily and fairly quickly, you should just do that for your investing.

OP posted:

So, basically here is my thought process. She has a bank account worth approximately $150k. I think she should close that and put all that money into a 5 year CD at 3.5%. That would have a future value of around $178k if I'm not mistaken. We would have earned the $14k back twiceover for money that would be sitting in a bank account anyway.

Of course, she would not be able to access that during these 5 years, but she has around $500k in an IRA. Am I right in thinking that she can access her IRA at age 59 1/2? Or am I mistaken?

She also has a job and can hopefully keep it these next 5 years
It's not terribly subtle how this family doesn't exactly seem to understand how to think about money. They're not doing awful. Losing $14k when you have half a million lying around is certainly not the worst with money. But jeez, man, I feel like they're a generation or two away from creating little Zaurglings who don't understand the time value of money or how it works.

The ATV type power wheels were better because kids wouldn't grow out of it as fast. And LOL at the weight limit, kids would be piling onto those things like a goddamn clown car when a kid in the neighborhood got one. I never thought of them as super expensive if you shop around,at least compared to a comparable gift like a bicycle or decent roller blades or something.

While trading options is usually lol this guy must be ignoring what the market in general is doing. 500k in index funds probably would have lost a similar amount this past year. His reaction of “I lost this pile of money can I shove in this other pile of money to help” is pretty BWM.

Those things are money pits too. Before my kids outgrew it (and I dumped it on the curb with a huge satisfying grin) I replaced the motors several times on each wheel, the battery, the tires, and I think some other part in there. They wear like a mofo and the replacement parts are crazy.

Now what’s really BWM and likely BWL is the community around modding these up to crazy speeds and torque. They’re chaining batteries together and doing all sorts of nutso poo poo.

Sorry you crashed and knocked your head little Tyler, I’m sure the kids won’t make too much fun of your new stutter at school.

You don't waste money on replacement parts, you sell it to those guys participating in the Underground midnight power wheels racing circuit.

Then you just tell your kid that the power wheels toy ran away to live on a farm.
