I use Pledge Future and follow up with Liquitex Matte Varnish which you can get a great big bottle of at a craft store for pretty cheap. Dullcote is maybe a little flatter, but good enough.

Looking at the prices of these compared to rattles, getting an airbrush setup going would be worth it for varnishing alone :aaa:

It has a lot of dark, purplish and grey tones, so a sandy base would contrast the most, I think.

I'd personally go dark and really neutral in order to keep the focus on the mini, e.g. grey but with maybe a couple of light blue or purple spot features like ice or something. If you want contrast, then something on the orange spectrum would work.

Supposedly the mecha line of varnish is "tougher" because it's meant for models that's are articulated and get moved around a lot.

I spray it unthinned at 30ish psi, it probably sprays fine at lower psi too if you thin it a bit.

I spray it unthinned through my patriot 105 at around 20psi. I also lay it on thick, it gets a little milky looking on the model but once it dries it looks perfect.

How are Valkyries? My brother got me one for Christmas and I figure if they don’t add it as a flier to the GSC list I could also add a small detachment of Scions to bring it.

I've never had much luck with mine. If you move it as a flyer it'll almost never hit anything since all of it's weapons are heavy you're hitting on 5+. If you have it in hover mode you get a +1 to hit, but even then it's not that impressive as a gunship. If your opponent is light on anti tank or you have a lot of hard targets then it'll have a good chance to zip your guys around the board, but at T7, a +3 save any 14 wounds and dedicated anti tank will drop it pretty fast.

I wouldn't use it with scions since they can deepstrike on their own, but but you could easily move around an infantry squad, platoon commander and a psyker or something else around the board where you need it the most. I think flyers should have a rule similar to what dark lances have where they become assault weapons when mounted on a vehicle. Flyers are pretty bad this edition and I think it would help them out quite a bit to actually be able to shoot at something.

edit: it does have hard to hit so it'll be a little harder to take out that I thought.

The Drop Force formation in the Vigilus book gives a strat for a Valkyrie to support overwatch for Scions on a 4+ to hit. It might be worth taking in that.

EDIT: and risk free disembark at the end of movement, which will put a bunch of Scions somewhere important on turn 1. Deep strike can't do that anymore.

Scions in Valkyries are actually extremely cool and good right now:

This synergizes very well with the Scion trait of exploding hits on 6's to hit, because you'll have plasma guns that can't get hot and get an extra shot on 5's and 6's. You can also have them doing this on turn 1 and the valkyries themselves got a decent drop in CA. It's not top table competitive but it's definitely got some legs.

Don't judge me.
Any idea what would make an plastic cement connection go bad almost a year after assembly? I've had a model sitting in the bottom of a cabinet since early winter 2018, primed and washed, but otherwise unpainted. It seemed OK after taking out from storage, but some of the glued sections are oddly sticky and glossy. The paint near those seams is also slightly rubbing off.

Even stranger is that there's an identical model assembled at the same time, that's NOT suffering from the issue. What on earth is wrong with this one? It's just a basic plastic Carnifex, no resin weirdness to blame either.

Let's Compare Canoness Builds!

What I've done here is the same hit/wound/damage calculation, but at the end multiplied it by 2/6 or 3/6 to compare the effects of their chance of succeeding at The Passion and fighting twice.

This is a somewhat artificial scenario, since the average of fighting twice is less useful than the burst of being able to do so when you really need it, but it's just for comparison. (Also, again, the damage number is skewed vs. 1 wound models, same caveat applies, etc.) I am also NOT taking into account any invuln saves, which is a pretty big omission, but man, this takes long enough as is.

I also wanted to compare an eviscerator on the Bloody Rose canoness with the Blade of Admonition.

The results are pretty varied! The blade wins out over the eviscerator in most cases, but not all, and while the average damage of the bloody canoness is higher, the ebon canoness is not bad.

Given detachment mixing being what it is, I think including a small bloody rose detachment for a strong melee character (or two) is a solid tactic.
