The best argument you could make for wishy-washy language is that it interferes with court proceedings against the accused, but there won't be any because he's dead.

Also basic accuracy. Legally speaking, you're not a criminal until you've been convicted. You could argue that that rule is outdated and should bee changed, but if you die in the act of stabbing then you'll never actually be proved to be a stabber in the eyes of the law (because they don't try dead people).

Not being classified as a criminal until convicted is a pretty fundamental part of law and should never, ever be changed.

I dunno, I just feel like there's a difference between something being witnessed and established as having happened and proving something happened beyond all reasonable doubt in a court. If the latter needs to happen or is in the process of happening, it's an accusation. Otherwise you may as well claim it happened, or even 'probably' happened. As someone else pointed out though, news outlets probably don't have time to make that call.

Newspapers aren't courts, the first amendment protects commentary on events, they use "allegedly" to minimize legal exposure. But also, media coverage can make jury selection harder when the defense excludes everyone who saw or heard about the headline "YouTube GymBro Stabs The poo poo Out Of Innocent Lady, Holy gently caress."

Yeah, news stories always use "allegedly" when discussing people accused of crimes, even when they were caught red-handed or the evidence is overwhelming. You didn't commit a crime until you've been convicted of it.

I'm no lawyer but I think there's even legal standing for that; like if he got acquitted somehow he could sue them for slander or something as they said he committed a crime that he was acquitted of. Even if the police catch him in the act and immediately arrest him he's technically still innocent until he is convicted or pleads guilty.

It would be a horrible idea to change that. I mean if the police literally caught him in the act and had to taze him to make him stop it's probably an open and shut case but if the trial hasn't even started yet then he's still presumed innocent.

Because they're basically well-meaning and didn't look into him. And there's a lot of Canadian Muslims who are in the middle class and are basically white protestants in their outlook. They haven't necessarily had the clean break with conservatism like what happened in the US post 9/11. So he sometimes targets them, before falling back onto anti-muslims dogwhistling.
