Total fuckin' silence.
How true is it that Owen was given the Blue Blazer gimmick again as a punishment for not wanting to do the typically Attitude Era Russo storyline of messing around with a married woman? Like, have any insiders/Meltzer or someone ever properly commented on it?

I don't doubt it at all, I guess I just want to see if it's all as disgusting as I think it is.

Warrior Award because it's like there was a staff meeting of higher-ups at WWE HQ assembled to answer the question "What is the shittiest possible way to do a good deed?"

1) Honor a racist.
2) Use it to whitewash his legacy.
3) Despite the fact that they didn't even LIKE the guy that much.
4) Give somebody complicit in his bullshit a podium every year at their most prestigious event despite nobody even knowing her or giving a poo poo about what she has to say.
5) The let's have Steph go online and use coded business speak to tell everybody they're just doing it for the good press.

Talking point: Were the Mexicools any different from Eddy's "We Lie, We Cheat, We Steal" Gimmick?
Because yeah, racist. That Eddy made it work proves he was a miracle worker and possibly the left hand of God.

At least the Mexicools were ostensibly supposed to be satire, but WWE does satire so poorly it tends to loop back to taking it at face value. They were a pretty dope stable regardless.

Honoring a guy who famously said "queering don't make the world work" with an annual award trotted out for sick kid sympathy so you're not allowed to criticize it is just ugly, ugly humanity in practice.

Another reminder for how bad WWE's idea of irony is, when ECW started they intentionally started pushing people like Kevin Thorne and stupid gimmicks like The Zombie and Nacho Libre because "That's what people expected us to do non-ironically so we did it "ironically"

I think Sci-Fi actually wanted there to be some fantasy/sci fi content, how poorly they did it is another thing.

I think Crime Tyme were worse. They did so many press releases beforehand of how they were trying to satirise media portrayals.....and then they were 2 black street thugs. The closest thing they did to actually been that was the bizarre skit where they pretended they beat up Michael Richards (actor who played Cosmo Kramer) as revenge for his scandal at the time.

How many black wrestlers haven’t been saddled without some sort of stereotype gimmick at one point or another in the WWE? Cedric Alexander is the only one I can think of off hand.

I always grimaced when WWE would sign a black wrestler and immediately saddle him with a more "ethnic" name.

Bad News Allen becomes Bad News Brown
Tony Norris became Ahmed Johnson
Charles Wright at one point was Kama Mustafa
Ron Simmons became Farooq Asad (who was a gladiator for some reason)
Rycklon Ezekiel Stephens becomes Ezekiel Jackson
Ettore Ewen becomes Big E Langston
2 Cold Scorpio becomes Flash Funk

I think Allen is the worst of those.
Because it wasn't a wholesale transformation and it wasn't something WWE did as a matter of course in the 80's.
They didn't change anybody else's name back then.
Just his.
To Brown.

So Vince/WWE hates Warrior and either wholesale ignores him or makes the point to trash him, then (???), then he gets inducted into the HOF, then dies, now he's a hero for us all.

What exactly happened in the (???) part? I've never gotten that. It's not like there was any clamoring for the company to reignite his legacy at the time.

As a thought exercise, there’s Bobby Lashley, Sasha Banks, Koko Ware, Butch Reed, Zeus, Alicia Fox, the Boogeyman, Naomi, Ricochet, Apollo Crews, Titus O’Neill, Maven, Jason Jordan, Keith Lee, David Otunga, MVP, and Velveteen Dream (I don’t think mimicking a specific black person constitutes a stereotype gimmick?)

I used a pretty loose definition of stereotype so stuff like Reverend D-Von and (ugh) Shelton’s mama would count. Booker T was always just sort of a dude I think? But they’ve definitely used his race in obviously uncool ways. I also welcome anyone letting me know about lovely gimmickry of any of the above that I might have forgotten about.

I would include the Rock, Mark Henry, and D-Lo Brown because their characters in and of themselves are fine, but the Nation of Domination stuff is. . .problematic.

Very interested in how they use ACH and Shane Stickland in NXT as they will both be on the roster at the same time. The singles division is already stacked, both can actually dance and African American wrestlers tend to be put together in WWE/North American TV Wrestling.

Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

I'd call wrestlers like Sasha Banks and MVP borderline. If WWE had more credibility they wouldn't be stereotypes and the wrestlers themselves seem to embrace the gimmicks. But with WWE's history of sticking black wrestlers with stereotypical black gimmicks Sasha and MVP fall comfortably into the majority vs like a Bobby Lashley.

I'm not sure I've ever bought into the "satire" excuse for the Mexicools. I'm not exactly sure where the line between "satire" and "minstrel show" is but again, WWE neither has the track record nor deft to find that line.

But again, the Mexicools sadly are an institutional problem of WWE's racism and demeaning of wrestlers and employees. Which makes it feel like it pales next to honoring a piece of poo poo like the Warrior year after year.

MVP’s character is ‘I’m Terrell Owens’ and Sasha’s character is ‘I’m Rihanna’. There is nothing that exploits or demeans the black community that I recall about either.

Ok so devil’s advocate here. The Owen Hart thing was an accident (a preventable one, born out of recklessness and disregard, but I don’t think Vince McMahon willfully killed Owen Hart). Not paying road expenses is one of a zillion labor abuses that has benefited the company’s bottom line for years and years. So if we’re just talking “sleaziest business practices” then for sure it’s road expenses. If we’re talking “shittiest thing WWE ever did” then yeah, Owen, no question.

Labor abuse is a thing that really pisses me off and it’s insane how many things this company has done that I find more offensive than the way they exploit their workers.
Willfully? No. But it was considerably more preventable than most people realize. WWF went to their usual stunt rigger to ask if they could lower Owen, but with some kind of quick release to unhook himself because it took too long to get him out of the harness on live TV. (I believe the pratfall idea was the egg, not he chicken.) The rigger said no, that's incredibly dangerous because it could trigger while he's hanging, but I'll do the normal version for X price. When they don't call him back to confirm, he freaks out that they found someone willing to do it and tells his assistant to call the WWF offer to do it the same way himself for half of what his boss charged. They didn't bite.

Everyone should read the relevant portions of Broken Harts if they haven't.

Also: They came very close to killing THREE people. As alluded to earlier, there was an idea for Max Mini/Tzuki to be strapped to Owen in a Blue Blazer outfit, but Owen nixed it as soon as he was pitched the idea. Then, when Owen fell, he actually touched Jim Korderas on the way down, if just barely.

Refs are talent. They don't get their expenses covered just for refereeing. Contractually, they're the same as wrestlers, right down to being under the Talent Wellness Program. But...

Ring crew, while still independent contractors, do get their road expenses covered. So if you're a referee on the ring crew, you get your road expenses covered.

Production crew I believe get all of their road expenses covered.

Road agents/wrestling side producers are employees and thus get not only their road expenses reimbursed, but also full benefits packages.

yea if you just saw MVP in his gimmick on another promotion most people would think 'oh yea that's a fun persona to work with', it's just WWE's pool for black wrestlers being 'diva, athlete, literal savage jungle monster, diva athlete, scary black man' has led to even very normal 'yea I'm just kinda a prissy and arrogant guy who's athletic and sometimes I get big wins to brag about and sometimes I get smacked down after being too smug and lovely' gimmicks to feel bad just by association. Which is a shame because, yea, according to most things I saw MVP was just fine with his character and had fun with it so it kinda blows that it's hard not to think 'yea but did he get that persona because the writers literally didn't know how to write a black guy other than that because this is like the fourth one of these gimmicks I've seen'
