There were only 12 combat squads at Manus. I guess it really was the tanks holding you back this whole time.

Congrats! You've finally taken Manus! Put an airbase there and use it to help with separate fighter sweeps? Then put a brigade tehre as garrison, some engineers to build up the forts, and start up some harrassment raids!

What ships sunk?

We've not seen a thunderstorm in a while. I do wonder where all my planes are.

This is very strange.

That's a lot of Liberators....

Good sub.

The lack of fighters seems to be down to Rabaul being out of supplies. I'm having general supply issues now, not due to lack of transportation, mainly due to the fact that Industry can't produce the stuff as quickly as I'm using it!
There are convoys on the way, but it may be a lean few days. I've ordered an expansion of course, but its slow and surprisingly limited in scope. Planes you can order masses off, but ramen for the front, apparently we have no real capacity for expansion.

I'm an alien.

Rabaul is in infinitely better shape in terms of supply than it was at this time in real life, wherein the garrison had to resort to fishing, farming, and cannibalism to feed itself.

Apparently we're back to sniping attacks. There are two dozen attacks like this, this is the only one to hit.

Not one, but two dud torpedoes bounce off the side of the Ise.

Down you go!

We got lucky today!

Probably a supplies issue, if Rabaul is really empty it will mess with your points but a resupply will get them back. CV Bunker Hill ain't coming back (the US will just make 10 more to replace it)

Happy holidays, friends. I have driven 14 hours to bring you a week's worth of reports I didn't want to file from my partner's mother's house.

22 December 1944

USS Tilefish torpedoes the torpedo boat Chidori (lead ship of the class that brought attention to the topheaviness of Japanese designs when one capsized during an exercise) west of Yokosuka.

23 December 1944

Norwegian(!) MTBs sink the German minesweeper M-489 off Mosterhavn.

24 December 1944

Destroyer USS Case sinks the fast transport T-8 near Chichi Jima. Minesweeper HMCS Clayoquot takes a homing torpedo from U-806 off Halifax.

25 December 1944

Frigate HMS Dakins suffers heavy flooding after striking a mine off Ostend but survives. Christmas miracle at this point.

26 December 1944

An ineffectual raid on the Mindoro beachhead leaves the destroyer Kiyoshimo sunk by a combination of US aircraft and MTBs. Two British frigates, Capel and Affleck, suffer homing torpedo hits from U-486 off Cap de la Hague. The former sinks following a magazine explosion, but the latter is able to limp to Cherbourg despite 60ft of her stern being wrecked. The U-boat escaped.

27 December 1944

US destroyers sink another fast transport, T-7, in the Bonins.

It seems to me that WitP involves many more ships being sent to the deep compared to OTL.

Is it because in Grey's timeline battleship/cruiser knife fights are the prevailing doctrine?

i guess one would have to keep the full combat logs and run some code on 'em to count it up, but it'd be interesting to see how many pixelmen died at sea total, across the whole war, in one of these games. i bet even in a PBEM game it's way higher than historical, but i don't know the historical number either. i'm ignorant!

The Superforts get a kill today.

We still get our kill though!

There is a major fight over Rabaul today.

Their after the carriers. We make them pay.

Planes are just dropping from the sky today.

They are going all out.

But then again, so are we.

A brutal day in the air, but they didn't get any hits that I saw. We come out ahead in planes, and our points bounce back up.

So the points was totally a supply thing, and BOY HOWDY is Grey glad the supply situation was sorted out before the wave of Liberators.

Can carrier groups send out sorties while docked? Logically I doubt it because when carrier planes take off the carrier is heading into the wind to help the planes, and there's also the traffic problem of maybe the deck launch area is pointing directly at another carrier's superstructure.

But this is WitP so that part of the game engine is either a big old mystery or it's somewhere in the manual saying "When CVs are docked at a port they can/cannot sorties planes." And then you have to trust the manual.

If you have an active carrier task force, it will sortie at half strength in any coastal hexes, including ports. If they're disbanded into port, no planes launch.

Its also because we aren't seeing the historical losses of civilian ships in those daily ships kill updates (so any ship that in this game would be classified as xAK, xAKL, xAP and possibly also TK). We only get the military ships and the civilian ships pressed into direct military roles (troop transport for so and so invasion fleet, ersatz Oiler for the fleet, minesweeping fishing trawlers, stuff like that)

Congrats on Manus Grey ! The game does like you :-)

With regard to the political points and the crashing when disbanding air groups , another way is to have the AI solve it..

Make sure some harm is done to them ;-) Replace the pilots wih some crappy rookie pilots and fly them to a place which is about to be overrun or where they will be bombed by the AI
you can help them by ordering a groundattack at 100 ft and attack the allies where they have a strong airbase with lots of cap.

Wouldn't that get all the planes destroyed but still leave the unit technically existing on paper? So it'll just suck replacements up and keep existing/draining political points on top of that.

Yeah, I suspect this is the bulk of it. I only report surface warship losses, for the most part. Every once in a while a non-warship will creep in because it's interesting. Even all those minesweepers are generally purpose-built military ships. My book has, I think, 419 warship losses reported for the whole of 1944. It would probably be fairly easy to generate some yearly data from Jobbo's tracking sheet and I could separate out sinkings from our theater for comparison purposes.

30 December 1944

Japanese escort No. 20 sunk by aircraft near Luzon and destroyer Kuretake torpedoed southeast of Formosa by USS Razorback.

Do the landing craft count as surface warships? Because Grey sunk very many of them around Rabaul.

Oh, and the fact that in Grey's timeline the Allies are pushing towards Rabaul instead of island hopping to Iwo Jima could be a factor in the greater amount of sunk ships.

Happy New Year!

I'm still bombing out here.

They switch their attacks to Manus. It has less planes.

We Murder their search planes today (Bottom right) then we lose a load of planes in a ill thought out attack. Time to put these guys back on training for a bit!

Sigh. I bet their trying to blow up a PT boat or something.

WHERE ARE YOUR BLOODY ESCORTS?

You forget to put planes on training one time, and they all go on a suicide mission. My base points recover as a supply convoy reach Rabaul. A 424 point jump from that!

The last warship sunk this year is, well, pretty representative: the German minesweeper M-445 sinks at Hamburg as a result of a British air raid.
