I particularly enjoy the Scylla and Charybdis of "AOC needs to get every last fact and figure perfectly right" / "AOC quit looking at your notes!". There is literally no way for a woman to win.

This is very stupid and needlessly inflamatory.

The reason there were people saying "Huh, this is one of the first times I've heard her and she's kind of underwhelming" is because there were a LOT of people making a huge deal about her speaking and saying she should give the direct address and how she should be given a spot at the DNC that will blow everyone away and its too bad she has to wait to run for President and GO AOC! So expectations were built up.

And that's not remotely her fault. Its the personality cult following and it does a disservice to a very good political upstart. Just like accusing people of being misogynists if they have mild criticisms of her speaking skills is unnecessary and does a disservice.

Also you know very well that the people attacking her mistakes in RWM are not the same people posting in this thread.

loving this

What other politican is held to this much scrutiny at all times, besides Omar, AOC, Tlaib, Pressly, etc.

Criticizing every loving move they make while not holding male politicans to that standard is actually loving signal boosting the right's skewed view of the world.

I'm not saying don't criticize, but loving pick one thing you want to them to do differently.

Listen, I've said before I'm not a fan of AOC. She's super green and she's said some stupid stuff.

But far out, supporters in this thread need to make a choice.

She's either green, needs time to prepare and is trying her best.

Or, she's the next coming of Christ and ready to run for president when the time comes.

You can't have both.

I'm honestly starting to think that Trump only asked the Networks for this speech because he wanted them to deny him and claiming he was being censored by the evil mainstream media was his actual plan to rally fresh support. I think he had no plan for them bending over for him.

It's almost like people like what she says, and not how she says it. It is astounding to me that the people who like to toss around words like "cult of personality" can't seem to grasp why the people who really like Bernie also really like AOC and Tlaib and Corbyn. It's almost like its not about personality at all, and the whole "cult of personality" accusation is just projection from people who don't understand politics as being about the exercise of power and think just in terms of charisma.

I think its probably more that Trump acts spontaneously and without foresight, and then changes his mind. So he probably got worked up about the negative coverage, someone suggested an Oval Office address, he got excited that he could win everyone over, then he waffled a bunch, probably went back and forth on the "national emergency" thing a bunch, and ended up with a wet fart he didn't want to do.

I don’t think the admin ever really considered what they were asking. Asking for national airtime is a BIG DEAL. Trump going out there and just letting out a loud 8 minute fart was pointless.

I don't think people are honestly putting to much expectation in her. We all just have a lot of hope for a better future. I don't remember who posted it earlier today, but they said AOC represents Millenials demanding to be heard or something like that.

There is a ton of exuberance around the new congress, and she is definitely a focal point, but I think most of us just want to feel a spark of fighting spirit that she engenders.

There are definitely a handful of people in this thread who feel the need to tut tut her because "she looks at her notes too much" or "she seems too eager, forced and earnest". Aren't forced and earnest contradictory?

There's enthusiasm around an elected socialist going on prime time TV and landing body blows on the GOP and some people's first reaction is to throw cold water on it and say "well an A is ok I guess but it's certainly no A+".

Has there ever been a freshman lawmaker as young and as visible as AOC? I can't think of any. In fact I can't think of any freshman representative that I've paid attention to besides her. So I wouldn't take the (fair, IMO) criticism that she's unpolished as sexist. She just happens to be new and in the spotlight.

I think its pretty clear people like what she says, and I think its pretty clear that nearly everyone criticizing her (or her boosters) also like what she says (including me, for the record).

But I'll again express my opinion that the reason some people expressed that they were underwhelmed hearing AOC speak tonight is because other people were pushing HARD the last couple of days how she should be doing the official address and would blow people away. So understandably some people went in expecting a more polished speaker. Which isn't very fair because she's a very young and inexperience politician and speaker still learning but showing good potential.

But yes, the ideas are more important than their delivery. But we were specifically talking about her delivery. I didn't see a single criticism of her ideology.
