The NV4500 parts graveyard from the rebuild grows. I finally got around to cleaning the main case casting so I could start filling it with parts and subassemblies. I got the countershaft front bearing race in, then the countershaft, then the countershaft rear bearing (you can't get the countershaft in and out with the rear bearing on... Have to remove it before pulling the countershaft out and install it after the countershaft goes in) and race. Got the end play set on the countershaft. Then put the mainshaft, mainshaft bearings, input shaft, bearings, and input bearing retainer in. Set the endplay on the mainshaft too. At this point I discovered that I'd forgotten to figure out a press for installing the fifth gear on the mainshaft (it presses on, but not very tight) and it was nearly 1am so I went to sleep. quad4x4 used to sell this tool premade but discontinued it, so I'm going to rig some adapters together to make my harbor freight 10 ton hydraulic knockout punch into a tool for this purpose.

So for future reference, the harbor freight #96718 hydraulic knockout punch tool has a 3/4-16UNF female thread on the piston, and pulls on it when the handle is pumped. Use that as you will. It is allegedly a 10 ton cylinder though I assume that being harbor freight, the rules are made up and don't matter and the number is for amusement purposes only. I recommend using it to make all manner of balljoint removal, bearing install, and trans gear install tools.

Here's my idea for pulling Subaru balljoints. And here's the nv4500 5th gear press... The gold Forester just exploded on my way to work so I'm debating between scrapping it, dropping in my good spare engine and continuing to drive it, or dropping in my good spare engine and selling it for 1500 then buying a co-workers 05 Honda Civic hybrid for 1k. My hate for Subarus is pretty high these days. I've fixed the AC in the loving thing 3 or 4 times now and keep finding more holes in it.

I think you've destroyed the requisite number of Subarus. Buy the Honda if you think your road won't eat it when winter comes.

That's the only thing pushing me to keep the Subaru, honestly. BraveUlysses posted:hmm have you considered not buying more terrible subarus Where did I say buy more? That's not even an option on the table. The options are: Sell it as is to a Gambler 500 team that already expressed interest, having bought my last Subaru corpse, buy Honda Slam the spare motor I already have (motor #4 from the red Forester, for those keeping track) in it, sell it for 1k-2k on Craigslist, buy Honda Slam the spare motor I already have in it, continue to drive it into the ground SECRET OPTION #4 that involves not buying anything new but daily driving a Jeep again I'm really leaning toward #3 right now, just because it is the lowest cost option and involves the fewest hours spent sitting in line at the RMV, even though I hate this pile of poo poo.

Buy Honda is no longer an option sadly. Turns out it sold basically as soon as he put the listing up. Motor swap it is. Oh well, at least they made Subaru engines easy to replace Now that I've said that the bellhousing will be seized to the alignment dowels for sure.

And then I think snap-on has a more expensive version.

Yeah, but the sniper1rfa one is double threaded inside and out and is no longer available, and the company 23 one is only 15 bucks less than the knockout punch tool I already bought. And the knockout punch tool can be adapted to any number of tasks like this, for example I'm going to use it on Subaru balljoints, nv4500 fifth gear installs, and probably on Subaru hub flange and wheel bearing installs on-car, each with a few fairly simple adapters.

Subaru engine R&... Not yet replace. This is where the PCV vents to. So yeah my Subaru had projectile diarrhea into its own air filter, and... I think it needs less coolant in its diet. It's got actual green droplets on the dipstick and hanging from the bottom of the driver side head gasket. And most of the coolant I put in last week before driving it onto the wrecker was now gone. I'm not really sure where because there was no mark on the ground and the engine wasn't hydrolocked so I don't think the crankcase is completely full... gently caress you, poo poo engine. Your services are no longer required. I need to buy more hose clamps and maybe a radiator if my spare isn't worth using and then the spare engine can go in tomorrow night.

Still haven't fixed the Forester. I hate working on that shitbox. Meanwhile I have kinda fixed the driver's window on the Comanche (rescued it from the door, replaced the weather strip, it doesn't fall down if you never roll it all the way down) and also fixed the last window on the Roadmaster. All the windows roll up and down properly on it now which is rather novel.

No pictures of the Subaru engine install, naturally. I was too pissed to take any. Especially the part where two bolts for the PS pump bracket pulled the threads out of the block. I tried a longer one in one hole since I know the threads go 3/4" deeper than the bolt and promptly broke it off in there. Vise grips did not get it back out. gently caress. brought my MIG welder home from the hangar. Make weld blob, vise grip, break it off, repeat 9 times. Finally get it spinning. You're mine now you miserable little bitch Haven't touched that project since but it's all easy poo poo now because I can helicoil all the chowdered holes and chase the rest, then bolt it together. Finally finished the NV4500 build for the Honcho Thursday! Gears all together. Here's the special tool adapter I was talking about. 3/4UNF nut booger welded back to back with a 1/2UNF nut, cut the heads off a 3/4 grade 8 bolt and a 1/2 extra long lug stud, both fine thread, turn down the booger welded nuts till they fit in the hydro cylinder bore, assemble and add pipe and tube to taste. Also the harbor freight knockout punch tool I mentioned. Here's how it worked. Really well TBH. I used it a total of 4 times because I put the fifth gear on backwards, had to pull it off and put it back on the right way, then put the harmonic balancer on, realized it was in the way of assembling the fifth gear synchro package on the countershaft, took it off and fixed that, then put it back on again. I think I'm going to use this tool a lot, it makes pressing gears onto the ends of shafts a breeze. It should work well on Subaru wheel bearing and balljoint installs and removals and engine harmonic balancer installs too with the right adapters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYpQn_SnNSs All done! That's all for now. Oh, I replaced the fuel pump on the Comanche, too, because it was almost completely dead, but it was a spare (my new one hadn't arrived yet) from a junkyard and didn't fit quite right in the sender so I'll be installing the brand new one at some point.

