I was discussing with my South African coworker over lunch about American culture and healthcare and she brought up that South Africa has a general government fund paid through petrol taxes that pays out for people's medical expenses if they get into a car accident or hit by a car.

She was astounded when I laughed and told her that would be considered extremist leftist socialism in America and an impossible unfathomable pipe dream there.

Lol we're hopeless.

E: she's also a fairly devout Christian and was pretty horrified at how prosperity gospel and megachurches are normal in conservative parts of America.

Yeah NZ does that for basically any accident you suffer in NZ. It's paid by a ~1.5% levy on businesses based on how dangerous the business is (and road levies on things like motorbikes) and has a huge investment portfolio to keep it fiscally sound. Works pretty well.

Oh, she was also pretty shocked at how we drug/alcohol test people to be eligible for workman's compensation instead of guaranteed regardless of circumstances and how incredibly hostile we are towards the average employee/person in America with things like at-will employment, weak or non-existent unions, being prohibited from discussing union activism at places like Wal-Mart or Target, no guaranteed paternity or maternity (!!!) leave, healthcare tied to employment, etc.
