Warzone is definitely still a product of it's time, specifically that it was made before The Raid or John Wick and so it didn't get the benefit of being influenced by how those movies were shot. The Raid changed the game about 3 years later.

Tons of action scenes are still edited like that, either in an attempt (however badly) to make the action feel more kinetic and frenzied, or just because the choreography sucks and needs covering.

Under Siege was Under Whelming.

I did like how bookending the movie with fairly restrained daytime scenes makes the whole plot feel like a weird dream.

Merci, chaton!
I noticed that the Netflix version restores some of the violence that had been cut from the UK DVD release (like Bogosian having his fingers chopped off), so if you're a Brit who wants to experience the majesty that is Under Siege 2 as it was meant to be seen, now's your chance!

Night Comes for Us is nigh horror, but if it weren't for them going all the way in with that it would be a dull movie, cause it's got nothing else going for it. The grenade on the vest part is what sold me on the movie.

Oh yea, no question. The directors previous movie, Headshot, is like that too, just completely relentless.

It also ends with the most awkward 'kiss the girl' scene in any movie. Like, even with the cameras on her, the girl can't pretend to like Seagal.

It used to just be funny, now it's creepy as gently caress.

Under Siege is the one major Seagal movie I can think of where there's at least a pretence that the big bad might have some chance of beating Seagal in a fight.

Granted, Tommy Lee Jones gets completely and utterly wrecked but at least he gets to do that cool knife-flicking move, which is more than William Forsythe got in Out for Justice.

My brother and I were talking about memorable explosions where it's just a single person blowing up, with deacon frost taking the top spot more than likely because of the quip following it. Smith imploding at the end of the Matrix was also mentioned. True Lies was decent, but it didn't really mesh with the "singular person exploding" we were going for, because the villain was fired into a group of people before exploding. There are probably countless examples of grenade pins being pulled as two people separate, with one person left realizing at the last moment what's up. But they don't really leave a lasting impression. Does anyone have any good examples?

I love the part where Eric Bogosian like " Does this disk just have porn on it....or launch codes?" and then brandishes the disk ~menacingly~ and says something along the lines of "That's the thing with portable media...you never REALLY know what's on it until you put the disk in the drive" like this fact was an atomic bomb level revelation about the dangers of media storage. :laffo:

Under Siege 2 is extremely fun and good, on top of all the great stuff in it, they got Basil Poledouris to do the soundtrack. Nothing against Under Siege 1's score but hot drat it owns. I appreciate how it regularly the movie takes the piss out of the military industrial complex and even the type of movie it is too.

There's a good line somewhere in Under Siege 2, something like "Why did you hire a madman to create this weapon?" "Because sane people don't make weapons like this"

I think we should call the Avengers.

In addition to the ones FancyMike mentioned, Master of the Flying Guillotine and Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain are essential classics as well.

If you want something newer, there's always Chrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the two wuxia films Zhang Yimou directed: Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

A Touch of Zen is probably the most essential of all wuxia films I've seen. It's very long, but so worth the time. I don't think I've seen a single wuxia film that doesn't have some significant amount of A Touch of Zen's DNA in it.

The entire third act of A Touch of Zen is perfect and some of the best stuff ever put on film.

King Hu is really just one of the under-appreciated all time greats. I haven't seen all of his just yet, but past the big three his movies are still fantastic. If you like the spiritual direction A Touch of Zen goes then Raining in the Mountain is a ton of fun and Legend of the Mountain is a straight up masterpiece with some incredibly stunning photography. The Fate of Lee Khan is basically Dragon Inn again, but in a good way, it's so great.

It is, but I really love the first act as well. Just spending time in that extremely detailed village set. Apparently King Hu managed to convince them to build the whole thing from the ground up, I wonder if the set still exists and if tourists can visit it.

Headshot was similar, it was a pretty standard "badass with amnesia" story ala Jason Bourne and it never really went anywhere unexpected. I think Night Comes For Us is a nice improvement though because Headshot had some weird effects going on in some scenes and wasn't always shot in a way that made me feel like I was properly following the action. I thought the direction in Night Comes For Us was much better.

It's not as relentless, but yea what's there is just as grisly. The thing that seems to turn a lot of people off is about a third of the way into the movie, there's a scene where a bus full of random innocent people is just raked with machine gun fire and you see it all in pretty gruesome detail, including the shooter entering the bus and finishing off injured survivors.
