It also gives schools a (larger) financial incentive to recruit white men as those will have the best "return on investment". Theoretically it could give an impetus to fight pay discrimination an unequal outcomes, but we all know exactly what gets chosen when the choice is between taking advantage of broken things to definitely make more money and fighting to fix things to maybe make more money.

It's a horseshit system that only looks good if you compare it to nothing at all. My dad got paid to go to university. I took out a loan that took until the age of 35 to pay back. Students starting now will likely never get out of debt. Making students pay for university just ensures that only the rich will be properly educated, and perpetuates a cycle of inequality.

Like seriously why are we even debating anything coming out of silicon valley as a real solution to a social problem?

Bigots want a society where groups of people are not allowed to be citizens or even persons based entirely on things they cannot control. These things literally hurt no one and have proven, zero negative effect on society as a whole, are basically nothing more than surface differences. It's actually proving beneficial! Who'd have thought? Anyway, granting bigots rights, which gives them access to care and protection through society IS tolerance. Letting them try to push what is just dubunked eugenics and psuedo-sciences about sex, attraction, gender, etc isn't intolerant. They're dumb as hell arguments. Argument that we have long since should have moved past already, and most Americans seem eager to. They're certainly allowed to believe whatever we want, we just don't need to even pretend to entertain the idea that it has a place in public discourse. Trying to work yourself into "Well, isn't being intolerant of the intolerance wrong?" is really poor reasoning. Americans (especially white Americans) are so uncritical of it, because they wanted to remain blind on all the bigoted -isms, is part of why we're seeing a resurgence of other things we have looong since decided were dumb as gently caress and have moved past, like not vaccinating your children, the earth being flat, I could go on whatever

It's just something we've moved past as a society. e: Intolerant also has the connotation that one is of small-mind, or refusing to accept things (like progress, in this instance). So, when people call you "intolerant" of views like racism, sexism, etc, it's a purposeful misuse of the word. thin blue whine fucked around with this message at 14:47 on Jan 8, 2019 |

TV is good compared with streaming sometimes precisely because it doesn't allow you to be choosy. While that's generally worse for things you want to actively be watching, it's pretty good for having on in the background while you cook dinner or pack your lunch or whatever because it's that much easier to ignore. I love Netflix and Prime Video for finding something I want to actively engage with, but cable is still my gold standard for having poo poo on in the background as I do other things and/or go to sleep.

When someone uses the "tolerating intolerance" argument it strikes me as just a covert way of saying "both sides! everyone's viewpoint has literal academic merit and is valid". It doesn't make sense. Being intolerant is literally another way of saying "bigoted" and "illiberal" so when someone claims you will magically become the intolerant one for believing we are a progressive society is just like What?

when most people talk about "tolerance" they mean accepting people or cultures unlike yours. they don't mean accepting people holding or supporting vile and counterfactual positions.

Who'd have thought? The paradox of tolerance can be rendered as a mathematical equation, to simplify it for the "logic" and "reason" heads that seem to afflict the alt-right. If strength of tolerance is a positive number and tge strength of intolerance as a negative number, then if you tolerate (add) them together, you weaken "tolerance", neutralize it's effect, or produce a negative sum. But, if you subtract intolerance, you always get a positive outcome.
