Borden’s sentence being so heavily suspended is almost certainly due to his age and it being a first offense. in general terms we should be in favor of this type of thing since we don’t exactly want to toss children into the wood chipper of the American penal system. however it sounds like this kid’s dad is the real fash and poisoned his son’s brain. also if Borden is a true believer idealogue it’s already too late for him to become a real person. in that case the suspension is not appropriate. but the “””good””” news is he’s almost certain to reoffend during his probation and will immediately go back to serve big boy time plus whatever his new sentence is.

also reading that article, holy hell, they really went all out with the sentence. the guidelines top out at like 4 years, he got ~20~. if you count only the non-suspended part then it’s right smack in the middle of the guidelines. the defense was asking for like 1-2. the judge is imo being smart here. he knows how likely it is Borden reoffends now that he’s being sucked into the Nazi lifestyle. he wants to give him a chance to not become a lifer dirtbag, hence the huge suspension, so when Borden gets out he’ll have ten years hanging over his head as an incentive to stay good. if he can somehow find a new track for his life then it’ll have been a good decision to spare him a decade in prison. if he can’t then the sentence kicks in and it doesn’t matter.

Yeah, I thought the judge did a good job with the sentence. He structured it in such a way that it won't be appealed, since the defendant came out on the lower end of actual jail time, but if he does anything wrong for the next two decades, he gets the book thrown at him. Also I dunno if it was Molly or someone else, but I saw someone point out that the way the sentence is structured, it isn't just loving up on release, he also has to keep clean during his jail time or else the full sentence kicks in.