Well my parts aren't here yet for the np241d to Chevy nv4500 adaptation so it looks like I'm going to get started by slapping a Chevy np241c on because I'm running out of time. I want this thing running and driving by New year's. Rwd only will have to do until I can build the tcase. Hopefully gonna spend a few evenings working on it this week. No idea if I'll actually get to.

Well This is what I think of you, shithouse AMC 360. Didn't get any wrenches turned on it tonight, but I'm pretty happy just having gotten it into the drat hangar and the doors closed after. It was 4 hours of hard work. All the tires were nearly flat, it was sunk into the formerly swampy grass in front of the hangar door, the work space was full of random junk, the compressor hose was junk so I had to go on a side quest to repair it... Then had to use a ratchet strap as a manual winch and my high lift to jack up individual wheels get them over the lip onto the concrete floor, repeatedly. I'm gonna see if I can pull this off by New Year's. I doubt it'll be polished, but I want to drive it up and down the runway new year's day, drat it. This thing has been on my new year's resolution list for far too many years.

I didn't. I saw it for sale, and Britt thinks they're awesome and I was tempted to buy it because she likes it and they're old Jeeps I haven't owned yet, but I posted a desperate plea for help (as in someone buy it and remove my temptation) and one of my friends bought it. I might get one in a few years when we're in Washington and all my other projects are done (hahahahahahaha... Yeah...) But it made little sense to buy one here and drag it out there without ever touching it when prices are pretty comparable.

I didn't really either I bought the Datsun to trade for it and then it was in much worse shape than I remembered when I got it dropped off. Then got the truck anyways and took a loss on the Datsun. I think I'm getting sick but I'll be damned if I let that get in the way. Engine swap is tomorrow.

Yeah that didn't happen. I was feeling kinda crummy Friday and then went and worked on the truck all day Saturday. Got the whole old drivetrain out. Then Sunday I was disgustingly sick and didn't get out of bed. Dragged myself through work yesterday and debating whether I'm going to do nothing, work on house, or work on Jeep today. Most of the ancillary stuff stripped off and out of the way. What a goddamn mess. Whoops, forgot to take any pics in between again. gently caress YOU YOU'RE THE REASON FOR ALL THIS New garbage tier motor, only fixed what I needed to. The T18 and D20 got voted off the island too because adapter plates are expensive. I might keep the d20 but probably selling the T18. That's all. Hopefully I'll get something done today.

Too many. 3 MJs The J10 Grand Wagoneer Forester Justy 5 ton Roadmaster Plus half-cuts for parts. At least one, possibly two, maybe 3 MJs are going away. The Grand Wagoneer is getting sold, I've got a couple friends interested who I'm sure would finish it. The Forester is going the gently caress away. J10, Justy, and 5 ton are definitely coming with. So is the Roadmaster. Really it's down to which of the MJs I think I should bring. I might bring the white one since it's essentially worthless but will make a great Oregon Gambler 500 truck, and I might bring one of the blue ones since it'd be nice to have a little chore truck already pulled out of maintenance debt when we get there. If the new JT fits my requirements I'll probably buy one instead of bringing MJs over, though. E: I've got my eyes on a sweet M543 out near there that I'm hoping to buy since it would make construction way way easier.

Getting that 5-ton across the entire width of the ConUS sounds like the kind of adventure worth having. Wish the JT wasn't 4-door only. If they did an extended cab with a long bed, I'd probably get over my dislike of FCA enough to buy one.

Liquid Communism posted:Getting that 5-ton across the entire width of the ConUS sounds like the kind of adventure worth having. Yeah it's gonna be an adventure. It'll have the J10 in the bed and an equipment trailer with all my shop tools on it behind. Unless one or both of us get a job lined up out there with a relocation bonus, which would simplify things greatly. I want a 2 door or extended cab with a long bed too but I don't see it happening sadly. I'm visiting a dealership with tape measure in hand the second they hit the showroom floors and deciding if I can live with the bed dimensions. If I can I'm buying one like 6-12 months after release, if I can't I'll drag an MJ with us.

I think he's said in the past that it gets around the 5-7 mpg range. So not nearly $9k in fuel. Not cheap though. Edit: The bigger expense might be tires, as I believe the sorts of tires that thing uses aren't really meant for heavy on-road use.

Iirc, doesn’t it have a max speed of 50-55? That alone would add considerably to trip duration. Ship it.

This is going to be expensive no matter which way he does it. When I looked into getting the Trukk shipped, estimates were in the 5-6K range. I can only imagine that costing even more. So I mean, if he can get some utility out of it by hauling a car, and a trailer full of heavy shop tools, it may be worth it vs. spending the extra for moving trucks. In other news, uh hey kastien, I also have a large truck that can now move under its own power than needs to go to Oregon. Goon road trip?
